Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to the public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 00:01:20.900 --> 00:01:26.860 As he lay awake, considering this, he fell into a dream and saw an angel standing beside him. 00:01:27.420 --> 00:01:35.080 Joseph, son of David, the angel said, don't hesitate to take Mary as your wife, for the child this season of time is not how do we get to God, but we celebrate that God came to us. 00:11:19.300 --> 00:11:23.520 Every other religion says this, here's how you get to God. 00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:25.800 Here's how you work to God. 00:11:26.120 --> 00:11:27.860 Here's how you earn your way to God. 00:11:28.480 --> 00:11:31.720 But Christianity says, no, no, no, no, no, no, that's not it at all. 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:37.840 Here's the story is that God comes to us. 00:11:39.180 --> 00:11:58.240 That God steps out of heaven and takes on flesh, and he's born of a virgin, and he walks on the earth, and he experiences pain and hurt and hunger and sickness. 00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:12.760 And rejection, and through it all lives a perfect life, and doesn't call us to go pay for our sins, but he says, I will pay for all of your sins. 00:12:13.500 --> 00:12:17.120 And he does so by the death of the cross. 00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:27.000 But it doesn't end there for the story that just as he came to us, he comes to us again through resurrection, the power of God. 00:12:28.500 --> 00:12:34.940 So that when our faith and hope and trust are put in Christ, the payment for our sins 00:12:55.820 In John chapter 3, in verse 16 and 17, Jesus talks about this, of what does it mean that God is with us. 00:12:56.160 --> 00:12:57.480 So look at these two verses. 00:12:57.960 --> 00:13:07.100 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 00:13:07.560 --> 00:13:16.220 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 00:13:16.900 --> 00:13:22.840 So Jesus gives this explanation of what it means that God is with us. sacrificed his Son. 00:14:11.660 --> 00:14:14.620 Jesus laid his life down. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:17.520 God gave his Son. 00:14:17.520 --> 00:14:25.060 The picture of his love for us is that he gave him, but also he sent his Son. 00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:28.080 God gave and God sent. 00:14:29.420 --> 00:14:33.600 Now this word, why gave, implies the sacrifice that is to be made. 00:14:34.200 --> 00:14:40.880 Sent, here in this passage, Jesus gives it, the definition is one sent with a mission. 00:14:41.380 --> 00:14:46.300 It's where we get the word apostle from when we read it in the New Testament. 00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:47.520 And this is very important. 00:14:48.440 --> 00:14:53.220 Oftentimes we think in the narrative of Christ, of who Jesus is, was that he came to die. struggles. 00:15:29.580 --> 00:15:35.520 But a life of complete obedience to the Father. 00:15:37.400 --> 00:15:49.580 So that when we say that God gave and that God sent, it's this, that Jesus was sent to pay the price we could not pay. 00:15:50.580 --> 00:15:56.500 But Jesus was also sent to live the life that we could not live. 00:15:57.740 --> 00:15:59.240 And that's the love of God. Sunday afternoon Braves baseball game and someone in right field holding up a poster board that said John 3.16. 00:16:37.940 --> 00:16:38.640 Y'all remember this? 00:16:39.280 --> 00:16:48.980 It feels like in my childhood, any time that you watched a sporting event, and if you grew up, for me, especially in the South, right, there was TBS. 00:16:49.460 --> 00:16:53.660 And everybody became a Braves fan because that's the only team you could watch, right? 