HR in Review

In this episode of the HR in Review show, we delve into the relationships HR pros have with group benefits brokers, ways leaders can get more from their investments, and how group benefits help to ensure a happy workforce.

Show Notes

Guest: Roger Thorpe

Bill Banham is joined on the show by Roger Thorpe, President at Toronto-based integrated benefits and wellness consulting company, Thorpe Benefits and Host of the Benefits and Wellness Superhero Podcast.

More About Roger

As a 25-year specialist in employee benefits consulting and the owner of Thorpe Benefits, Roger helps HR and Finance professionals measure the success of their benefits plan on factors that go way beyond rates and renewals.

Roger takes his business seriously because his name is on its door and he believes it is important to “own client relationships” directly, which is why he is actively involved in Thorpe Benefits’ day-to-day operation. He also believes that energy and effort are the differentiators in life and business. In addition to a love for employee benefits, he has a passion for the study of health and high performance. His ultimate test is whether he can put in a ten-hour day and still have energy left over. He is still – and will forever be – “in training“.

Questions For Roger Include:
  • What benefits trends are you talking about with your clients right now? What are clients struggling with and what are some of the solutions?
  • What kind of expectations do most HR people have in dealing with a group benefits broker or consultant? What services and products do they expect to get?
  • How often do HR Directors evaluate their benefits programs? If they wanted to – how might they do that to determine if it is as effective as it can be? Do you agree with this approach?
  • The term ROI is used a lot in terms of evaluating the benefits of a company’s group benefits plan. How do most people define this? Why do you define it differently?
  • If you could pass on one crucial lesson you have learned in your career - in one minute or less - what would be your top tip for HR professionals?
  • What is the single biggest change you think will happen in HR over the next 5-10 years?
