Midnight Special is Jeff Nichol's 2016 sci-fi homage to Spielberg featuring a super-powered child, a protective father, and Adam Driver as a charming NSA agent. Released the same year as his Oscar-nominated civil rights drama Loving, Midnight Special is Nichols’ most ambitious and personal movie and strangely, his least successful. Nichols has stated in interviews that this was his least well-executed story and that he wrote it with a chip on his shoulder.
