Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here. The unexpected planned popped up on the radar topic this morning is what everybody might be talking about in your different circles, or at least a lot of us, football, NFL, Super Bowl, Super Bowl, 60. Yes, it is, is coming. I was thinking, oh my gosh, it's about 60, and today is going to be the end of playoff games. So playoff season is about to wrap up today. We have the LA Rams and the Seattle Seahawks who put my 40 Niners out. That was a spanking like a beat down. We won't even go into that. That was embarrassing. Not the only team that had an embarrassing ending, but 49 is nine bang. Bang Niner game had an embarrassing ending this season. And then we also have coming up today, the Denver Broncos against the New England Patriots. Yes, we do. Yes we do. And as you can tell by the excitement of Miss Shante in the studio, one of those teams is her team. Let's ride and so I'm gonna tell you, folks, it's all about the Broncos. Yes, it is Ashanti, thank you for being here. Shawn-tá Mitchell 2:43 Thank you for having me. I'm super excited, and I want to say your 40 Niners in the predicament that they were in with all the injured players, they did excellent. So yes, they did lose, yes, and it was a horrible loss, and hard to watch, but to see how far they made it, I commend them. They weren't rather than the Cowboys. Yes, anyway, hey, then I see my and the Raiders, and the Raiders, don't throw them in there too, but go ahead. I'm sorry Tanya Flanagan 3:05 the home team ish. Anyways, today we're talking, well, the reason why we're having this fun conversation, we're talking about football today. And I will not even pretend to be a football expert. I think I started paying even though I grew up with two brothers who both played football. Okay, as a little girl, I was like, What is this sport? My mother was a die hard Cowboys fan, and my brother is still a die hard Cowboys fan. Oh yeah, it was cowboy nation in our house. My dad was always for whoever their team was playing. So he could just go for the underdog or the, you know, the opponents you know, to be antagonistic. And then my other brother, I can never really figure out what his team or who his team was, even though both played football. So I don't know if he was a by default, a family member Association, Cowboy fan. That's something else, right? I don't, I don't know. I had no favorite. Clearly, for me, it was the sun came up and football seemed to be on. Okay, yeah, go to church. You come back, here it is, and the sun goes down and football is still on. And as the youngest member in the family, there's no one to now play with or do anything with, because everybody is on football. So I'm just irritated by the fact that wasn't that on this morning. Is it still on like and God forbid, the cowboys were the Sunday Night Football lineup, right? The feature. Because now my mom has done church, she's done dinner with us. She's done everything like she's an amazing mom, so we've done all these things. Now she's in the recliner, okay? Because the Cowboys are coming on, yeah? So she's ready not bother her, right? You need to go sit down, you need to find a toy, you need to read a book, but you need to, not really, unless you're about to die and you're bleeding to death. My mom was like, you're fine, Shawn-tá Mitchell 4:49 yes, cowboy, that's right. I'm playing Listen, leave me alone. Give me in about three hours, I'm good Tanya Flanagan 4:54 to go. As a kid, I hated football and so and even though we would go to. All my brother's game play, football, most valued player, yada yada yada, all the good stuff. I was watching the cheerleaders. So, okay, my brother's name is Tony, and, well, there's Tony's little sister at the game where the cheerleaders are doing what cheerleaders do, right, right, right. And then I went through my breast cancer and chemo, and I had a good girlfriend who would come to sit with me over the weekend to see how I was feeling, and just helped me. She liked to watch football. Okay? So she was like, I'm gonna come sit with you today on these Sundays, but we have to watch football. I was like, what she I mean, all the movies in the world, all that cable TV, right? And here it is, I watch football. Still gotta do it. So she goes, I know you don't understand the game, but we're gonna watch for I said, I guess I didn't understand the game. About punts. I know about special teams. I know about offside kicks. I know about field goals and downs. I'm still a quarterback. I'm sitting there as a linebacker, as a wide receiver, running back. I understand. Yes, you know, I have fake lawyer at that time. I have fake loyalty to the Jerry Rice, Joe Montana era. So therefore 49 is right, okay, because when you grow I grew up in Arizona, so there was no team that's gonna say. How did you pick the 40 