Mike Walker (00:01) I'm Mike Walker. David Patrick (00:02) I'm David Patrick. ⁓ Dad's on books, two minutes later. But we are dads on books. We're addicted to books, we sit on books, and we even talk about books. Mike Walker (00:18) Another episode of GAS ON BOOKS Stella Walker (00:21) Welcome back to my podcast, Dads with Books. I run this place now. This is the introduction for every episode and that's what's going on, David Patrick (00:34) Do depositions matter? Stella Walker (00:35) And that's what your intro is now forever and ever and you can never change it because that's illegal now. Mike Walker (00:40) Whoa. don't know about the illegal stuff. sorry. Go on about prepositions, please. David Patrick (00:41) Prepos- Prepositions matter. It's dads on books, not dads with books. We are dads with books and dads next to books, but it's dads on books. Thank you. Stella Walker (00:50) my god. Mike Walker (00:54) And we are usually with books, but you are correct. Yes. It is dads on books. Welcome to the show. Stella Walker (01:03) Literally they hate me. Literally they hate me. heard it here first. Canceling them on Twitter. I'm canceling them on Instagram and Tumblr and I'm canceling you on Spotify ⁓ and you're canceled now. Mike Walker (01:05) We don't hate you. David Patrick (01:09) You said it only and- So if I'm canceled, that means now it's my time to listen. So later I might be part of the conversation again. Mike Walker (01:32) Possibly. Stella Walker (01:33) clearly. Mike Walker (01:35) Okay, we should actually start for real. Real Z's. Okay. Welcome to another episode ⁓ of... Whoa, what was that? Wasn't that bad voice? Who are you? ⁓ Stella Walker (01:37) Okay, whatever. David Patrick (01:40) Hahaha Dads! Wait a second. Stella Walker (01:54) Wait guys who is that? Who is that? As one of the dads who is that? Who is she? What is going on here guys? David Patrick (02:06) Remember, I'm the one who said, is you? I'm the grammar guy, okay? So I said, who is you? Well, tell us who you is. Stella Walker (02:12) my god. Mike Walker (02:17) I love it when a plan comes together. Well tell us who you are or would you like me to introduce you? David Patrick (02:20) Hmph. Stella Walker (02:26) I can introduce myself, thanks, I'm 17. Mike Walker (02:28) going on eighteen and thirty six David Patrick (02:31) You Mike Walker (02:37) Who's your daddy? David Patrick (02:38) ⁓ my god! Stella Walker (02:40) Get him out of Mike Walker (02:41) I am... I'm your da- That's what I hear. Stella Walker (02:43) Thank you are the father. David Patrick (02:46) So I'm gonna go out on a limb here Stella does that make you Mike's daughter? Stella Walker (02:52) No, actually, I'm his... second... niece? Mike Walker (02:58) third room. ⁓ Stella Walker (03:00) Yes, it does. Mike Walker (03:03) You David Patrick (03:05) Anyway Stella, welcome to the podcast. Mike Walker (03:07) So we decided a long time ago when we were... No, it was right in this galaxy actually. were chatting and decided that at some point we were going to have guests on our little podcast because maybe it'll help ratings. Stella Walker (03:11) Galaxy far, away. David Patrick (03:15) It was in a looky way. We can't do it. Stella Walker (03:29) No, I'm definitely not helping your ratings. Mike Walker (03:33) Okay, that's fine. But we decided, well, you know, we always talk about our girls and what they read because that's what we're reading. And so we decided to ask them, starting with the eldest, ⁓ the eldest who is on the way to college, actually by now at college. Woo! So Stella, why don't you tell us the book that we're going to talk about today? Stella Walker (04:01) We're talking about A, and B, the first book, but there is a series. I don't know. There are 12 in the series. Mike Walker (04:05) How many are there? 