Jesus Christ. 00:02:08.340 --> 00:02:12.140 Well, we're going to start reading this morning, Galatians chapter 2. 00:02:12.320 --> 00:02:16.880 We're going to read starting in verse 11 and go through verse 21. 00:02:17.740 --> 00:02:18.880 God's Word says this, 00:02:19.580 --> 00:02:24.220 But when Cephas, and make a note that when it says this name, this is Peter, 00:02:25.020 --> 00:02:27.980 came to Antioch, Paul writes and he says, 00:02:27.980 --> 00:02:32.080 I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 00:02:33.020 --> 00:02:38.060 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles. 00:02:38.820 --> 00:02:45.420 But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:50.320 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, 00:02:50.860 --> 00:02:54.740 so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 00:02:55.020 --> 00:03:00.000 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, 00:03:00.360 --> 00:03:02.880 I said to Cephas, again reminding you guys, this is Peter, 00:03:03.180 --> 00:03:10.980 Before them all, if you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, 00:03:11.380 --> 00:03:14.900 how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews? 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:20.780 This is a key argument that we've been talking about since the beginning of studying and understanding Galatians. 00:03:20.780 --> 00:03:26.520 All right, it's how can you impose something that's not the gospel on those converting, 00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:29.020 is what Paul is saying. 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:31.040 Verse 15, he says, 00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:35.460 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, 00:03:35.980 --> 00:03:41.000 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law, 00:03:41.140 --> 00:03:43.520 but through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:03:44.460 --> 00:03:52.700 So we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ, 00:03:52.840 --> 00:03:54.460 and not by works of the law. 00:03:54.460 --> 00:03:56.620 This is important, underline this in your Bible, 00:03:56.720 --> 00:04:02.560 because by the works of the law, no one will be justified. 00:04:03.660 --> 00:04:05.160 Continue on in verse 17, 00:04:05.300 --> 00:04:08.620 But if in our endeavor to this, 00:04:58.320 --> 00:05:01.320 we're going to wrap up this particular passage of Scripture 00:05:01.320 --> 00:05:03.860 and get the second half of what's going on. 00:05:03.960 --> 00:05:07.220 As Paul is continuing on and concluding the section 00:05:07.220 --> 00:05:11.580 as he's sharing his story of what's going on in his life. 00:05:11.980 --> 00:05:15.380 And this is the third segment that we've kind of seen in this 00:05:15.380 --> 00:05:16.460 as Paul shares. 00:05:16.700 --> 00:05:18.880 If you go all the way back to a couple weeks ago, 00:05:18.960 --> 00:05:22.300 it was the second week in our study of Galatians, 00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:23.940 we see the first section 00:05:23.940 --> 00:05:27.100 where Paul talks about his salvation, 00:05:27.640 --> 00:05:29.520 his salvation experience, 00:05:29.620 --> 00:05:31.040 and an important part for him 00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:34.660 that he focuses in on of what God does in that. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:36.860 That this gospel that he received 00:05:36.860 --> 00:05:38.560 was not the gospel of man. 00:05:38.980 --> 00:05:41.500 That it didn't come from one man to another, 00:05:41.660 --> 00:05:44.800 but that God revealed it to him. 00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:48.580 And it's the supernatural aspect of the gospel 00:05:48.580 --> 00:05:50.600 of what Paul is implanting, 00:05:50.740 --> 00:05:53.580 that for the Jew and for the Gentile, 00:05:54.380 --> 00:05:56.800 for every person who has ever lived, 00:05:57.400 --> 00:05:59.040 there is one gospel, 00:05:59.580 --> 00:06:04.660 and it's important that this gospel comes from God. 00:06:05.160 --> 00:06:08.640 It's the establishment of what he lays down before them. 00:06:09.140 --> 00:06:10.540 And then he jumps in scripture, 00:06:10.680 --> 00:06:13.600 tells us 14 years later in his story, 00:06:13.760 --> 00:06:16.400 and he begins to talk about the Jerusalem council. 00:06:16.900 --> 00:06:18.360 And at the Jerusalem council, 00:06:18.360 --> 00:06:19.260 it's determined, 00:06:19.640 --> 00:06:21.200 this man named Titus, 00:06:21.760 --> 00:06:23.660 that even though he is a Gentile, 00:06:24.140 --> 00:06:26.700 that he is a full believer of Christ 00:06:26.700 --> 00:06:29.800 with nothing else added to that 00:06:29.800 --> 00:06:31.900 for him required to do, 00:06:32.060 --> 00:06:33.920 that he's a full believer of Christ, 00:06:34.060 --> 00:06:36.240 even though he does not follow 00:06:36.240 --> 00:06:38.960 all of the customary Jewish laws 00:06:38.960 --> 00:06:41.700 or traditions that are there living in the culture. 00:06:42.280 --> 00:06:44.360 That now we see the establishment 00:06:44.360 --> 00:06:47.740 and the confirmation of what Paul knew 00:06:47.740 --> 00:06:49.900 as God imparted the gospel to him, 00:06:50.100 --> 00:06:51.960 as God called him to the Gentiles, 00:06:52.080 --> 00:06:55.760 that it is one unified gospel 00:06:55.760 --> 00:06:57.240 for the Jew, 00:06:57.880 --> 00:06:58.860 for the Gentile, 00:06:59.240 --> 00:07:00.220 for everyone, 00:07:00.740 --> 00:07:01.980 for every nation, 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:03.140 for every tribe, 00:07:03.220 --> 00:07:03.880 every tongue. 