D EPISODE 75: THE BATHROOM TEST (WHY CLEAN RESTROOMS SELL MORE FOOD) Have you ever walked into a restaurant, ordered a meal, and then gone to use the restroom while you wait? You open the door, and the trash can is overflowing, there are paper towels everywhere, and the floor is sticky. Immediately, a thought pops into your head: If they let the bathroom look like this, what does the kitchen look like? You lose your appetite. The exact same thing happens in a convenience store. A dirty bathroom doesn't just lose you a restroom customer; it loses you a food service customer. Welcome back to C-Store Legends. I’m Mike Hernandez. Today we are talking about The Bathroom Test. In the Dive phase, cleaning the bathroom feels like a punishment. It is the job nobody wants to do. But here is the reality: the restroom is the most judged room in your building. Customers will forgive a messy shelf. They will not forgive a disgusting bathroom. When a customer pulls off the highway, their primary goal is often the restroom. If that restroom is spotless, they feel safe. If they feel safe, they walk over to the roller grill, they grab a coffee, or they order a slice of pizza. If that restroom is a disaster zone, they walk straight out the front door without spending a dime. Your job isn't just to scrub toilets; your job is to protect the food sales. The secret to a clean bathroom isn't one massive deep clean at the end of the shift. The secret is the "15-Minute Sweep." Every time you do a trash run or check the coffee station, you pop your head into the restroom. Pick up the one piece of paper on the floor. Wipe the counter. It takes ten seconds, but it stops the room from spiraling out of control. When I am off the clock, I love checking out local spots, whether it's grabbing a great Philly cheesesteak or heading over to the Yard House for a burger. As someone who has spent his life in the convenience store industry, I can't turn off my retail brain. Even when I am just a customer paying for a meal, I run the Bathroom Test. If the restroom in that restaurant is trashed, I am immediately skeptical of the kitchen. I know how operations work. Cleanliness is a culture. If the team doesn't care about the front of the house, they definitely don't care about the back. Your customers are running that exact same test on you every single day. They are deciding if your hot dogs are safe to eat based on the smell of your restroom. Alright, let’s protect the sales. Your job is to make sure every customer passes the test. Here is your Solo Quest for this week. "The 15-Minute Sweep." For your next shift, do not wait until the end of the night to check the restroom. Set a mental timer. Every hour, walk in, pick up the loose paper, wipe the sink, and walk out. Prevent the mess; don't just react to it. I have a "Restroom Readiness Checklist" for you. It’s a fast, 5-point visual check you can memorize so you never miss a detail when you do your sweeps. Text the word CLEAN to 9 5 6-8 9 7-9 1 9 2. That’s CLEAN to 9 5 6-8 9 7-9 1 9 2. Get the checklist. Protect the food sales. And if you want to know how the Assistant Manager schedules these sweeps during a massive rush, listen to Episode 76 of Survive. I’m Mike Hernandez. Pass the test. I’ll see you on the floor. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
