The Next Reel Film Podcast

Ten years ago, we decided to start up a little podcast called Movies We Like with a conversation about ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’ Well, that podcast has grown and blossomed over time, becoming The Next Reel, and the day this episode releases – November 11th, 2021 – will be our ten year anniversary! Join us as we return to where it all started for a look back at the origins of our podcast as well as Spielberg’s film.

Show Notes

"You’re not the podcast I knew ten years ago.”

“It’s not the years, honey, it’s the mileage.”

It’s fun revisiting Spielberg’s 1981 classic Raiders of the Lost Ark, the film that we used as our launching point for this podcast. In honor of our ten year anniversary, we thought it would be fun to return to where it all began and have another conversation about Raiders as well as what we’ve been doing over the last ten years. So join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we dig back into the archives with Indiana Jones to celebrate our anniversary.

It’s not just Raiders of the Lost Ark we discuss.

Sure, we talk about Spielberg’s 1981 masterpiece, but we also talk about how we came to the decision to start a podcast. Why did it take Andy so long to jump on the podcasting bandwagon all those years ago? And why did it take him so long to get a better audio system?

We also talk about the origins as Movies We Like and our early, looser format. With time, everything’s evolved and (hopefully) improved. And other than our summer hiatuses, which we started a few years ago, we’ve been keeping consistent on the podcast with a new episode every week, not counting member bonus episodes and more.

But we do dig into Raiders of the Lost Ark a bit, and we also talk about our reactions to what we thought in that first episode. We look at what Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, and more have been up to since we last discussed them. We talk about the ten consistent team members who worked on all four films. And we look at awards and the numbers for the movie.

It’s a delightful conversation and a great way to return to where it all began. If you haven’t seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, by all means stop reading and go watch it immediately, but if you have, tune in and enjoy this retrospective episode! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!

Andy Nelson
With over 25 years of experience in film, television, and commercial production, Andy has cultivated an enduring passion for storytelling in all its forms. His enthusiasm for the craft began in his youth when he and his friends started making their own movies in grade school. After studying film at the University of Colorado Boulder, Andy wrote, directed, and produced several short films while also producing indie features like Netherbeast Incorporated and Ambush at Dark Canyon. Andy has been on the production team for award-winning documentaries such as The Imposter and The Joe Show, as well as TV shows like Investigation Discovery’s Deadly Dentists and Nat Geo’s Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers. Over a decade ago, he started podcasting with Pete and immediately embraced the medium. Now, as a partner at TruStory FM, Andy looks forward to more storytelling through their wide variety of shows. Throughout his career, Andy has passed on his knowledge by teaching young minds the crafts of screenwriting, producing, editing, and podcasting. Outside of work, Andy is a family man who enjoys a good martini, a cold beer, a nice cup o’ joe. And always, of course, a great movie.

What is The Next Reel Film Podcast?

A show about movies and how they connect.
We love movies. We’ve been talking about them, one movie a week, since 2011. It’s a lot of movies, that’s true, but we’re passionate about origins and performance, directors and actors, themes and genres, and so much more. So join the community, and let’s hear about your favorite movies, too.
When the movie ends, our conversation begins.
