church in Ephesus as believers, okay, as Christ followers. 00:06:20.100 --> 00:06:22.260 I think sometimes we forget that. 00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:25.240 You know, Paul's not writing a letter to somebody who doesn't know God. 00:06:25.520 --> 00:06:29.900 In this case, he's writing to people who do know God, who are supposed to know God, 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:31.600 who are followers of 00:07:34.580 I don't know if you've paid much attention to the headings sometimes in the translations that we have, 00:07:34.700 --> 00:07:40.700 whether it's the ESV, NIV, King James, whatever translation is that you read from God's word. 00:07:41.840 --> 00:07:46.580 But at the top of certain sections of God's words, it breaks the scriptures down for us, 00:07:46.620 --> 00:07:50.640 or headings that describe the content for which you're about to read. 00:07:51.320 --> 00:07:55.960 It's the translators of scriptures way of kind of giving us some insight on about what we're to read. 00:07:56.740 --> 00:08:01.500 And here are some of the things that, the headings that are throughout different translations 00:08:01.500 --> 00:08:04.060 covering the passage of scripture we're Christian living. 00:08:14.600 --> 00:08:16.400 Living as children of light. 00:08:17.880 --> 00:08:18.920 Live in holiness. 00:08:19.880 --> 00:08:24.880 So it's giving you and I, you and I, the idea that this passage that Paul wrote about 00:08:24.880 --> 00:08:28.900 is telling us how you and I are to live our life in Christ. 00:08:30.120 --> 00:08:34.800 In 31 years of ministry, I've heard quite often Christ followers ask the question, 00:08:35.240 --> 00:08:36.800 how do I live the Christian life? 00:08:38.560 --> 00:08:39.660 The answer is simple. 00:08:40.700 --> 00:08:45.440 Read God's word, and you will discover the life that God wants you to live. 00:08:45.620 --> 00:08:47.080 It really is that simple. 00:08:47.740 --> 00:08:48.580 Read God's word. 00:08:50.300 --> 00:08:54.380 For my own life here in the last month or so, I've been reading through Proverbs. 00:08:54.540 --> 00:08:55.940 I'm reading back through it now. 00:08:57.180 --> 00:09:02.160 Every day, whatever the day is, this is the 29th, so I would be reading chapter 29 of Proverbs. 00:09:02.340 --> 00:09:08.760 And all through Proverbs, God is using Solomon to share his wisdom about how to follow God 00:09:08.760 --> 00:09:11.260 and his wisdom about how not to follow the world. 00:09:12.340 --> 00:09:18.500 And no matter what the case is, you discover all aspects of life by reading the book of Proverbs. 00:09:19.420 --> 00:09:24.320 It's God's way of showing you and I, this is the right way to live, the wise way to live. 00:09:24.900 --> 00:09:28.200 And this is the way not to live, the foolish way to live. 00:09:28.820 --> 00:09:33.160 It takes a lifelong commitment from you and I to be students of God's word 00:09:33.160 --> 00:09:37.720 and to apply God's word to our life, not area that Paul is kind of giving us that drive-through answer 00:09:49.540 --> 00:09:52.920 to that question we ask, how do we live the Christian life? 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:56.500 Just in these little bit, this small passage here in verses, 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:02.420 he's giving us a quick understanding of what you and I need to do to live this Christian life. 00:10:03.080 --> 00:10:08.500 He's driving home the thought of you and I maturing in our faith and growing in our faith. 00:10:09.500 --> 00:10:12.820 The big idea is found in verses 22 and 24. 00:10:12.940 --> 00:10:20.800 That's how Paul sums it up by simply stating to put off your old life and to put on the new self. 00:10:21.300 --> 00:10:24.660 To put off your old self and to put on the new self. 00:10:25.300 --> 00:10:26.760 So let's break this down together. 00:10:27.420 --> 00:10:30.360 The first thing we want to look at is put off your old self. 00:10:30.620 --> 00:10:32.320 What in the world is Paul saying? 