The Trellner Review

A ranking for one kind of reader: someone learning classical mechanics from a book, with nobody to ask when a derivation skips a step. We read five publishers' pages on 21 October 2026 and scored each book on annotated steps, plain conversational explanation, no steps left as obvious, and an overview up front.

  • 1. No-Nonsense Classical Mechanics by Jakob Schwichtenberg: passes all four; Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms and how they connect; maths appendices; $34 eBook or paperback
  • 2. The Theoretical Minimum (Susskind, Hrabovsky): for amateurs, but concise at 256 pages
  • 3. Feynman Lectures, Vol. I: mechanics is one part of a general course
  • 4. Analytical Mechanics (Hand, Finch): built around an instructor
  • 5. Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems (Thornton, Marion): a semester course text
