EPISODE 72: THE COLD WAR (THE COOLER) Your night shift clerk walks out of the cooler, rubbing their hands. 'All done, boss. It's fully stocked.' They clock out. You walk in ten minutes later to grab a Red Bull... and there is nothing behind the front row. It was a lie. Now you are stuck stocking the vault while running the register because you didn't check their work. If you are constantly finishing the job your team said they finished, you are in the Survive phase. We need to stop the 'Ghost Stocking.' Welcome to the verification—and welcome to C-Store Legends. The Cooler is the biggest hiding spot in the store. For a clerk, it’s a place to check Instagram away from the cameras. For you, the Assistant Manager, it is the place where labor dollars go to die. The biggest enemy you face in the Cold War isn't the temperature; it's Ghost Stocking. Ghost Stocking is when an employee pulls one bottle to the front to make it look full, but leaves the six slots behind it empty. It passes the "glance test," but it fails the "sales test." As soon as the rush hits, that row is dead. Here is the hard truth: You get what you inspect, not what you expect. If you ask your clerk, "Did you stock the water?" they will always say "Yes." Stop asking. Start verifying. You need to implement the "Push-Back Audit." Don't just look at the shelf. Walk in, pick a "Power Row" (like the 20oz Sodas), and physically push the front bottle back. If your hand goes back a foot into empty air, your clerk lied to you. You cannot manage the cooler from the register. If you want to escape the 'Survive' phase, you have to make the cooler check part of the shift change. Do not release the outgoing shift until you have done the Push-Back Audit. If it's ghost-stocked, they don't leave until it's real-stocked. Set that standard once, and they will stop testing you. But before we audit the inventory, let's check in on a man who is racing against time to protect his own inventory. Johnny stood in the candlelight of a crumbling church. His Padre handed him a map. An ancient parchment with a faded 'X'. And then, the warning dropped like an anchor... 'The ships—La Muerte and La Sancha—are waiting at El Puerto. But los enemigos are coming. You have to act rápido.' Two ships. One night. A legacy on the line. Johnny didn't hesitate. He grabbed the map, he grabbed the mezcal, and he ran toward his destiny. Johnny had to act fast to save his ships. You have to act fast to get your gear before the launch. The Johnny Mecuerdo store is almost open. We are talking slate coasters that can survive a bar fight and bottle openers heavy enough to anchor a galleon. Don't wait for the enemy to take your prize. Go to JohnnyMecuerdo.com. Sign up for the alert. Or find us on Facebook. Act rápido. The ships are waiting. Recuerda el legado. (Remember the legacy). Alright, let’s warm up. Your job is not to stock the cooler alone. Your job is to make sure the team actually did it. Here is your Solo Quest for this week. Perform the "Push-Back Audit." At shift change, walk the cooler. Pick 3 random doors. Push the product back. If you find air, call the clerk back in. "This isn't full. Fill it." It will be awkward the first time. It will be automatic the second time. To unlock the Level 4 Audit Checklist, text the code word COLD to 956-897-9192. And here is your Team Quest. This is for your vendors. The next time the soda rep leaves, play "Spot the Out." Vendors love to hide empty rows by spreading out the other flavors. If you find a hole they tried to hide, make them go back to the truck. Take back your shelf space. Mike: The cold is uncomfortable. Being lied to is worse. Verify the stock. Kill the ghosts. I’m Mike Hernandez. Stop doing their job. Start managing the result. I’ll see you in the vault. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
