really going to focus in on, we're going to make a change. 00:07:03.420 --> 00:07:06.400 We're going to have a move that we're going to make this morning, is we're going to talk 00:07:06.400 --> 00:07:08.900 about faith as has been every single week. 00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:14.040 But this morning, the focus of our faith, and it's what we've said from week one, is we're 00:07:14.040 --> 00:07:19.760 not just talking about the faith of salvation, but we're talking about the faith that we live 00:07:19.760 --> 00:07:20.040 by. 00:07:20.040 --> 00:07:25.720 You see, it's not just enough that you and I need faith to get us saved, but you and I 00:07:25.720 --> 00:07:33.660 need faith on an every single day basis as we walk this world, as we live our lives in 00:07:33.660 --> 00:07:37.580 a posturing to glorify Him and to bring others to Him, right? 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:43.300 Like, that's the part within us of why God saves us and then leaves us. 00:07:43.780 --> 00:07:49.080 If God just wanted to save us so we would be with Him, right, then the day of our salvation, 00:07:49.280 --> 00:07:51.760 He'd take us home, but He doesn't. 00:07:52.400 --> 00:07:54.300 He saves us and He leaves us here. 00:07:54.660 --> 00:07:56.480 And He leaves us here with a mission. 00:07:56.640 --> 00:07:58.640 He leaves us here with a purpose. 00:07:58.900 --> 00:08:04.320 He leaves us here with a passion to live for Him, to display the goodness of the gospel, 00:08:04.320 --> 00:08:12.320 to share the life-saving transformation of the gospel with others so that they may know Him. 00:08:12.880 --> 00:08:17.920 And so faith isn't just what saves us, but faith is that by which we live by. 00:08:18.100 --> 00:08:20.660 And that's a struggle that's happened in the Galatian church. 00:08:20.820 --> 00:08:27.460 As not only they believe it's Christ that they are saved, but it's Christ plus to really, 00:08:27.740 --> 00:08:31.880 truly live their life in order to be a child of God. 00:08:32.560 --> 00:08:35.760 And so Paul's trying to chip away at this boulder. 00:08:36.060 --> 00:08:42.200 He's trying to break it down piece by piece by piece so they begin to truly understand 00:08:42.200 --> 00:08:45.560 what the fullness of Christ looks like in their life. 00:08:46.260 --> 00:08:49.720 And so let's continue on reading Galatians chapter 4 starting verse 21. 00:08:52.020 --> 00:09:15.880 Now this may be interpreted allegorically. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:18.060 These women are two covenants. 00:09:18.400 --> 00:09:22.640 One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery, and she is Hagar. 00:09:23.180 --> 00:09:28.660 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and she corresponds to the present Jerusalem. 00:09:29.240 --> 00:09:33.980 For she is in slavery with her children, living under the law. 00:09:34.380 --> 00:09:35.120 Verse 26. 00:09:35.680 --> 00:09:39.780 But Jerusalem above is free. 00:09:40.540 --> 00:09:42.520 She is our mother, for it is written, 00:09:43.140 --> 00:09:45.740 Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear. 00:09:45.740 --> 00:09:50.220 Break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor. 00:09:50.580 --> 00:09:57.220 For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband. 00:09:57.880 --> 00:09:59.100 Continue on verse 28. 00:09:59.880 --> 00:10:03.480 Now you, brothers like Isaac, are children of promise. 00:10:04.160 --> 00:10:10.020 But just at this time, at that time, he who was born according to the flesh, 00:10:10.400 --> 00:10:15.780 persecuted him who was born according to the spirit, so also it is now. 00:10:16.060 --> 00:10:17.660 But what does scripture say? 00:10:18.340 --> 00:10:20.540 Cast out the slave woman and her son. 00:10:20.540 --> 00:10:25.640 For the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman. 00:10:26.340 --> 00:10:32.480 So brothers, we are not children of the slave, but of the free woman. 