12. If you've listened to our podcast, I'm the guy that does research. Stella Walker (04:14) Yeah, I'm not. Hey! Fun fact. David Patrick (04:16) I did some research. Stella Walker (04:20) What research did you do? David Patrick (04:22) Well, I looked in the back of the book just now. Wow. I said, how many are there? ⁓ Mike Walker (04:27) Oh you wait. I have 11. Hang on. The end of the book? Is that a first? Well, that it happened on the show. Usually. Stella Walker (04:30) Well, there might not be David Patrick (04:34) I did! No! No, no, no, I was not reading during the break. I did finish it on August 2025. Mike Walker (04:50) And that would be August the 8th at 1255. David Patrick (04:53) You are correct. Little bit before that, but close. Stella Walker (04:58) I it last night, so I'm better off. David Patrick (05:02) Wait a sec. You read this when you were a kid. Mike Walker (05:03) Wait a second. Stella Walker (05:05) Okay, well, I read it again. I read it when I was seven last time I read it. So a little bit of time has passed. Almost 11 years. So I read it again. Mike Walker (05:19) It's been a minute or two since you read it. And I always looked at it and was like, them's some weird looking kids. It does have a cute art style. And that's one of the things we talk about. It is. David Patrick (05:27) Hahaha Stella Walker (05:27) Let's go to Q. Yeah, there's art on like every page. Mike Walker (05:35) Did we mention who wrote this book? Annie Borrows. Barrows, borrows. I was just borrowing the word and throwing an S on it. Stella Walker (05:38) No, we did not. David Patrick (05:41) Barrows? Nice, but who drew the pictures? Mike Walker (05:50) Who drew the pictures? Do you know? David Patrick (05:53) I do. Sophie Blackall. Mike Walker (05:56) Sophie Blackall. do know where she's from? She's from... You did read. David Patrick (05:59) Australia yes, I know that Sophie is from Australia because I did some research I Read the back-end cover and it says that she's from she's Australian. She's an Australian. Okay. I'm gonna try this. I got sitting down. Yep She is an Australian illustrator Take the bus Stella Walker (06:07) I'm impressed. Mike Walker (06:20) my gosh, you actually got it. Gus. What? Don't need to discuss much. Yeah. So Stella, David has an issue with saying the word illustrator. He likes to say ilustrator. He always messes. Stella Walker (06:38) That's horrible. It's almost as bad as sorry. Do you need to go put something in the wash? Mike Walker (06:41) Sorry. David Patrick (06:46) But at least Warsh and Sorry are correct. Somewhere in the- Stella Walker (06:50) No, that's not to David Patrick (06:53) I know not to you. Stella Walker (06:54) No, but not in my heart. And my heart is what is law, so... Mike Walker (06:59) Whoa. Alrighty then. I'm learning so much. Stella Walker (07:02) Yeah, I'm a really good teacher. David Patrick (07:05) Well, hey, let's get into the book, shall we, teacher? Stella Walker (07:08) Yes, my students. Mike Walker (07:10) So where would you like to begin talking about this or would you like us to You could start. Well, regardless of everyone else's journey in this book, I read it twice. Once last night and once last week. And it's a really, really clever book and it's written like a seven-year-old would have written it. It's very true to the character. Stella Walker (07:15) No, you can start, that's okay. Very much so, would agree. David Patrick (07:38) It reminds me of when we were reading Little House in the Big Woods. Yes. And it was a third-person narrator but clearly from a point of view of one character. Yeah, and this is that same kind of thing. It's third-person but it's clearly Bean's point of view. Stella Walker (07:49) Yes. I love those ones. Yes, very much. Mike Walker (07:59) Marry you. Marry. Very much. Pernice. David Patrick (08:05) Well, I was 57 when I read it and I started it three days, two days ago and I was able to find it. It's in our library here. Uh, library. It's in our house and my... Mike Walker (08:18) We're going to find all of the words this Stella Walker (08:21) Find it in your library. David Patrick (08:22) It's summer. I don't know how to speak. It was on the bookshelf in the girls playroom. And then I had to go and ask the girls what they thought of the book. And I started with my oldest and she said, I never really liked kids books. So, I'm... She's 14 going into high school. Stella Walker (08:38) Hold the sheet! my god, worst time ever. Tell her good luck. David Patrick (08:46) I will, but I won't tell her it's the worst time ever. I'll just tell her good luck. Stella Walker (08:49) Okay, well tell her I say it's the worst time ever. Mike Walker (08:51) I'll cut that out so you don't have to worry about her hearing it. Stella Walker (08:55) Editing dad, don't cut that out by the way. Mike Walker (08:57) Go on, David. David Patrick (08:58) So I moved