Niners on the West Coast when you got you kind of gravitate toward a California team. Okay, so I just gravitated toward the 40 Niners, right? Like, fine. I'll pick a team. And everyone, knowing absolutely nothing about football, everyone talked about how great Joe Montana was, okay, yeah, and how amazing Jerry Rice was, right? And the combination of the two. So I decided that was my combo. That's what you need. So therefore, the 40 Niners became the team. Now, how did Shawn-tá Mitchell 6:31 your family feel about that, being that they were all cowboy fans. Tanya Flanagan 6:35 Thank you. My daddy is again, yeah, for any team that's playing your Shawn-tá Mitchell 6:39 team. Okay, gotcha, yes. So Tanya Flanagan 6:43 here we are now in chemo, sitting on the couch every Sunday with her, because I would have the appointment blah, blah, blah, tired by Sunday, and so that particular day, she goes, we have to watch it. I was like, I just didn't understand it. Tell you what you pick a team. I'll pick a team. So I took the coats that day for the game we were watching. Tony Dungy was the coach. I took the coats. I forget who she had, I think the Falcons or somebody spanked them. So watch me. Watch me spank you. She looked at me like, What do you even know? Pay attention to Tony dungy's, James, spank you. Right now, right now. Of course, the coats won, okay? And it became this ritual every week, right? So over time, I actually started to watch football appreciate the poeticness that you see in certain plays. I mean, sometimes you see players do some amazing stuff that you just like. If you're not watching, did Shawn-tá Mitchell 7:31 you see that? Right? How did he catch that? Tanya Flanagan 7:33 Can't even make this up, right? Did you Did he caught it with one hand, and honestly, with time, I became a somewhat of a Packers fan, right? Because watching Rogers quarterback, okay, I was like, wait a minute, am I my Packers fan on 40 Niners? Because I was 40 Niners by default. Of you pick something, right? Yeah. And it became a thing where Rogers quarterbacking ability was so impressive in that season or seasons with the Packers. And I was like, I began to care if they won or lost. Okay, so I noticed that there was some allegiance to the Packers. And so I do, I do actually really like the Packers, packers, even though they got put out even earlier than 49 we'll talk about that. Shouldn't have, but did. But okay, so Anywho. So that's kind of how it on my side evolved. So when I got a call and had the privilege of hearing what you do, and what she does, folks, is has formed a group of women, sort of a social network for women who love football. Yes, yes. So we're talking today about the game. We're talking about how she has created community in a different way around the game. And it's not about the men, it's about the women, exactly, and so, so let's talk about you created a group, or created an opportunity for women who like football to come together. So what do you do? And what's it called? Where's this come from? Shawn-tá Mitchell 8:54 So, initially, where it came from is, I found a group, but it was a national group, and they but they didn't have individual chapters. So it was just a group that and they're out of Cleveland, which I do go to, their national conventions. Last year, we went to the Football Hall of Fame, and it was a three day event. We went to the football hall of fame and a couple of other places. We had a guest speaker that came and talked to us. And when I got back home, I thought, I want something that's for Las Vegas. We have it at a national level, but they don't come to Las Vegas. So I wanted something for us to do so that we could plan things together. And so that's when I came up with the Las Vegas black ladies of football. And we started that in February of 2025 we started with about 20 individuals, and now we're up to 330 and so it's growing steadily. We do football clinics. So it's not just you have to know about football. You can just like football, or want to learn about football, or just want the sisterhood of ladies coming together and speaking and fellowshipping and having fun and bantering and laughing and watching the game. And so we've had football clinics. We've had ex Raiders Super Bowl winners come and teach us the game. And so they came over. We did opened it up to about because we do do events. Let me back up, we do events, and we sometimes have Max amounts of what we can do, or people that can attend. And so for this particular one, we had 20 ladies that came together. We had three ex Super Bowl players, which were Raiders, came over. Taught us the game. They we watched the game, we rewinded it, stopped it, and they taught us the plays. They taught us the players, their assignments, what the coaches did. So we have football clinics, so that we teach them, and then we also do