Feast or famine gets talked about mostly from the famine side, as if grinding constraint is the virtuous part of the cycle. Feast or famine gets talked about mostly from the famine side, as if grinding constraint is the virtuous part of the cycle. But the pattern as a whole, weeks of rigid self-denial followed by a period of blowing every boundary at once, is not an application of the compasses. It's a misuse of them. It looks like discipline from the outside, and it can even feel like discipline from the inside, right up until the feast arrives and everything comes undone.
True moderation isn't the average of deprivation and excess. It's the consistent, intentional drawing of boundaries that actually improves the quality of daily life over time. If your self-regulation isn't measurably making life better across the weeks and months, it's not regulation. It's a cycle of dysregulation with a virtuous mask on it. The compasses don't require suffering. They require honesty about what sustainable looks like.
The deeper skill here involves looking backward and forward simultaneously: understanding how you've operated in the past and anticipating what's coming, so that the boundaries you draw are ones you can actually hold across time rather than ones that inevitably collapse under pressure.
Moderation is not a compromise. It's the only boundary condition that's actually sustainable, and sustainability is the whole point of using the compasses at all.
