That's the essence of all that's taught in the law and the prophets.\"\nIt's so famous it's known even outside Christian circles. But do we understand what Jesus really meant?\nWHERE IT'S ROOTED:\nThe Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) contains nine commands about how to treat others:\nWork for peace (5:9)\nLet your good deeds shine (5:16)\nBe reconciled to those who have something against you (5:24)\nDon't resist an evil person (5:29)\nLove your enemies (5:44)\nGive to those in need (6:2)\nForgive those who sin against you (6:12)\nDon't judge others (7:1)\nTreat others like you want to be treated (7:12)\nWHAT IT DOESN'T SAY:\nThe Golden Rule does NOT say:\n\"Do to your friends whatever you'd like them to do to you\"\n\"Do to others what you would like them to do to you so that they'll be nice to you later\"\nThere is no promise of reciprocity. Jesus doesn't say \"if you treat them well, they'll treat you well.\" He says treat them well regardless.\nTHE SOURCE:\nGod started the blessing first. In the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 12), God says:\n\"I will bless you\"\n\"You will be a blessing to others\"\nThe movement continues:\nGod blessed Abraham → Abraham blessed the nations\nGod blessed Jacob → Jacob blessed Laban\nGod blessed us through Christ → We bless others\nIn Ezekiel, there's a beautiful pattern:\nGod reveals Himself to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 6-7)\nEzekiel reveals God to Israel (7:12-20)\nIsrael reveals God to the nations (7:25-26)\nTHE PRINCIPLE:\nEverything flows from God's blessing. We receive blessing, then we pass it on.\nTHE ESSENCE OF CHRISTIANITY:\nThe essence of sin: Self-centeredness\nThe essence of Christianity: Others-centeredness\nJesus says: \"Love each other as I have loved you\" (John 14:34).\nPaul says: \"Don't look to your own interests. Look to the interests of...","thumbnail_url":"https://img.transistorcdn.com/QeSOhOM9pdl7ie6YwFiWKrFHSz-rrRbE1NzVv7jCKNA/rs:fill:0:0:1/w:400/h:400/q:60/mb:500000/aHR0cHM6Ly9pbWct/dXBsb2FkLXByb2R1/Y3Rpb24udHJhbnNp/c3Rvci5mbS9zaG93/LzIwMDk2LzE2MTc4/MDY0ODctYXJ0d29y/ay5qcGc.webp","thumbnail_width":300,"thumbnail_height":300}