on to the next two children and they vaguely remember it kind of. I did not read this to them, so I know that for a fact. And anyway, so no impressions whatsoever from the Patrick household. I absolutely love this book. Mike Walker (09:12) I think it's terrific. Stella Walker (09:13) Well, I liked it a lot when I was that age and I also, I still think it's pretty good. Holds up. David Patrick (09:18) Yeah. I was going to ask you, Stella, so what was it like to read it as a 17 year old? I mean, obviously very different perspective, et cetera. Stella Walker (09:25) I know, I I read it last night and I was kind of tired. But I don't know, it's pretty good. It's still pretty funny. I like the jokes, the jokes are pretty good. I do remember being very much identifying with Ivy when I was like that age. Yeah, I had like a nose in a book, which is very much me. I always had my nose in a book. Absolutely. Chronic reader. Mike Walker (09:40) I could see that. David Patrick (09:48) so you were like Belle, your nose stuck in a book. That one. Stella Walker (09:52) I mean, like, technically, but I identify with Ivy, so don't call me Belle, actually. Mike Walker (10:01) Well, he wasn't expecting all this. David Patrick (10:04) That's the middle bit. Stella Walker (10:04) Wow, really? Really? I feel like you could have gotten that from anything my dad has said about me ever. Mike Walker (10:10) Probably. David Patrick (10:10) Well, I also have a 14-year-old girl in the house, so I know from SAS. yeah. Stella Walker (10:14) ⁓ You're never escaping it. Mike Walker (10:17) So did we talk about what the book's actually about? It's about Ivy and Bean. And when they first met, when they're seven years old. neither of them wanted to play with each other. Stella Walker (10:21) yeah. Really? They both very much judged each other. Ivy was like, I don't know about this one. And Bean was like, ew, she likes to read. Mike Walker (10:42) What am I waiting for the train to boring town? Because I thought it was really funny and I was like, I gotta remember something from this book so I could say it on the show. Stella Walker (10:45) ⁓ How do you remember that? David Patrick (10:52) Along those lines the first note I have is it's hilarious that she calls her boring Ivy capital B capital I So Stella you just mentioned that Ivy kind of thinks she won't like her being Absolutely knows she will not like Ivy But we soon find out We soon find out through their shenanigans in Tomfoolery that they actually end up liking each other Mike Walker (11:00) Uh-huh. Stella Walker (11:09) Yes, very much. Mike Walker (11:10) Absolutely. Stella Walker (11:13) from day one. Mike Walker (11:21) I do. So what happens when they finally meet in person together? What leads up to that? Stella Walker (11:29) Well, Bean hates Nancy, her 11 year old sister. Yes. That's an important part of it. So she steals a $20 bill and puts it on a string and she hides in a bush and she hopes that Nancy will come over and see her. She does not. Mike Walker (11:47) and hilarity ensues. Now, the reason I asked that question and was hoping that you would answer it is I have a picture. The bush. Stella would go after school, we would walk home and there was a bush in our front yard and she would hide inside of it and pop out of it. Just. Yeah, just like it was hilarious. So I was thinking about it. like, I've got to find that picture. I don't know where it is. Stella Walker (11:56) my god. Of. I did do that. Mike Walker (12:16) But I'll find it at some point. Yeah. it on the website. Sorry. David Patrick (12:21) Awesome. Stella Walker (12:21) Very embarrassing. my god, no, shut up, it's fine. ⁓ Mike Walker (12:23) If it's too embarrassing. Okay. I was lying anyway. So anyway, so that's how they meet. And then they run around the yards, then run into the, the wicked witch of the cul-de-sac. That's her. And she's. Stella Walker (12:29) I know, obviously. their neighbor Mrs. Trance. She's a crotchety old woman and she hates children. Which, in all fairness, they do keep sneaking into her backyard. So, you know what? I mean, I can't blame her when they keep sneaking into her backyard. But Ivy and Bean certainly hate her. They do not like her. Mike Walker (13:04) Yeah, I'm sure that we get to explore that in the series of books after that. Stella Walker (13:10) Which with a