The Impactful Leadership Show

As your company grows from day one on, your responsibilities as a leader will change and you need to be ready for it and be able to recognize. Katherine Horrigan is the Founder & CEO of The Dance Academy of Virginia. Katherine is also a former professional dancer, mom, professor, and entrepreneur. Katherine shares the changing role of a leader, understanding your team, and communicating your vision.

Takeaways:
Your role as a leader and business owner will change over time. In the beginning, there is more of a focus on day-to-day tasks and managing the operations. Whereas as the company and team grow, the focus shifts to vision, long-term goals, and culture building.
It is your job to figure out where the company is going and why. Along with that, you must communicate your vision and your passion to your team and get them to buy in and see the bigger picture.
The approach to leadership for your team is the same, however, it is not the same for each person. As a leader, you need to target your message to each person. Each member of your team receives information differently and has unique needs.
When you take the time to listen, observe, and build awareness of each of the members of your team, you will understand them better as people and can therefore help them better to be the best they can be at their job.
Even if you hire someone with first-rate talent and expertise, if they don’t know and understand your vision, they won’t be able to maximize their impact on your business.
Listen carefully to the language that each member of your team uses and look for patterns in their communication and how they present. There’s nothing too small to not pay attention to because there is a lot of information in the details.
Although it can be difficult, try to slow down to give yourself time to learn and grow. Your self-development is an ongoing process, but you can make a real impact by regularly scheduling time to slow down, reflect, and learn.
