A celestial maiden appeared and said: ‘You smell the flower’s fragrance without paying anything — this is theft’. Meanwhile, another man came and ruthlessly plucked many lotuses. Yet the maiden said nothing to him. Curious, the Buddha asked why. She replied: ‘Worldly people, overcome by greed and desire, cannot distinguish between right and wrong; hence the burden of protecting dharma does not fall heavily upon them. But those devoted to righteousness — even a small deviation can lead to great sin.