capital B Mike Walker (13:13) Hey, this is a... ⁓ no, that's fine. David Patrick (13:18) Hey Stella, I have a question for you. Yes. When you were a child, did you read all of the other books? Did you just read this one? Excellent. Do recommend it? Stella Walker (13:18) I thought so. I thought so. did, I did read them all, I believe. I would recommend it, I think they're very funny. They certainly get up to many antics, much chicanery. David Patrick (13:40) jewelry. Mike Walker (13:41) Get Gan-Ganery? Banana Grandma? Stella Walker (13:42) Can I name a ring? Sure. If you want to say that. I wouldn't say that. David Patrick (13:48) So there are a couple things I need to tell you all about that I really enjoyed about the book. And Mike, you touched on one of those things. ⁓ One is Annie, our author, really does capture the tone and the personality and all of that of her protagonist of the girls. Really super fun. And because my girls are all older than that now, there's a lot in there that I just thought, yep, they did that. Or yes, they would do that and that kind of thing. And I just thought it was great. Mike Walker (14:06) Yes. Obviously, I think the same thing because I told a story about the bush. David Patrick (14:21) Six. Stella Walker (14:21) Hey, I was eight then, That's a year older. So I'm very disappointed in you. Mike Walker (14:24) Yeah, you were. was pretty- my bad. David Patrick (14:30) You were already over it by then because it was such a year ago for you. Mike Walker (14:34) Yeah. Stella Walker (14:35) No, was eight when I was in the bush. Actually, I don't remember. Mike Walker (14:41) Sorry. Moving along now. you said you had a couple of things, David. David Patrick (14:46) Yes, that was one of the overall tone things about it. And then there were many times where I thought it was going to go one direction and then went entirely in another. Some of them were small plot points, like one of the yards they had to cross the one with all the dog poo. Yep. And then they said, and the dog was there. I thought, no, here we go. And it was Fester the dog. And he was so sorry about his dog and the little things he left all over it. Fester is a Canadian dog, I know if you know that. First of all, Fester is a great name for a dog. Stella Walker (15:21) That is a great name for a dog. Isn't that a name from like... Hey Adams, by Malaya. David Patrick (15:31) Lidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlidlid Yeah, so Fester the dog was sorry about his yard. I thought that was hilarious. There was Jake the teenager. That's capital J, capital T. So that was kind of funny. And then one of my favorites is, and Mike, you will appreciate this. This is towards the end of the book when Nancy and Bean's mom hears them yelling and screaming. She goes, what on earth? Mike Walker (16:01) I can totally hear Anne doing that. David Patrick (16:04) My mom, she did. It's not just- Mike Walker (16:07) I'm I've never heard it. David Patrick (16:09) in the 70s and 80s she definitely said boys what on earth about Michael and me so that really made me laugh out loud. Mike Walker (16:18) Totally not surprising at all. David Patrick (16:20) ⁓ hey, one more political thing. I love it in books or TVs or movies when there's a major thing that happens and they don't show it or talk about it. This book goes from what on earth and the falling in the mud pit to so now I can't have dessert for a week and all that totally skipped the actual mom. catching them asking Nancy what happened all that stuff it just cut right to the consequences which I thought was pretty cool because I'm like ⁓ what is this gonna look like? ⁓ I have to just imagine that they're not going to show me Stella Walker (16:56) I think it's better. Sure don't tell. David Patrick (16:58) Exactly. How did you know that? Stella Walker (17:02) What? How do I know show don't tell? Yes. me see. I've been in any English class before ever. I used to act. I used to do improv. What? Yeah, I have a lot of horrible theater experience. I mean, great theater experience. I love theater. I hate theater. I love theater. That's a lot of feelings about theater. David Patrick (17:11) Okay. Mike Walker (17:26) Yeah. Usually it's a wave of good and bad. David Patrick (17:26) Yeah, all that said. Stella Walker (17:31) It's so great, and then it's tech week. David