presentations that we have on our page, so that if you miss it, you still can go back and look at that PowerPoint presentation and understand what those roles are for each player on the team. So we also do watch parties where we come together and watch the games. So we pick different games throughout the year for us to come together and fellowship and watch games. Now we do give people the option of, if you guys want to put together an event, we'll come and hang out with you. It's just not our event. It's everyone's event. It's everyone's group. We don't say, oh, you can't do this, or you can't do that. We just ask, Hey, let us know. Put it on our page so that we can make sure that we attend with you guys. Because we want it to be a group of Las Vegas ladies and not just one person controlling everything. So I want it to be a community effort. So we've done that this year. We want to open it up a little bit and get back into the community and do some things. And so that's what we're kind of looking at doing next for FY 26 and we have a lot of great things planned Shawn-tá Mitchell 11:28 out. Super cool. Yeah, 20 to Shawn-tá Mitchell 11:31 300 in a year. Tanya Flanagan 11:33 So, so on game day, do you take over some like, do you all come together and, yeah, I mean, do you come together somewhere and watch the game? How many people? Because I know when you have, like the sports book environment, right? In a lot of cases, if you don't get there by a certain time, you don't get a seat, right? So people go in early. They camp as they got their spot, and they show up in whatever spot they like to watch, food and drinks and what have you. So how do you all do that? Shawn-tá Mitchell 12:01 So what I normally do is I try to find the locations that are not as busy. And so I found a couple that we go to regularly, and they've started to know who we are, because we have shirts that are made and everything. And so I just kind of pick out places that are not as busy, because that's helping that community. It's helping the economy, because they don't have as many people coming in. So I let the big places do their thing, and people can gather there, but I try to go into the north I'm in North Las Vegas, and so most of the events are normally in North Las Vegas. We do kind of go around. We've done it in Henderson. We've done it in town square and other places so that other ladies in the different surrounding areas can attend as well, but most of the watch parties are in the North Las Vegas area, and so we find little areas. They're pubs, bars and different things, and just go in and sit down and have a good time. That is really cool. Tanya Flanagan 12:52 Yeah, on those Sundays, because obviously, with 300 people, everyone's not coming to any single location, right? So are multiple events happening every Sunday to where, say, say, a member of the group lives in Henderson, and they put one together, but it's on your page. So others who live in Henderson could go to that one could go in the southwest. Could go in Summerlin is that could go central downtown, you know, Central Valley area. So is that kind of like? Because with 300 people, you guys could have, like, spread out four or five four or five different things that pop up with, you know, 50 people, or something like that. You know, anywhere from 20 to 50 people at each one exactly, and have a decent turnout and kind of share the footage and the experience and the fun Shawn-tá Mitchell 13:34 of it. That's the goal. Yeah, that's the goal, to have it laid out that way this year, being that it's brand new, it's still getting it out. I'm marketing it, you know, sharing it on Facebook and talking about it, and doing platforms like this. So thank you for giving us the opportunity. But these are the type of things that I do to try to just get people aware of who we are, so that we can get to that magnitude of doing it in different places. Right now, I have a group of about four ladies that we've come together, and they help with putting things, with the planning, with planning and being there. And we do we do bingo, we do raffles, we do all kind of things to make it fun. So we're just not sitting there watching the game. Halftime, we'll have events. We coming up. We do like paint and tips and different things like that. So we try to make it fun, so that you Tanya Flanagan 14:23 get together outside of game day as well with the paint and sips. Because obviously, if I'm painting and sipping, I'm not painting and sipping during the football, because I can't miss like the major we do Shawn-tá Mitchell 14:32 at halftime. Well, how fast do y'all paint? We paint? Well, you go in and out, paint apple. We can't we go in and out, paint the football. Yeah, we can't we go in and out. It goes in, it you'd be surprised. You know, people do it as we're watching. I have a great lady that