Building Performance (MBIE) overviews what the new building consent exemptions mean for the sector and examples of what does or doesn’t need a consent. From the 31st August 2020, there will be more work that can be done without needing a building consent. This makes it easier to get on with building projects without needing to go through local councils.

There are new exemptions that utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners (LBP) scheme, which recognises the competence of these building practitioners and allows them to have their own suite of exemptions. An LBP will be able to carry out or supervise design and construction for some single-storey detached buildings up to 30sqm, carports up to 40 sqm, ground floor awnings up to 30 sqm, ground floor verandas and porches up to 30 sqm and single-storey pole sheds and hay barns up to 110 sqm, without needing a building consent.