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:34.400 What is my old self? 00:10:35.160 --> 00:10:39.960 My old self is that way I used to live before I ever met Christ as my Lord and Savior. 00:10:41.020 --> 00:10:47.820 My old self is the way I used to live before I ever came to know Christ as my Lord and Savior. 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:49.420 That's the old self. 00:10:50.460 --> 00:10:52.720 Look with me once again in verse 17. 00:10:53.980 --> 00:10:57.820 Now this, Paul is saying, now this I say and testify in the Lord. 00:10:57.920 --> 00:10:59.860 It says, this is not just from me. 00:10:59.940 --> 00:11:00.880 This is not my words. 00:11:01.020 --> 00:11:02.520 This is from the Lord. 00:11:02.880 --> 00:11:09.460 This is testifying to the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do. 00:11:10.180 --> 00:11:15.060 He used that, kind of that phrase earlier on in Ephesians, walk worthy. 00:11:15.640 --> 00:11:19.800 And once again, this time he's saying, don't walk as the Gentiles do. 00:11:20.360 --> 00:11:22.380 In the futility of their minds. 00:11:23.420 --> 00:11:26.320 So the first thing of the old self that he mentions here is this. remember, there's something else that Paul wrote about in Romans chapter 12, verse 2. 00:11:39.720 --> 00:11:43.620 The first part of that, he says, do not be conformed to this world. 00:11:44.280 --> 00:11:46.140 Don't walk like the Gentiles do. 00:11:46.440 --> 00:11:48.580 Don't be conformed to this world. 00:11:50.020 --> 00:11:52.220 Another aspect that we see in this verse is this. 00:11:52.640 --> 00:11:54.660 The old self has a foolish mind. 00:11:56.660 --> 00:11:59.180 We're going to talk in a moment what the new self has. 00:11:59.880 --> 00:12:06.320 But the old self, that self that relies on itself, that self that relies on the world, it has a foolish mindset. 00:12:07.700 --> 00:12:11.080 It doesn't think the way that God desires for you and I to think. 00:12:12.900 --> 00:12:21.220 Look at verse 18 and 19 as he continues, Paul continues to give us the idea and show to you and I what this old self looks like. 00:12:23.160 --> 00:12:25.000 They are darkened in their understanding. 00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:34.360 That's a pretty vivid illustration of what Paul is trying to drive home about a person who doesn't know the Lord. 00:12:34.460 --> 00:12:36.120 They are darkened in their understanding. 00:12:36.120 --> 00:12:42.560 So how in the world can they know what you're thinking as a Christian because they don't know what a Christian thinks? 00:12:43.420 --> 00:12:46.020 They're darkened to the concept of who God is. 00:12:46.520 --> 00:12:56.640 He goes on to say they're alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart. 00:12:57.460 --> 00:12:59.260 He's not saying they're ignorant people. 00:12:59.380 --> 00:13:01.480 He's not saying they're not intelligent. 00:13:01.980 --> 00:13:04.400 But what he is saying is they don't know the things of God. 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:12.480 That old self, that life that you used to live was not the way that God would have you to live. 00:13:12.900 --> old life, what happens is the heart becomes hardened to the things of God. 00:13:28.660 --> 00:13:34.700 The more a person lives opposite of the truth of God's word, the more their life is turned away --> 00:13:48.900 I think we all know what callous means. 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:58.120 If you've worked out in your yard or if you've done anything by having a handle in your hand, you know that over time as you work, you begin to develop calluses. 00:13:59.340 --> 00:14:01.660 They're around your knuckles or right here on your hand. 00:14:02.460 --> 00:14:04.360 I need to do a little more work in my yard. 00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:05.840 I don't feel very many of them. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:15.300 But you know, in our life, when we do the same thing over and over again that doesn't represent God, we become callous to who God is. 00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.680 And that's the visual that Paul has given you and I. 00:14:18.740 --> 00:14:21.240 They have become callous and have given themselves up. 