We can tweak these ratios to improve our communication style. The four clusters are:•\tInitiate: -\tstructuring conversations – organising the flow of direction in the meeting-\tPropose – putting forward new concepts or suggestions. -\tBuild – extending a proposal which has been made by another. •\tReactions within conversations:-\tSupport – a declaration of support or agreement. -\tDisagree – direct difference of opinion. -\tBlock – e.g. no or that wouldn’t work. -\tDefend / Attack – attacking another person to defend one’s own position. -\tOpen – open to loss of status e.g. admission of mistake or inadequacies. •\tClarifying content: -\tTest understanding – checking they have understood-\tSummarise – summarising actions-\tSeek information – e.g. what do you think we should do now? -\tGive information – giving views or experiences. •\tControlling the conversation:-\tShutting others out – talking over or finishing peoples sentences-\tBringing in – e.g. what do you think XX?We always encourage listeners to undertake practical actions after listening to the episode.