I Tanya Flanagan 14:51 partner, because women are like because, honestly, at this point in my life, my Sunday consists of like, church. I come home, I make brunch, whatever, right? Day football is on for the rest of the day, yeah, but I literally do do everything that I need to do around the house while this football game is on. And sometimes it's because it's not my team, right? So you tend to pay attention less. You're mindful of, you know, what the score is and what this means to my what it means to my team's chances, the standing or, you know, just some team you don't like, or somebody you want to pick on. So you just want their team to lose, so you can be antagonistic, like and also, my brother loves, you know, girls, so not the cow girls, but some Shawn-tá Mitchell 15:34 of the ladies, they just come for the sisterhood. You know, some of them, they don't even have a team. Some of them, they just see it, or their friend has a team, and they come. So it's just something to do to get together. You know what I mean? So that, I think we, we had a really good turnout. I think we had about 1520 last year when we did the set paint and sip. And so we're looking now, and I think I have about 15 signed up so far for our ones coming up for the Super Bowl. So how, Tanya Flanagan 15:59 how'd you get so become such a football. Shawn-tá Mitchell 16:04 What's that? So let's go back to the Colts. I used to be a colts fan. Die Hard. I love Peyton Manning. I love Tony Dungy, but when they turned their back on Peyton Manning, when he broke his neck and he had to go to surgery or not broke his neck, but he had to have neck surgery, and I didn't like the disloyalty to Peyton Manning, and so when he left and went to the Broncos, I did too. Now let me tell you my family, I didn't go to the Jets, but go ahead. Okay, yeah, thank you. But my family, being that I'm from Oklahoma, we don't have a football team, so one side of my family are Broncos, the other side cowboys and so me, being the rebel that I am, I chose to do the Colts because I didn't want to do either one. But once Peyton Manning went over to the Broncos, my Bronco side of the family was like, Hey, we got you, you know, so that's how. But my family's a die hard football team, as you know Oakland, well, you might not know, but Oklahoma is a football state. We have those Exactly. So I was raised I'm not a Sooners fan, I'm OSU Go Pokes. I have no dog in the fight, exactly. But I watched it just like you just growing up, every Sunday or Saturday, going to games. I did a lot of high school football teams, I water girl, all kinds of things. And so I was always into it, just because it was something to do. Not that I liked the game, but it was something to do. It was fun, it was exciting. You always were doing something. And so it just kind of grew as time as I grew. It just kind of grew with it. Tanya Flanagan 17:39 So, okay, yeah, that's how you found your way onto the field, sort of, kind of exactly. That's fun, because I was like, wow, she even developed this. And so you have, so are there chapters now in other places, or is it just because you talked about this convention? And how many people are at a convention? Shawn-tá Mitchell 18:00 So the national convention that we did in July of last year, there was a total of 340 ladies. Tanya Flanagan 18:06 So is there like a board and they plan it? Does it move? So is the intention that this will move around the country to different destinations? Shawn-tá Mitchell 18:14 Yes, this year it's going to be in North Carolina. Last year it was in Cleveland. Last year was the second time they've done it. This year will be the third. The first year was in Atlanta. Yeah, okay, yeah. Tanya Flanagan 18:26 And it's, I'm assuming, women from all walks of life, like, what type of you know, what's the typical person? Is it? Shawn-tá Mitchell 18:33 I met filmmakers, I met lawyers, I met umpires for baseball, basketball or not by basketball, baseball, softball. I met, I said, lawyers, nurses, just all kinds. I even a lady that was an advocate for domestic violence. She has her own platform talk she was gave it was given an award of some sort, like there are a lot of elite ladies. It was, it was a really, really fun time, and I like the welcome, because they broke us up. So me and a couple of ladies from Las Vegas went, but they made sure they separated us so that we weren't together, and we met other individuals. So I met ladies from California. She works for the health department in California. I What met one lady that was a pianist in New York. I mean, it was, it was just a whole gambit, whole gambit. Tanya Flanagan 19:30 So how many days does the national go on? You you get, is it a weekend, a Thursday to Sunday, or Thursday to Monday? It's a Thursday. You get through the whole Sunday football game day, right? Or no, Shawn-tá Mitchell 