00:10:33.280 --> 00:10:37.040 So in this passage of scripture, Paul is going to tell us a story. 00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:39.740 But he begins with a question. 00:10:40.460 --> 00:10:41.940 And his question is important. 00:10:42.540 --> 00:10:43.340 He looks and says, 00:10:43.340 --> 00:10:48.780 As you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 00:10:49.200 --> 00:10:53.840 And what we have to understand for you and I is our relationship with the law. 00:10:54.040 --> 00:10:55.820 It's what I talked about several weeks ago. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.740 And what we begin to understand that obedience to the law, 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:02.400 that obedience to God's standard is good. 00:11:02.580 --> 00:11:05.860 That what the law does is the law shows sin in our life. 00:11:06.020 --> 00:11:07.620 It shows where we miss the mark. 00:11:07.620 --> 00:11:09.120 It shows where we've wandered away. 00:11:09.380 --> 00:11:13.040 That the law, when we were lost, showed us our desperate need for our Savior. 00:11:13.340 --> 00:11:19.020 So we look at the law, we see where we are, and we find in the law the ability. 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:22.480 We find in the law the calling of repentance. 00:11:23.020 --> 00:11:25.480 And so obedience to the law is good. 00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:29.480 And so Paul's not trying to break them away from obedience. 00:11:29.480 --> 00:11:35.580 But what he is trying to bring them away from is relying on the law for their standard. 00:11:36.180 --> 00:11:41.160 That in relying on the law for their standard with God is not good. 00:11:41.300 --> 00:11:44.900 So it wasn't just enough to be saved by Christ. 00:11:45.400 --> 00:11:52.500 But for them it was saved by Christ and then proving your worth through the things that you do. 00:11:53.060 --> 00:11:59.980 And he's trying to remove them from that, that Jesus is enough and that Jesus is sufficient. 00:12:00.640 --> 00:12:04.120 And so what Paul's going to do to explain this to them, 00:12:04.120 --> 00:12:09.240 it is now that you were saved, here is what a life of faith looks like. 00:12:09.600 --> 00:12:15.320 And he points back to Abraham, just as he had done in chapter 3. 00:12:15.920 --> 00:12:20.240 You see, in chapter 3, Abraham had now been the standard of faith. 00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:22.080 Faith like Abraham. 00:12:22.780 --> 00:12:25.420 But now there's going to be a different example. 00:12:26.120 --> 00:12:32.500 A negative piece that will come through in Abraham's life to serve what Paul needs 00:12:32.500 --> 00:12:37.580 as we begin to walk this world in the faith that God has called us to. 00:12:38.220 --> 00:12:40.460 You see, Abraham had two sons. 00:12:41.420 --> 00:12:47.200 Ishmael, whose mother was Hagar, and Isaac, whose mother was Sarah. 00:12:47.860 --> 00:12:54.600 So what you see here is you have two sons, you have two mothers, and you have one dad. 00:12:54.600 --> 00:13:01.560 Now let's just say, this is a story filled with catastrophe. 00:13:02.260 --> 00:13:05.720 This is a story that is going to blow up, right? 00:13:05.860 --> 00:13:09.040 Like, you can't look at this and think, oh, this ends well, right? 00:13:09.380 --> 00:13:09.880 No. 00:13:10.400 --> 00:13:12.640 No, it's not what's going to happen. 00:13:12.640 --> 00:13:23.960 But both of these sons and both of these women came to Abraham in drastically different circumstances. 00:13:24.980 --> 00:13:29.200 One would come to Abraham through his logic and through his ability. 00:13:29.800 --> 00:13:37.760 And one would come to Abraham through his faith, through his obedience of what God had set in place. 00:13:37.760 --> 00:13:44.440 You see, because before Abraham had any sons, God promised Abraham not only a land, 00:13:44.760 --> 00:13:52.060 but God promised Abraham that he would provide an heir to him in Genesis 12 and in Genesis 15. 