Pure Victory Podcast

Quit trying to quit porn - and train yourself instead! In this week's episode, Matt and Braden discuss why trying hard to quit porn won't get you anywhere and what it practically looks like to 'train yourself' instead.

Show Notes

Welcome to episode #19! In this week's episode, Matt and Braden chat about why trying hard to get porn out of your life will leave you feeling stuck and defeated. Practically learn the difference between 'trying hard' and 'training yourself in godliness’ and why it’s absolutely essential that you have the right approach.

We Try Hard in Our Own Strength
We often try hard in our own strength and understanding. We try to beat porn on our own, but keep it hidden so that we don't need others or God. We try to keep ahead of it by trying to avoid the surface behavior without dealing with the underlying issues. Often, we'll pray more or read the Bible more out of guilt or because we want to get free from porn, rather than simply wanting to know God. If we don't understand the noose of addiction we will never be free no matter how hard we try because we're approaching it with the wrong mindset.

Train Yourself in Godliness
We need to grow in our relationship with God first and understand who He is and who He says we are. Otherwise, our understanding is based on feeling defeated or we view ourselves as being worthless or alone. Training means changing our mindset and allowing God to heal our minds and hearts and that better sets us up to have our lives changed.

God Desires A Well-Rounded Relationship With Us
By getting to know God better, we will be growing and getting healing in the process. Training in godliness means becoming a new person, whereas trying on our terms means we are only focusing on beating porn, while not fully allowing God into our lives. This often leads to being stunted and even being more addicted than before because we are focused on performance, not on healing or relationship with God and others.