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:28.460 They've given in to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 00:14:29.460 --> 00:14:34.100 A person that decides to continue to live in the 21. 00:15:02.260 --> 00:15:04.800 I have followed the Lord for many years. 00:15:06.300 --> 00:15:10.900 And I don't know how many countless times I have read Ephesians chapter 4. 00:15:11.220 --> 00:15:15.720 And this section specifically, especially back in the youth minister days. 00:15:17.760 --> 00:15:24.240 But for some reason, in this moment, as I was preparing for this message, the Lord gave me one of those wow moments. 00:15:25.160 --> 00:15:30.360 One of those moments that says, Dave, I think you missed this the last time you read this part of Scripture. 00:15:32.140 --> 00:15:32.760 And it's one of those moments. 00:15:32.760 --> 00:15:35.640 And it's one of those things that just jumped off the pages of God's Word. 00:15:38.580 --> 00:15:40.120 Look at verse 20 with me. 00:15:41.780 --> 00:15:44.740 After Paul has gone through and saying, this is the old life. 00:15:44.800 --> 00:15:46.720 This is what the old life looks like. 00:15:46.980 --> 00:15:57.680 Remember, he's talking to believers in the church in Ephesus. 00:15:57.880 --> 00:16:01.240 He says, this is not the way you learned Christ. 00:16:02.600 --> 00:16:05.300 And this is what really got my attention. 00:16:05.900 --> 00:16:08.680 Assuming that you have heard about him. 00:16:09.940 --> 00:16:13.280 Now again, these are believers that Paul is sending this letter to. 00:16:14.160 --> 00:16:18.400 Assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him. 00:16:20.400 --> 00:16:30.060 How many times have I just gone past that and not held on to that moment? 00:16:31.300 --> 00:16:36.580 You see, a Christ follower has a learned relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:16:37.960 --> 00:16:40.840 Before I met my wife, Trish, she's not here this morning. 00:16:40.940 --> I had knowledge of who she was. 00:16:52.200 --> 00:16:59.020 But then as we began today, and then 26 years later, as long as we've been married together, 00:16:59.460 --> 00:17:02.640 I am still learning about my wife, Trish. 00:17:03.900 --> 00:17:07.320 You see, I can have knowledge about who Christ is. 00:17:07.380 --> 00:17:10.100 I can have knowledge about who God is. 00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:13.860 But what Paul is saying here is, learn knowledge is this. 00:17:14.740 --> 00:17:18.060 You have knowledge along with interaction. 00:17:18.760 --> 00:17:21.960 You have knowledge along with engagement. 00:17:22.920 --> 00:17:26.740 It's not knowledge that I know about Christ from what I've read in Scripture, 00:17:27.100 --> 00:17:31.940 but it's the knowledge that I have learned about Christ because I walk with him daily. 00:17:33.020 --> 00:17:35.180 I am in relationship with Christ. 00:17:35.180 --> 00:17:40.900 And so, when my life intersects with God's Word, there's something that is happening. 00:17:41.080 --> 00:17:42.560 There's something that's going on. 00:17:42.900 --> 00:17:47.380 I am choosing either to be obedient to God's Word or I'm choosing to be just knowledge, but engagement, relationship. 00:18:00.540 --> 00:18:04.380 If we're just to gain knowledge through reading, what good is that? 00:18:04.540 --> 00:18:07.280 That's not what God And maybe that busy schedule calls you on a Sunday morning and say, you know, I'll go to church next Sunday. 00:32:14.480 --> 00:32:17.400 Or maybe that busy schedule say, you know, I've hit it hard 00:33:40.240 --> 00:33:45.820 And as I read a lot about solitude and silence, because I didn't know a whole lot about it, I knew what silence meant. 00:33:46.660 --> 00:33:53.300 But the idea of practicing solitude and silence was one of the things I was challenged with, and it was that. 00:33:54.300 --> 00:33:56.900 Use the time in your car as a retreat. 00:33:56.900 --> 00:34:03.080 Use the