19:43 no, because it's in July. So football is not going well. It's in July. It's in July. I think Tanya Flanagan 19:49 this would happen during the heart of football season, but it doesn't that seems like that would be, like, my apologies for the assumption that I made that this is a during the heart of you know, Shawn-tá Mitchell 19:58 yeah, you it would be a. Idea, but I think that they don't do it so that, because a lot of the ladies that attend our season ticket holders, because they really go, they're really for the like, Die Hard. Okay, Die Hard. So they don't do it during the football season, one away exactly from their actually, man, yes, yes. So, and I'll give you, you know, the website, Tanya Flanagan 20:20 so what they do, it is it like now that we I realize it's in the summer, a full itinerary in the city of activities, kind of like any other conference, where you fly in and there's all these activities playing that allow you to explore the city, get to know the people that you're at the conference with, maybe sit through some classes, because you talked about workshops that teach you have. So I'm assuming the idea you had to come back and have these instructional workshops, or instructional like social sessions, come from going to the national setup and seeing what they do, and then bringing that back and saying, We can do that here, and increase the interest, and then whereby increase the overall community that's participating in this process. Shawn-tá Mitchell 21:01 Yep, that's exactly what we did, and we could, I felt like bringing it to Las Vegas and making it a smaller chapter. We had a little bit more control of what we could do and how we could put things together and help ladies understand. And then if they want to participate in the National Conference, they have that as a possibility. But this way, we can kind of handle things in our own manner of what we want to do. We don't have to follow suit necessarily, of everything that they do. And we can do something that's a little bit more catered to Las Vegas, you know. So I want to do Raider things, because raider is the home team, even though, you know, I bag on them a couple of times a game, but they are, Tanya Flanagan 21:39 it's not fun if people are in heaven, you know, they're poke. And I don't have any issues with the Cowboys. I just like to poke at my brother and exactly my best friend, who's a Cowboy fan, and one of my good girlfriends, I just call them the cowgirls, yeah, but and send those reels where they have on skirts and, you know, because it's funny, but I'm sure there are some things that they can find Shawn-tá Mitchell 22:01 for me as well. But, Tanya Flanagan 22:02 for folks who are interested in knowing more websites, social media, how does, how should one follow or get in contact? Yes, they want to engage. Shawn-tá Mitchell 22:12 We're on Facebook. It's Las Vegas ladies. Las Vegas black ladies of football and so that's the only stream that we have is right now on Facebook, I try to keep it kind of centralized so that I can keep up with people coming in, because I make sure that they're actual people. You know, in this world today, you have to make sure that they're not bots and different things. And so it's easier for me just to contain one social media right now. So if you look us up on Facebook, you'll see us, and you have my information there for you, and so anybody can look up, you know, if you want to learn about football, if you we do some things in the community to give back. So that's one of the, one of the things we want to focus on, you know, in 26 is making sure that not only are we fellowshipping and doing sisterhood, but taking that out into the community to do some things to give back as well. Tanya Flanagan 23:00 So that's awesome. Now nationally, is it for exclusively for African American women? Yes. Okay, so this is, are there other groups, like four different cultural factions? Is this? So is the way that this is set up, that there's Latinas, Shawn-tá Mitchell 23:16 and, yes, they have and then they just have women's, women who love women who love football, okay? And so that's really interesting, yeah. So there's all different kinds. And, you know, even though it is Las Vegas, black ladies of football, we open it up. It's not like, No, you can't. You know what I mean? That was just something that we came up with. But we're open, you know, where we love everybody, and we want to just have a good time. And if you're want to be part of the sisterhood and come and fellowship and enjoy. Tanya Flanagan 23:41 We're open to that. Now, is there any cost to becoming part of it, or is it just open you come and the costs are incurred as you hang out. And incur costs. Shawn-tá Mitchell 23:49 That's correct, as you as you hang out like so for our upcoming Super Bowl event, you know, it will be cost incurred