White talks about the importance of investing at the earliest stage in the life of an innovation-focused company.

These early investments allow the firms to attract other sources of capital and ultimately scale their innovative ideas to national and international markets. White says NBIF has generated an average annual return of 6.6 percent over 18 years on the money it has invested in startup companies. Too bad they are not open to individual investors.
