Health in the Spirit

Gluttony is the sin nobody confesses — and half the time we celebrate it in the parish hall. Ryan and Annie take on mukbang culture, the emotional pull of food, and the question underneath every meal: who's in charge? Plus Annie's no-sugar story, and a 30-day challenge to find out where you stand.

Show Notes

There's a sin most of us will never confess — and half the time we're celebrating it in the parish hall. Ryan and Annie take on gluttony: not the cartoon version with the Roman emperor, but the version that looks like a chocolate croissant every stressful afternoon, or the show you can't wait to get to once the kids are down. The question underneath it isn't how much did you eat. It's who's in charge.
Annie tells what happened the first time she went no-sugar — the yeast overgrowth and parasite that were driving the cravings, and the part she didn't expect: that stripping out the sugar left her feeling stripped, and showed her exactly how much comfort she'd been getting from the next treat instead of from God. Plus Thomas Aquinas on why even eating too little can be gluttony, why food is never a neutral decision, and a piece of homework that has nothing to do with your own plate: go feed your priest something that will actually fuel him.
Take the No Sugar Challenge
The challenge they mention is The Wellness Way's No Sugar program — 30 days, all added sugar and simple carbs out. The free guide, the foods-to-enjoy and foods-to-avoid lists, and the grocery list are here: thewellnessway.com/guides/no-sugar. If it's hard, that's your answer.

What is Health in the Spirit?

Health in the Spirit is a Christian health and wellness podcast with Dr. Ryan and Annie DeNome, a chiropractor and a theologian raising a family in Cincinnati, Ohio. Each week they bring holistic health, the wisdom of the healing saints, and the teaching of the Church into one conversation about how to live well, body and soul. Rooted in Saints, Scripture, and the Catechism, the show explores what the ancient wisdom of the Church has to say about the modern health crisis: nutrition, movement, rest, healing, and raising a healthy family. New episodes every Tuesday, beginning July 7, 2026.