00:07:04.260 --> 00:07:06.860 It's the foundation of the hope that we have 00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:08.420 that we're called to share. 00:07:08.680 --> 00:07:11.620 It's the reminder that story. 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:26.400 And as we see, 00:07:26.520 --> 00:07:30.260 it's the culmination of what Paul is drawing together 00:07:30.260 --> 00:07:33.060 as he explains that it is the gospel 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:34.540 who saved Titus. 00:07:34.860 --> 00:07:37.220 It is the gospel who would save Peter. 00:07:37.520 --> 00:07:39.540 It's the gospel who would save Paul. 00:07:39.640 --> 00:07:41.140 It's the gospel who would save you. 00:07:41.140 --> 00:07:43.180 It's the gospel who would save me. 00:07:43.560 --> 00:07:45.680 But that even after salvation, here in the third section 00:08:08.960 --> 00:08:10.520 of what we read this morning 00:08:10.520 --> 00:08:12.700 is Paul addresses an issue 00:08:12.700 --> 00:08:13.980 that he had with Peter. 00:08:14.680 --> 00:08:15.520 Now before, 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:17.360 back in the Jerusalem council, 00:08:17.520 --> 00:08:18.280 Peter was there. 00:08:19.020 --> 00:08:21.480 And he and Peter were unified 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:23.700 concerning Titus and the gospel. 00:08:24.280 --> 00:08:26.300 But now they're no longer in Jerusalem. 00:08:26.940 --> 00:08:28.280 They're in Antioch, 00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:31.060 a largely Gentile city. 00:08:31.320 --> 00:08:34.500 And Paul stands in opposition to Peter. 00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:36.740 He rebukes him. 00:08:36.900 --> 00:08:38.260 He calls him out. 00:08:38.400 --> 00:08:40.500 He challenges him. 00:08:40.940 --> 00:08:42.800 So what in the world was going on? 00:08:43.680 --> 00:08:45.240 You see, to simplify it, 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.260 Peter had changed his eating habits. 00:08:49.220 --> 00:08:51.560 Peter had changed his social status 00:08:51.560 --> 00:08:52.880 when he would eat, 00:08:53.320 --> 00:08:56.020 before he would eat with the Gentiles. 00:08:56.160 --> 00:08:59.400 But now he has stopped his eating with them 00:08:59.400 --> 00:09:00.880 and in doing so, 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:04.200 stopped his fellowship with the Gentiles. 00:09:04.700 --> 00:09:07.160 You see, there begins to now be a break 00:09:07.160 --> 00:09:09.440 in what was fought for to be unified. 00:09:10.020 --> 00:09:12.660 Not only is the gospel unified in message, 00:09:12.660 --> 00:09:14.080 but it's always important 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:16.360 that the gospel is also unified 00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:39.660 --> 00:09:41.960 the leader of the core of what was there, 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:43.480 being willing to charge 00:09:43.480 --> 00:09:44.840 a Roman centurion 00:09:44.840 --> 00:09:46.940 with a knife to set Jesus free, 00:09:46.940 --> 00:09:48.140 why would Peter, 00:09:48.300 --> 00:09:49.620 who would write scripture, 00:09:49.980 --> 00:09:50.760 why would Peter, 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:53.160 who would be such a foundational leader 00:09:53.160 --> 00:09:53.800 in the church, 00:09:54.020 --> 00:09:57.000 why would he break away from this? 00:09:58.180 --> 00:10:00.160 Why would he head down this path? 00:10:00.760 --> 00:10:02.160 It's because of the sin 00:10:02.160 --> 00:10:03.860 that was in his life. 00:10:04.580 --> 00:10:05.540 You see, let me explain to you 00:10:05.540 --> 00:10:06.260 Old Testament, 00:10:06.440 --> 00:10:07.760 what we're going to call clean laws. 00:10:09.480 --> 00:10:11.020 The Old Testament clean laws 00:10:11.020 --> 00:10:12.340 found in Leviticus 00:10:12.340 --> 00:10:13.780 were a series of regulations 00:10:13.780 --> 00:10:15.060 for worshipers to follow. 00:10:15.340 --> 00:10:18.000 And God had put them in place 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.320 for them to be ceremonial clean 00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:21.600 and acceptable 00:10:21.600 --> 00:10:23.900 in the presence of God for worship. 00:10:24.340 --> 00:10:25.700 And so a handful of them were, 00:10:25.820 --> 00:10:28.360 they were required to eat certain foods 00:10:28.360 --> 00:10:30.040 and not eat certain foods 00:10:30.040 --> 00:10:31.000 because the certain foods 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:31.780 they were not eat 00:10:31.780 --> 00:10:33.340 were deemed to be unclean. 00:10:33.720 --> 00:10:35.040 They were not allowed 00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:10.940 in order to enter 00:11:10.940 --> 00:11:13.260 into the presence of God. 00:11:13.980 --> 00:11:15.100 It's a beautiful picture 00:11:15.100 --> 00:11:16.280 of what would take place 00:11:16.280 --> 00:11:17.700 of the work of Christ 00:11:17.700 --> 00:11:19.840 to allow you and I, 00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:20.580 sinners, 00:11:20.740 --> 00:11:22.120 to be brought into 00:11:22.120 --> 00:11:23.720 a right relationship 00:11:23.720 --> 00:11:24.840 with the Holy God. 00:11:25.080 --> 00:11:25.920 What we would see 00:11:25.920 --> 00:11:26.620 in the 00:12:01.120 And then in a wonderful part 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:03.180 where Peter understands this, 00:12:03.680 --> 00:12:04.840 he meets a Gentile 00:12:04.840 --> 00:12:06.020 named Cornelius