00:16:53.780 --> 00:17:01.060 We didn't know that there were other teams until people from other places moved here and like, oh, no, no, no, no, you can watch them too, right? 00:17:01.120 --> 00:17:02.560 We watched the Braves. 00:17:02.600 --> 00:17:06.880 And it was bad watching Braves in the early 80s, but we watched the Braves anyway. 00:17:07.080 --> 00:17:12.180 And there was always somebody in right field holding up the sign John 3.16. 00:17:13.420 --> 00:17:17.040 And so a lot of people knew it, and that's the context. 00:17:17.820 --> 00:17:26.260 But what I want to do for you this morning and what's going to take our time, and I want to work through this quickly, is what led Jesus to say these two verses? --> 00:17:41.080 Is Jesus just walking alongside the road, and all of a sudden he goes, hey, by the way, let me tell you this. 00:17:41.380 --> 00:17:50.380 No, as for so many things that happen in the life of Christ, there's an interaction that takes place with Jesus and someone. 00:17:51.400 --> 00:18:00.100 And this is what we see if you look back in chapter 3, beginning in verse 1, Jesus has a conversation with a man named Nicodemus. 00:18:00.900 --> 00:18:03.200 And that's the story I want us to see this morning. 00:18:04.120 --> 00:18:05.180 Let's read verses 1 and 2. 00:18:06.340 --> 00:18:11.500 Now, there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 00:18:12.500 --> 00:18:25.100 And this man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. 00:18:25.100 --> 00:18:31.740 Now, this is a little bit different interaction if you're familiar with the Pharisees that Jesus typically has with Pharisees. 00:18:31.940 --> 00:18:34.200 So let's kind of talk about a little bit about what's happening here. 00:18:34.420 --> 00:18:38.500 So what does Scripture tell us, and what do we know from history as far as who is Nicodemus? 00:18:38.780 --> 00:18:40.580 So Nicodemus is a Pharisee. 00:18:40.960 --> 00:18:44.540 The Pharisees are the religious leaders of the day. 00:18:44.540 --> 00:18:48.360 They were varied in their power and their authority that they would have. 00:18:48.720 --> 00:18:54.620 And Pharisees, oftentimes, when we read through Scriptures, are the ones who are trying to get Jesus. 00:18:54.840 --> 00:18:56.100 They're trying to catch Jesus. 00:18:56.320 --> 00:19:00.940 They're the ones that are bringing the false allegations about Jesus, and this is typically what we see. 00:19:01.240 --> 00:19:05.360 And Nicodemus belongs to this group of Jewish leaders. 00:19:05.820 --> 00:19:12.520 Scripture also tells us that he's a ruler of the Jews, which calls us that he's a member of the Sanhedrin. 00:19:12.760 --> 00:19:15.480 Now, not all Pharisees were promoted to this. 00:19:15.700 --> 00:19:17.880 This is like the upper level. 00:19:18.020 --> 00:19:19.680 This is the highest of the high. 00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:22.040 And they were beyond religious leaders. 00:19:22.300 --> 00:19:27.360 They were religious leaders who carried with them a sense of political leadership. 00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:29.060 So kind of imagine it this way. 00:19:29.300 --> 00:19:29.420 All right. 00:19:29.520 --> 00:19:34.900 So imagine, like, I'm the pastor of this church, but I also become a U.S. senator. 00:19:35.140 --> 00:19:36.540 Now, bad idea, right? 00:19:36.900 --> 00:19:37.800 Bad idea. 00:19:38.960 --> 00:19:41.980 And that's not a passive-aggressive lean to where I'm going, all right? 00:19:43.060 --> 00:19:44.440 But let's just pretend. 00:19:45.060 --> 00:19:53.020 So this is what we found, that they were these religious leaders who kind of had this political influence in leadership as well. 00:19:53.940 --> 00:19:59.940 Because Nicodemus was a religious leader, because a Pharisee, because he was a part of the Sanhedrin, 00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:03.580 he would have been a skilled theologian, which means this. 00:20:03.760 --> 00:20:07.840 He would have known the Old Testament beyond the level of an expert. 