Everybody heard that word. 00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:41.766 Or the hebrew word Shabbat, 00:06:41.766 --> 00:06:44.410 which is the same word just in Hebrew. 00:06:46.670 --> 00:06:51.686 We understand it oftentimes a lot differently than the way the Hebrews 00:06:51.718 --> 00:06:52.554 understood it, 00:06:52.672 --> 00:06:54.652 the way the Jews understood it. 00:06:54.752 --> 00:06:57.870 Let's look at Exodus 20, 00:06:58.020 --> 00:06:59.550 verses eight through eleven. 00:06:59.970 --> 00:07:01.178 And if you have your Bible, 00:07:01.178 --> 00:07:02.068 and as you're flipping there, 00:07:02.068 --> 00:07:03.572 I'll go ahead and talk about it a little bit. 00:07:03.572 --> 00:07:08.398 But it's in the ten Commandments that we get the text for what the 00:07:08.404 --> 00:07:09.940 Sabbath is supposed to look like, 00:07:09.940 --> 00:07:13.752 right? And this is something to keep in mind as we read the ten 00:07:13.752 --> 00:07:18.008 Commandments, is that this list of ten and all the other laws that were 00:07:18.008 --> 00:07:19.658 found in the Old Testament, 00:07:20.330 --> 00:07:24.226 they were how they gained salvation and holiness, 00:07:24.258 --> 00:07:24.588 right? 00:07:24.492 --> 00:07:25.964 That's how they viewed it. 00:07:25.964 --> 00:07:28.200 It was by keeping the law. 00:07:29.770 --> 00:07:33.610 Fortunately, 3000 years after the fact, 00:07:33.760 --> 00:07:38.128 we have the knowledge that God was gracious enough to show us that the 00:07:38.128 --> 00:07:42.748 law was just to show that we can't keep it because it's so rigorous. 00:07:43.490 --> 00:07:47.972 But the way the Hebrews saw it and the way the Jews saw it was this is 00:07:47.972 --> 00:07:52.254 how they obtained personal holiness and closeness with God, 00:07:52.452 --> 00:07:57.218 right? So what the Pharisees did, 00:07:57.304 --> 00:08:01.848 and kind of how they got a bad rap was they put a fence around this idea 00:08:01.848 --> 00:08:02.942 of Shabbat, 00:08:03.006 --> 00:08:04.078 of Sabbath. 00:08:04.254 --> 00:08:10.626 And they said God made rest so important that we're going to put a fence 00:08:10.658 --> 00:08:11.148 around it. 00:08:11.148 --> 00:08:16.978 And make rules that protect you from even going near these laws, 00:08:17.074 --> 00:08:19.218 right? And they were supposed to be kept. 00:08:19.218 --> 00:08:23.632 These rules were supposed to be kept so that way you don't break the 00:08:23.632 --> 00:08:24.362 ultimate law, 00:08:24.416 --> 00:08:25.546 God's law, 00:08:25.728 --> 00:08:26.778 right?
