Show Notes

Episode 72. Thursday, August 20, 2026. Pew Research finally put a number on the machine-written web: roughly 35% of pages published since ChatGPT's launch show signs of AI authorship — concentrated almost entirely on the commercial internet, the exact real estate demand-gen teams compete for. Jack King digs into why the study's own caveat matters more than its headline: detectors score probability, not proof, and disclosure law is now landing on top of a detection layer that can't carry the weight. Also today: Ramp's spend data showing enterprise AI loyalty tracks model release cycles almost one-for-one, Ramp launching its own model router hours later, Google handing publishers an embeddable Preferred Sources button, Meta putting an agent inside your ad account, and ChatGPT learning to send texts on your behalf.

Today's stories:

  • Pew: about a third of the new web shows signs of AI authorship — 490,000 English-language pages from 49 Common Crawl snapshots, scored with an open-weight Pangram model. ~10% of the July 2026 crawl overall; 35% of pages published post-ChatGPT. .com ran roughly 10x the rate of .edu and .gov. Pew notes detectors can misclassify. Pew Research · TechCrunch
  • Ramp's spend index: OpenAI is closing on Anthropic — across 70,000+ US businesses, Anthropic went 41% → ~44% of business AI spend from May to July while OpenAI went 39% → ~40%, but OpenAI is growing faster this quarter. Nearly 56% of companies now pay for AI, up from 50% in March. TechCrunch
  • Ramp launches Router — one API endpoint over OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Moonshot, MiniMax, Nvidia, xAI and Z.ai, routing each request to the cheapest model that clears your performance bar. Ramp claims ~40% average inference savings; free through end of 2026. Follows Stripe's $7B+ OpenRouter deal and Runway's July router. TechCrunch · Ramp
  • Google gives publishers an embeddable Preferred Sources button — readers can now mark a publisher as preferred from the publisher's own site, boosting it across Search, Discover and Google News. Google says 345,000+ sources have been selected and users are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source. TechCrunch
  • Meta's new Mac app plugs an agent into your ad account — system-wide dictation and on-screen Q&A, plus business connections to Instagram, Facebook, Meta ad campaigns and Google Workspace, with campaign analysis, competitive intelligence and deck generation. TechCrunch
  • ChatGPT can now text people for you — a new Apple Messages plug-in that drafts, edits, deletes and sends on your behalf. OpenAI explicitly warns against granting persistent send approval, because it removes your last chance to review a message. TechCrunch