00:20:09.700 --> 00:20:12.520 So much of it he would have had memorized. 00:20:14.240 --> 00:20:15.880 And he could have told you what it meant. 00:20:16.980 --> 00:20:19.700 You could have come to him and said, hey, let me ask you about this. 00:20:19.720 --> 00:20:22.000 And he would have had an answer to give you. 00:20:23.260 --> 00:20:26.700 And so he's a skilled theologian, could argue Scripture. 00:20:28.320 --> 00:20:35.740 But he was also, in all of these things, he, as well as the rest of the Pharisees and Sanhedrin, 00:20:35.980 --> 00:20:40.220 was a strict follower of all of the law that we find in the Old Testament. 00:20:40.360 --> 00:20:40.480 Right? 00:20:40.480 --> 00:20:42.200 Remember, the New Testament isn't there. 00:20:42.660 --> the Torah. 00:20:51.900 --> 00:20:53.920 And to be a Pharisee, to be a member of the Sanhedrin, 00:20:54.520 --> 00:21:00.040 you didn't have to think or believe that you were getting close to obeying all of these laws. 00:21:00.920 --> 00:21:01.080 Right? 00:21:01.760 --> 00:21:03.600 You had to believe that you were crushing them. 00:21:03.600 --> 00:21:06.920 Day in and day out. 00:21:07.980 --> 00:21:09.820 And so this man comes to Jesus. 00:21:10.040 --> 00:21:14.020 Now, usually with Pharisees, they've got some sketchy motives. 00:21:14.560 --> 00:21:15.540 So what are his motives? 00:21:15.940 --> 00:21:17.860 And this kind of gets debated from time to time. 00:21:17.960 --> 00:21:21.060 But I believe that Nicodemus had sincere motives for two reasons. 00:21:21.420 --> 00:21:22.900 Number one, he comes to Jesus at night. 00:21:23.900 --> 00:21:25.040 He comes to Jesus at night. 00:21:25.740 --> 00:21:32.620 And what I believe that points to is Nicodemus is in a curiosity. 00:21:33.820 --> 00:21:38.480 And he doesn't want to be an outcast from the group that he's a part of. 00:21:39.880 --> 00:21:42.680 He knows that he probably shouldn't go and do this. 00:21:43.760 --> 00:21:50.300 So instead of it being a middle of the day outside where people would come to Jesus or come to Nicodemus and say, 00:21:50.300 --> 00:21:52.140 Hey, what was that conversation all about? 00:21:52.420 --> 00:21:54.740 Nicodemus comes during the night to Jesus. 00:21:55.060 --> 00:21:58.120 And then from his own words, here's how he addresses Jesus. 00:21:58.440 --> 00:22:01.640 He calls Jesus a rabbi and a teacher. 00:22:02.280 --> 00:22:06.640 So the expert says, you're the teacher, you're the rabbi. 00:22:07.040 --> 00:22:11.120 He acknowledges that Jesus is from God. 00:22:11.880 --> 00:22:15.340 He acknowledges the signs of Jesus. 00:22:16.080 --> 00:22:25.040 And fourthly, in his greeting, he says that he acknowledges and that he sees that God is with Jesus. 00:22:25.420 --> 00:22:28.620 Now, he doesn't say that Jesus is God, which is what we know. 00:22:28.740 --> 00:22:31.700 But he says that I know that God is with you. 00:22:32.540 --> 00:22:41.020 Which is why I believe that he's genuinely curious about who Jesus is. 00:22:41.600 --> 00:22:42.740 Let's look at verses 3 through 8. 00:22:44.340 --> 00:22:46.120 So Jesus answered him, 00:22:47.320 --> 00:22:53.220 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 00:22:54.340 --> 00:22:55.480 Nicodemus said to him, 00:22:55.960 --> 00:22:57.980 How can a man be born when he is old? 00:22:58.520 --> 00:23:02.300 Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? 00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:03.880 And Jesus answered, 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:11.800 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:23:11.800 --> 00:23:18.480 That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that 00:24:10.400 And Jesus answered with something different than what Nicodemus was expecting, but Jesus is getting to the heart of Nicodemus. 