Pete Maldonado, a native of Newburg, New York and 1992 graduate of Loras, made history during his time as a member of the Duhawks' wrestling program. He posted a career record of 66-26 and became the program's first NCAA Division III national champion and sixth national champion overall in 1992 at 126 lbs. His career saw him develop from a sophomore with an 11-7 record to a dominant senior in which he went 32-2 en route to winning the conference and national championship. His only two losses in the 1992 season came against Division I top-ranked grapplers Terry Brands of the University of Iowa, now the Hawkeyes' esteemed associate head coach, and Mike Pasado of Marquette University.
