While there isn’t a smoking gun for today’s incident—yet—odds are whatever took down the websites for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, and several others is linked to the tension at the Ukrainian border. On Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security issued a memo warning critical US infrastructure operators of potential disruption. Cyber-attacks and espionage are already a regular part of global activity. But, with US pressure in the form of painful sanctions, it’s possible we could suffer some blowback from a bad actor. The Colonial Pipeline, the hack of JBS, a major meat supplier—and the Solar Winds incident all come to mind. A war 5000 miles away has plenty of potential to disrupt main street here.