00:24:11.840 --> 00:24:13.340 Second is this. 00:24:14.020 --> 00:24:22.580 He's an expert in Scripture, and what this rabbi Jesus is telling him is foreign. 00:24:22.580 --> 00:24:30.420 So he asked now a question, and I'm going to call it a sincerely sarcastic question. 00:24:30.500 --> 00:24:31.340 You ever ask one of those? 00:24:33.120 --> 00:24:36.860 He's sincere, but it has a tone of sarcasm. 00:24:37.980 --> 00:24:46.760 It's like, I'm confused, so let me phrase what you said in the crazy way that you said it, is what Nicodemus does. 00:24:47.160 --> 00:24:48.160 Look back at verse 4. 00:24:48.220 --> 00:24:55.880 He says, can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? 00:24:57.820 --> 00:24:59.360 Jesus, this doesn't make sense. 00:25:00.420 --> 00:25:01.660 I'm confused. 00:25:02.680 --> 00:25:03.860 Explain this to me. 00:25:05.100 --> 00:25:06.000 And so Jesus does. 00:25:07.640 --> 00:25:10.580 And Jesus says, here's what it means to be born again. 00:25:11.760 --> 00:25:13.760 Here's what it means to is what's there. 00:25:48.600 --> 00:25:50.380 And John has baptized Jesus. 00:25:50.600 --> 00:25:52.580 And so the call of baptism is there. 00:25:52.680 --> 00:25:59.560 And the call of baptism is marking those who are spiritually clean because they have received forgiveness. 00:26:01.020 --> 00:26:02.420 They've been washed. 00:26:02.420 --> 00:26:04.320 They've been made new. 00:26:04.760 --> act of God which you can't control. 00:28:04.180 --> 00:28:13.840 But you feel and you respond to as the spirit of God begins to work and as the spirit of God begins to draw and as the spirit of God asked Nicodemus. 00:29:41.700 --> 00:29:42.920 Are you born again? 00:29:44.080 --> 00:29:45.040 Are you born again? 00:29:46.040 --> 00:29:49.440 Well, look how Nicodemus reacts to Jesus in verse 9. 00:29:51.600 --> 00:29:55.080 Nicodemus said to him, how can these things be? 00:29:56.100 --> 00:30:03.520 And Jesus answered him, are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 00:30:04.380 --> 00:30:11.540 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen. 00:30:11.840 --> 00:30:14.900 But you do not receive our testimony. 00:30:15.680 --> 00:30:24.020 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 00:30:24.020 --> 00:30:27.000 So Nicodemus is still confused. the poetry. 00:31:06.380 --> 00:31:07.780 I know the history. 00:31:08.580 --> 00:31:09.840 I know the prophets. 00:31:10.540 --> 00:31:11.900 I know it, Jesus. 00:31:12.220 --> 00:31:13.220 I know it. 00:31:13.500 --> 00:31:14.400 I know it. 00:31:14.560 --> 00:31:17.960 But this doesn't register with this. 00:31:18.460 --> 00:31:19.760 And I want to say this. 00:31:22.120 --> 00:31:24.720 You can know the Bible and not know Jesus. 00:31:26.400 --> 00:31:28.940 You can know the Bible. 00:31:29.280 --> 00:31:32.780 You can have it memorized and not know Jesus. 00:31:33.560 --> 00:31:45.680 And so what Jesus says to Nicodemus is listen to me, believe me, stop listening to you, stop believing you. 00:31:46.240 --> 00:31:50.920 You, Nicodemus, you have to trust me. 00:31:51.980 --> 00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:20.240 And so in this culmination of Nicodemus, as he wrestles with his works, with Nicodemus, as he wrestles with his intelligence, with his understanding of Scripture. 00:32:21.680 --> 00:32:30.260 Jesus says in verse 13, no one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 00:32:30.260 --> 00:32:36.360 And Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness. 00:32:37.320 --> 00:32:47.480 So must the Son of Man be lifted up that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 00:32:49.480 --> 00:32:51.120 Here's what Jesus does in this himself. 