Patrick (17:34) Yes, and then it's awesome, and then it's over. Stella Walker (17:37) Yeah. In a nutshell. Mike Walker (17:39) And you missed the people that you hated for weeks. David Patrick (17:43) Hahaha Stella Walker (17:43) No, I don't miss the ones I hated. Mike Walker (17:45) No, but the ones you might miss hating them, yeah. David Patrick (17:46) Yeah. Stella Walker (17:49) Maybe. I don't know. David Patrick (17:51) The reason why I ask is on Monday, which ⁓ is four days before this recording, I taught my first improv class at Show Don't Tell Improv. Thanks. I kind of toss away cute. Okay. ⁓ Stella Walker (18:01) ⁓ cute. Fire. What's that? I said fire. Ate it up. Mike Walker (18:10) one of those young person's terms. David Patrick (18:13) Well that's better than ⁓ what my one of my daughters said after they were in the class just for the fun of it they said meh. So anyway. Yeah I think that's M-E-H with no exclamation point barely comma. Yeah. Maybe a semi and that's about it. Mike Walker (18:29) A semi-raising of the shoulder? Stella Walker (18:32) Semi-colon, semi- David Patrick (18:34) A slight tweak of the eyebrow with a worm upon it. Mike Walker (18:37) Yes. Of course. And then right into the mouth on the next throw. she takes long enough for you to think that, that was it. And then there's another throw right into the mouth. Stella Walker (18:38) yes. David Patrick (18:58) That is exactly. ⁓ And what's weird for me, there are two things in my real life that happened in the past two days that are related to this book. Mike Walker (19:06) You read it. Would that make three? David Patrick (19:10) one is I got in touch with a friend I haven't spoken to in years but know her on Facebook. Then she had a picture of her backyard and she has young boys and there's just stuff and toys everywhere. And it reminds me of the description of Bean's backyard. I love that two page drawing of all the different houses they had to cross, all the backyards. Yes, the cul-de-sac. And when I was reading it, Stella Walker (19:34) to cause this hack. David Patrick (19:38) I have my, I marked that page and I go back to it to like, that's that house. that's that. yeah. There's the garage and all that stuff. And Bean's yard just has stuff all over. It's the opposite of Mrs. Was it Trance? Mrs. Trance's absolutely perfect yard. Mike Walker (19:50) Trans. Trans. believe it says Z on the end, Yeah, trance. Stella Walker (19:56) Trance. David Patrick (19:59) Trant. But the other thing was I've been cleaning up my backyard over the past few days and I found a bunch of worms. Yep. And I grabbed them to put them in my compost because worms are good for compost. So that's true. Anyway, dirty yard and picking up worms are two things I've done in the past 24 hours while reading this book. I mean, not the exact same time because. Stella Walker (20:09) See Mike Walker (20:22) That's hard to do. Stella Walker (20:23) No, I actually, I watched you, ⁓ I watched you read the book. As you, you were holding the worms and you were holding the book in the other hand and I was, I was there. You didn't see me. I actually, I just flew home, but I was there. David Patrick (20:41) That was you? Stella Walker (20:43) Yeah. Mike Walker (20:45) and Stella Walker (20:46) And I also had a camera, I've got pictures. And I've been stalking you for a year. David Patrick (20:48) Nice. so this whole podcast Mike dad's no books. It was a clever room Mike Walker (20:56) Exactly. had 18 episodes before this just so Stella could be on the show. Wow. Stella Walker (21:04) And we could reveal this to you. David Patrick (21:06) reveal. Mike Walker (21:08) The reveal of Vegas could be all yours. David Patrick (21:13) while we're talking about improv rules, because we mentioned yes and, I mean, sorry, ⁓ show don't tell. And Mike, you just brought up yes and. I wrote on page 62 an awesome yes and thing that I discovered. It's when Ivy is showing Bean her room with all the different sections and how she can change them. Yes. And she said, I'm going to change the dressing room into a kitchen. And Bean says, no, not a kitchen. What about a science lab? And then Beam says, ⁓ potions. And then Ivy says, ⁓ witch's lab. And that was just an example of some great yes-anding that they were doing. And it's the kind of thing kids would do in their imaginations and