because we're going to have a facility. We're going to, you know, do the paint and the sipping and the eating and different things, because we're going to get a caterer to come in and cater things like that. So we do that, but we do also do raffles and different things so that we can have some budgets to do other things, so that everything that we put or that we put on you don't have to pay for, because we want to do some type of things to give back to Tanya Flanagan 24:18 lack of return investment of time and return appreciation. Yeah, exactly. So that's fun. It's really a cool concept. I especially like the part where you teach people, because there are times when I'm watching the game, and while I understand the high level basics, or high level, you know, details of how football works, there are little things that happen, and I have a question. Well, why? Right? And what gets crazy is that when I'm watching it with friends, because I get the majority of it, they answer the question like, I know what they're talking about. Don't you see me asking you a question? Why are you responding to me? And they look at me like, but you know, football, I'm. Do the answer to that question I would never have asked exactly, and then they're like, oh, it's like, I appreciate how much credit you're giving me for being, like, understanding, understanding a guru, this guru of football. But in all actuality, yeah, I still, in most days, I just know how to talk a lot. And I mean a lot. I mean, like a ton, like a mega ton. Shawn-tá Mitchell 25:22 Of trash. Yes, yes. Tanya Flanagan 25:25 About what has occurred in the final moment, right? Right? When there was a touchdown score and the field goal kick was good, Shawn-tá Mitchell 25:34 right, right, right, well, you missed it, and I needed you to miss it, Tanya Flanagan 25:37 whatever the situation is that's working in my face. Yes, that's right, that's very well versed on how to observe that occurred, because I've gotten a, you know, live professional football game before, which is very cool to go to, but, but when you are not like someone who's a coach or you see everything, right? Yes, you're literally in a professional game. Like, wait, what happened? Because you didn't see it? Yeah, I don't even care. I've sat on the 35 yard line, row 18 from the field, right watching the Cowboys. Yes, that's okay. And they played the Cardinals. It was Christmas Day, and my best friend. Because oftentimes, you know, when you've been friends for a really long time, you don't know what to get one another. So one day I made this flip coming about going to a live football game. Okay, so she did her due diligence that particular year to find tickets to a football game. The game happened to be Christmas Day, and I'm from Phoenix, so I was visiting family. Okay, okay, so she surprises me with tickets to a football game. Well, she got the tickets from a guy that we knew who owns a restaurant there, but at the time, he was doing the food for the team prior to the game, so they gave him a certain number of tickets. Of course, he just resold tickets to her, right? So that's how we ended up on the 3050, year old, okay? Row 18. Row 18, just sitting there on the phones, texting because it's so loud in the stadium, right? So we're on the phones, texting, and the man behind us like, do you like football? Shawn-tá Mitchell 27:04 Yes, yes, we do hear her Tanya Flanagan 27:07 talking, so I'm just gonna text her, right? But so much happens. And I've gone to see the 40 Niners play the Broncos stadium. That's one of my bucket lists. I have done that very cool. And I've seen the Seattle Seahawks play the Oakland Raiders when they before they before they became the Las Vegas Raiders, okay, during my reporter days for the Seattle Times, and then I saw the, I think it was the Rams or the Chargers play somebody down in Southern California. I forget maybe the two of them were playing each other that particular game. But anyways, done some different football right? But you don't see a lot of stuff. Sometimes, when it happens on the field, what you see is, so when you're at home, you get the playback. And so the playback is fun, but Shawn-tá Mitchell 27:50 well, and it teaches you too, you know, because the things that you miss, you get to go back and you'll see, and you're like, oh, because you automatically think, oh, they hit that line, or they they crossed it, and then they play it back, and you're like, Oh yeah, no, he didn't get that, you know. So I love that. And I wanted to say really quick that we've done two clinics this week this year. We did one at Hattie Marie's, which Brandon Marshall, which is a Bronco Super Bowl winner, has a restaurant there. So we did one there, and he did a clinic, and he did the same thing. He broke he all down, all down, and it was so appreciative, because he just popped up.
