{"type":"rich","version":"1.0","provider_name":"Transistor","provider_url":"https://transistor.fm","author_name":"Podcast Shorts from the Disability Labs Podcast Network","title":"TWGPC 16: It's time to create collaborative classrooms","html":"","width":"100%","height":180,"duration":427,"description":"I was praying about you at 4:50 am. \n Here is what I was thinking...\n I have this vision. \nI have this vision where OTs and teachers work together nationwide. \nScores for reading, writing, and mathematics have improved significantly. \nHow can we execute this vision?\nCreating environments in our schools where OTs and teachers are in the classroom together, not pulled out and working in separate rooms.\nSo what do I mean?\nI envision the OT working with the teacher in the classroom showing the kids how to hold the pencil and sit in their seats. \nWhat grace is there to sit in alternative ways that are acceptable in the classroom to get the work done?\nI envision the OT teaching letter formation, teaching what the lines are all about on the page. \nI envision the teacher taking over and explaining how letter formation will help kids with overall writing skills. \nBut we really need to have the team working together, not separately. working separately is not improving these classrooms. \nPullout sessions are only effective for the kids who have major issues. \nKids who are struggling need explicit, systematic, cumulative, and multi-sensory interventions to create their writing skills. \nThose are the ones that are that I'm targeting. \nThose are the kids that I'm looking for. \nThose are the environments that we can create. \nWe can reduce cases for OTs because we've created this environment where the kids know that we're working together because we are better together. \nWe are better as a team rather than in isolation. \nIf we are going to have classrooms where the teachers, the therapist, and the kids all want to be there.\nOh wow, imagine that classroom where everyone is excited to come and be there every day.