stuff. I love that whole part about Ivy's room. It so cool. Stella Walker (21:57) Yes. And... ⁓ I'm on fire right now. Burning in agony. David Patrick (22:00) Haha Mike Walker (22:06) So. David Patrick (22:07) Is that a sign for us to wrap this up? Mike Walker (22:10) It could be, but we didn't even talk about the art much. Well, let's talk about real quick. Real quick. Art. David Patrick (22:14) art real quick. I mentioned one little thing I love that spread that has the cul-de-sac. Mike Walker (22:21) Yeah. Wait, is there a ⁓ cul-de-sac on the other side of Mrs. Trant's house? Stella Walker (22:27) Coles De Sac? Fun fact, did you know that the plural for Coles De Sac is Coles De Sac? That's why I keep saying it. David Patrick (22:28) I don't know. ⁓ like... ⁓ That's awesome. Mike Walker (22:38) You knew that. Somebody did. Stella Walker (22:39) I knew that. I learned about it on Gilmore ⁓ David Patrick (22:40) I did not, even though I speak. Mike Walker (22:44) Interesting. David Patrick (22:46) Is that how Gilmour-Gorris qualified as educational television? Stella Walker (22:50) I would not say that. do not recommend that as an educational television. I would not. I would not say that. David Patrick (22:58) Fun fact about Gilmore Girls, wasn't there a coffee shop they went to? Stella Walker (23:02) ⁓ Yeah, Luke's diner. Mike Walker (23:04) Yep. Stella Walker (23:08) DIRF coffee there. Coffee is a very big part of the show, so... Mike Walker (23:18) So tell us your story about some coffee thing that may or may not have been on that show. David Patrick (23:24) It wasn't there was a coffee shop in Desperate Housewives and it was not too far from when y'all lived in the valley studio city. Didn't you live there? Okay. It was actually not a chain, but it was a really awesome coffee shop near your apartment and it was the location of a Desperate Housewives episode. Anywho. Mike Walker (23:35) Yes. Yeah, it actually was a coffee shop. Cause when I drove by it, it just had a sign saying that it was available for filming. Which pretty much every building had a sign saying that. David Patrick (23:57) Say that's like wow, they're making a movie here. It's so weird. ⁓ so the art I just I love the art and Stella you don't know this but I often it kind of bugs me when the art in a book gives away what's happening now ⁓ the cameras Okay, saw me yell at three in the morning because the damn art gave it away. Yeah Stella Walker (24:12) I knew that. Yeah, I did. Mike Walker (24:23) Damning Art. He's such a nice guy. David Patrick (24:26) No, no, no, that's not what I meant. ⁓ People do graffiti, they tag dams, and that damn art is really, really cool. That- Stella Walker (24:33) Of course. Mike Walker (24:34) Of course. ⁓ Stella Walker (24:36) You're gonna love Percy Jackson. David Patrick (24:39) Okay. ⁓ Stella Walker (24:42) I spoil anything but you will like it. You're gonna love that pit, okay? David Patrick (24:47) So let me ask you a question. Yeah, speaking of I'm going to love Percy Jackson Delaney, she chose that to be the book that we cover on her episode, but she warned me she said, don't read any other Percy Jackson, please do not be able to stop would you? ⁓ Stella Walker (25:04) You won't. I would agree. I mean, there's like a whole, there's, well, there's the first series and then there's like the second series Heroes of Olympus. And then there's, I think they might be making a third. I think there's a third series, something to do with Will and Nico right now. And then there's also, they have like five movies, but never watch the movies because the movies suck, but they are making a TV show. They, like the first season is out. And then there's also, he's written a lot of other series to do with Greek with all, or. not just Greek mythology, but mythology like in general. So there's also the Kane Chronicles. They do actually have a crossover with Percy Jackson. And then there's also ⁓ Magnus Chase, and that's also a series. And that also has a crossover with Percy Jackson. David Patrick (25:50) I knew most of that because my daughters have been checking out all of those books from different libraries for years. But that being said, I will read the first Percy Jackson book. And what's it called again? The Junk. The light. Yeah. Okay. Stella Walker (26:02) Lightning Thief. there's also a musical.