00:33:07.880 --> 00:33:19.460 For Nicodemus and for us and for every other person, what Jesus is pointing to is there's no salvation that can be found outside of or at. 00:33:19.480 --> event found in Scripture in Numbers chapter 21. 00:34:19.720 --> 00:34:27.280 Now, when he said those words about Moses and the serpent, Nicodemus would have been like, uh-huh, uh-huh, I know exactly what you're talking about, right? 00:34:28.260 --> 00:34:28.660 Exactly. 00:34:29.800 --> 00:34:30.760 But he didn't. 00:34:31.280 --> 00:34:33.760 So here's what happens in Numbers chapter 21. had delivered his people from Egypt and God was providing for them. 00:34:42.940 --> 00:34:45.600 But they still complained about God and Moses. 00:34:46.180 --> 00:34:49.400 And so this was the rebellion that the people had against the Lord. 00:34:49.660 --> 00:34:56.680 They were rebelling against his provision and they were rebelling against the servant that God had sent to lead them. 00:35:06.960 --> 00:35:14.140 Like, you look at some of the ones that happened in Egypt and if you're like me and you're not really a snake guy, this one kind of gets you. 00:35:14.320 --> 00:35:14.820 You know what I mean? 00:35:15.220 --> 00:35:16.140 And this is what we see. 00:35:16.620 --> 00:35:17.760 And this is what God sends. 00:35:18.240 --> 00:35:19.700 And they would bite the people. 00:35:20.720 --> 00:35:22.120 And in that, many of them would die. 00:35:23.500 --> 00:35:31.280 And God's chastisement of them in this was not to punish them, but was to get them to Moses does. 00:35:52.660 --> 00:35:54.040 And then here's what God does. 00:35:54.340 --> 00:36:00.980 God doesn't remove the snakes, but instead tells Moses to make a bronze snake, put it on a pole. 00:36:01.580 --> 00:36:09.420 And if someone is bitten, when he looks up at the snake on the pole, that person will live. 00:36:10.060 --> 00:36:11.720 And this is what Moses does. 00:36:12.080 --> 00:36:12.820 Now, here's the thing. 00:36:13.680 --> 00:36:14.760 Some people do that. 00:36:15.900 --> 00:36:16.660 Some people don't. 00:36:17.900 --> 00:36:20.420 And the ones that do, they live. 00:36:20.900 --> 00:36:21.880 So look back at Jesus' words. 00:36:22.080 --> 00:36:48.560 But just as the snake was lifted up in the wilderness, so too Jesus is telling Nicodemus, the son of man will be lifted up as well, but onto a cross. 00:36:48.560 --> 00:37:01.740 And just as the snake on the pole would take away the sure-coming sting of death that they faced, 00:37:02.740 --> 00:37:07.460 so too Jesus would take away the poison of the sin. 00:37:08.600 --> 00:37:14.900 And whoever looks up, whoever believes in him, would have eternal life. 00:37:16.700 --> 00:37:27.360 And so in the wilderness to survive, you had to look up to the means that was sent by God. 00:37:28.820 --> 00:37:42.680 And Jesus says to Nicodemus, so too for eternal life you have to look up, not to a snake on a 00:39:39.600 Well, Nicodemus reappears two other times in scripture. 00:39:40.940 --> 00:39:48.480 Next time we see that we see an encounter with Nicodemus, he's functioning in his official capacity as a member of the Sanhedrin. 00:39:49.040 --> 00:39:50.960 And they're considering what to do with Jesus. 00:39:51.100 --> 00:39:52.420 This is found in John chapter 7. 00:39:53.700 --> 00:40:01.660 And some of the Pharisees and priests sent some to the temple guard to arrest Jesus, but they returned and they were unable to do it. 00:40:02.580 --> 00:40:07.260 And the guards are questioned by the Pharisees in authority of what happened. 00:40:07.260 --> 00:40:15.960 But Nicodemus presents an opinion that Jesus should not be dismissed or condemned until they've heard from him personally. 19. 00:41:20.040 --> 00:41:26.520 And what we find with Nicodemus, a person who by law is not to touch anything dead. 00:41:28.520 --> 00:41:32.580 What we see about Nicodemus is he's assisting.
