Cancer care in Low and Middle Income Countries (LIMC) is challenging for many reasons. We discuss the biggest challenges and how these can this be tackled with dr. Elena Ladas and dr. Scott Howard.
Elena Ladas is the principal investigator on a number of multi-institutional studies that evaluate the role of nutrition and integrative therapies, as components of supportive care, during and after treatment for childhood cancer and is serving as Chair of the nutrition committee of Children’s Oncology Group (COG). Finally, Dr. Ladas is the founder and director of the International Initiative for Pediatrics and Nutrition (IIPAN) at CUIMC, which aims to enhance nutritional capacity and high-quality research among pediatric cancer units in low- and middle-income countries. IIPAN’s programs are established in Central and South America, Asia, and Africa. This initiative is active in 27 hospitals located in 18 countries and supports nutritional care for nearly 9,000 newly diagnosed children each year.
Scott Howard: After training in internal medicine, pediatrics, and epidemiology at the University of Tennessee and completing a hematology/oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Scott worked for over 14 years as a faculty member treating children cancer and conducting research in oncology supportive care, international oncology, and healthcare informatics. In 2014, he founded Resonance, an informatics, consulting, and global health company with a mission to improve care and outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Its software is currently deployed in several countries and serves as a hospital database, business intelligence tool, and clinical trials management system.

Scott has authored or co-authored 190 scientific papers and 15 book chapters and conducts translational and clinical research with local and international collaborators. He serves as the board member SIOP chairs the Board for World Child Cancer USA (www.WorldChildCancer.us), a charity dedicated to improving cancer care in low- and middle-income countries.
