गुडाकेशः लक्ष्मणः

श्रीरामस्य वनवासकाले घटिता घटना एषा । लक्ष्मणः गुडाकेशः इति प्रसिद्धः इति तु वयं जानीमः । गुडाका नाम निद्रा । निद्रायाः ईशः गुडाकेशः । निशादेवीतः प्राप्तवरः एषः । किन्तु किञ्चन निबन्धम् आसीत् । तत् च यावती निद्रा लक्ष्मणेन त्यज्येत तावतीं निद्राम् अन्यः कश्चित् स्वीकुर्यात् इति । सीतायाः यादृशी पतिभक्तिः तादृशी एव पतिभक्तिः ऊर्मिलायाः अपि । अतः सा निद्रादेव्याः प्रस्तावं ससन्तोषम् अङ्गीकृतवती । तदनन्तरं चतुर्दश वर्षाणि यावत् निरन्तरं निद्रां कृतवती । लक्ष्मणः रात्रिसमये अपि जागरितः सन् सीतारामयोः रक्षणम् अकरोत् ।

During Rama’s exile, Lakshmana became known as Gudakesha — lord over sleep (gudaka meaning sleep). He had received a boon from the goddess of night to remain awake, but with one condition: the sleep he renounced must be borne by someone else. Just as Sita was devoted to her husband, so too was Urmila, Lakshmana’s wife, deeply devoted. She willingly accepted the goddess’s proposal and took upon herself all the sleep Lakshmana gave up. Thus, for fourteen years Urmila slept continuously, while Lakshmana remained ever wakeful, guarding Rama and Sita even through the nights.
