On this special bonus episode of Conversation Piece, we launch our newest series Community in Conversation, focused on highlighting the people behind the scenes of the organizations who bring events like BUTTER and CHREECE to life every year.
In this episode, we head to the historic Stutz in downtown Indy for the fourth annual BUTTER FINE ART FAIR. Held on Labor Day Weekend, this multi-day event centers Black artists from across the state and the globe and has seen over 30,000 people walk through its exhibits and over $750,000 in art sold over the first three years. That continued in 2024: another $137,000 worth of art was sold this past weekend. The best part? 100% of the proceeds go back to the artists.
We got the chance to go behind the scenes to chat with volunteers, staff members, and artists about their thoughts on the impact of BUTTER, what it means to be part of this particular event, and how all of it effects the city we call home: Indianapolis (well, at least all of us who live here!).