00:13:52.600 --> 00:13:57.660 And in order for it to be an heir, it must be a son. 00:13:58.360 --> 00:14:00.920 And so this is the promise that God gives. 00:14:01.480 --> 00:14:06.100 But there's multiple problems with this promise in Abraham's perspective. 00:14:06.920 --> 00:14:08.020 Abraham's old. 00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:14.100 And just as Abraham is old, his wife is also old. 00:14:14.580 --> 00:14:17.820 And the Bible tells us that she was barren. 00:14:18.100 --> 00:14:20.560 She was unable to get pregnant. 00:14:21.220 --> 00:14:27.420 And so God comes to an old Abraham who thinks our child years have passed us. 00:14:27.880 --> 00:14:35.100 God comes to Abraham who is married to a woman that he loves who's been incapable of giving him a child. 00:14:35.100 --> 00:14:41.980 And he says to him, I promise you, I promise you not only a land, but I promise you an heir. 00:14:42.660 --> 00:14:45.480 An heir from you. 00:14:46.620 --> 00:14:49.120 An heir from Sarah. 00:14:50.080 --> 00:14:56.340 And that your descendants, what scripture says, will be more numerous than the stars. 00:14:56.600 --> 00:15:02.660 And so Abraham and Sarah begin this journey of faith with God. 00:15:03.020 --> 00:15:10.180 And after years of living where God called them to, after years of trusting in the promise of what God had given them, 00:15:10.380 --> 00:15:17.620 after years of believing all that God had told them, all that God had promised them, 00:15:18.160 --> 00:15:21.840 still, still, still God had not provided. 00:15:22.780 --> 00:15:24.860 Now notice we don't say God had failed. 00:15:25.720 --> 00:15:28.460 But God had not provided. like in my life I've been here before. 00:15:41.660 --> 00:15:44.280 Think about you and your journey of life. 00:15:45.080 --> 00:15:47.200 You and where you are in your marriage. 00:15:47.360 --> in your career. 00:15:55.400 --> 00:15:59.000 You and where you are in the dynamic that you have with your parents. 00:15:59.340 --> 00:16:02.820 You and where you are in any scenario of life. 00:16:02.820 --> 00:16:09.120 And what you find is that through your perspective, you've been doing everything the right way. 00:16:09.620 --> 00:16:13.740 You've been trying to honor God in every aspect of what is happening. 00:16:13.960 --> 00:16:19.800 But yet what is unfolding before you is not what you feel you deserve. 00:16:20.380 --> 00:16:23.180 Is not what you feel like God would follow through in. 00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:29.560 And I don't know about you, but I've been through and sometimes find myself in those seasons of life. 00:16:29.800 --> 00:16:32.140 It's a frustrating road to be on. 00:16:32.140 --> 00:16:35.120 It's a frustrating place to find yourself. 00:16:35.420 --> 00:16:41.700 And I don't know about you, but I can't imagine being Abraham and Sarah in this their journey of faith. 00:17:00.660 --> 00:17:02.520 Number one, they listened to God. 00:17:03.220 --> 00:17:04.240 They listened to him. 00:17:05.280 --> 00:17:08.120 There's never any doubt in their mind what God had said. 00:17:09.100 --> 00:17:11.620 And I think that's an important part that we oftentimes miss. 00:17:12.040 --> 00:17:16.260 How many times is God speaking to us, but we're not listening to him? 00:17:16.740 --> 00:17:22.380 But they find in this from the very beginning, there was no doubt in what God had said. 00:17:22.380 --> 00:17:30.520 And so their journey of faith with the Lord was found before they did anything in their listening to God. 00:17:30.720 --> 00:17:31.780 So they listened to him. 00:17:32.240 --> 00:17:35.200 In their journey in faith, they they believed, what they trusted, that God was going to do. 00:18:57.480 --> 00:19:06.200 And so what you begin to see is they begin to, piece by piece, abandon their faith. 00:19:06.940 -->
