D EPISODE 73: THE GLASS CAGE (SAFETY & AWARENESS) You are standing in a glass box. It is 2:00 AM. It is dark outside, but inside, you are under fluorescent lights brighter than the sun. You are the fish in the fishbowl. A car pulls up. It parks in the shadows, away from the pump. The driver gets out. Hoodie up. Hands in pockets. You look down at your phone to check a text. When you look up, he is already at the counter. You froze. And because you froze, you lost control of the room. Tonight, we learn how to stop the threat before it walks through the door. Welcome back to C-Store Legends. I’m Mike Hernandez. Today we are talking about The Glass Cage. In the Dive phase, you think safety is about what you do during a robbery. Wrong. Safety is about what you do before the robbery happens. Criminals are like predators. They look for the weak gazelle. The weak gazelle is the clerk who is: 1. On their phone. 2. Hiding in the cooler. 3. Looking at the floor. If you look distracted, you look like a victim. The #1 deterrent to crime isn't a camera. It isn't a gun. It is Eye Contact. We call this Aggressive Hospitality. When that door chime rings, you don't just glance up. You lift your chin. You look them in the eye. You say, loud and clear: "Welcome in! How are you doing tonight?" You just sent a message: I see you. I can identify you. You are not anonymous here. A robber wants to be invisible. By greeting them, you take away their superpower. And once they are in the store, protect the cash. The safe is not a suggestion. It is a lifeline. If you have more than $50 in your drawer, you are a walking target. Drop the money. Drop it often. If a bad guy comes in and you have $20 in the register, he leaves angry. If you have $200, he comes back next week with his friends. Don't invite them back. "I want to take a second to talk to the person listening who feels like they are 'stuck' in this store. Maybe you think you missed your window. I want you to know something about me. I first attended college in the Spring of 1987. I didn't finish. Work and life always seemed to get in my way. For years, that haunted me. But in 2009, while I was working for Flying J in Joplin, Missouri, I decided to go back. I finally completed my degree in 2012. That’s right. It took me 25 years to earn a degree. I always tell people I was on the 'Lucas Plan'. It doesn't matter how long it takes. I worked my way up to District Manager, and then realized that I could help develop others no matter where or when they worked. Don't let this job be the end of your story. Let it be the start. If you want to know how to move up, listen to Survive. Learn the job above you. That is how you get unstuck." Alright, let’s secure the perimeter. Your job is not to be a hero. Your job is to be a Hard Target. Here is your Solo Quest for this week. "The 3-Second Greet." Every time that door chime rings, you have 3 seconds to make eye contact and speak. I don't care if you are mopping. I don't care if you are stocking the cooler. Stop. Look. Speak. "Welcome in!" Force them to acknowledge you. If they look away or pull their hood down, you know to watch them. I have a "Robbery Deterrent Checklist"—it’s a 5-point scan you can do from behind the counter to see if your store is safe or if you are sitting in a trap. Text the word SAFE to 956-897-9 1 9 2. That’s SAFE to 956-897-9 1 9 2. Get the list. Drop the cash. Watch the door. And if you think you are stressed about safety, listen to Episode 6 of Survive. Your Assistant Manager is the one who has to answer to the police if the lights go out. I’m Mike Hernandez. Head up. Eyes open. I’ll see you on the floor. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
