We tried Sub Zero — Leafly's hot 2026 hybrid (Super Boof x Oreoz) — and ended up eating cold spaghetti from a colander. Plus: SF Mayor Daniel Lurie just signed cannabis cafés into law.
This week we tried Sub Zero — Leafly's breakout hybrid of 2026 — and lived to tell the tale (barely). Then we break down San Francisco's brand-new cannabis café ordinance, signed into law July 23rd.
Daisy: —and that is HOW I ended up eating cold spaghetti out of a colander at three in the morning, Astoria. Standing up. Over the sink. Like a raccoon with a lease.
Astoria: I have SO many questions and I don't want the answer to any of them.
Daisy: Ask. Ask me anything.
Astoria: Why a colander.
Daisy: Because every other dish was dirty and I had, in that moment, the executive function of a damp sponge.
Astoria: Okay so this is a Sub Zero story, isn't it.
Daisy: This is ENTIRELY a Sub Zero story.
Astoria: I knew it. The second you walked in with that little smug face I was like, she smoked the weird strain again.
Daisy: It's not weird! Leafly literally put it in their hot strains of 2026 roundup. It's, like, an official hot strain.
Astoria: Official hot strain. Cool. Cool cool cool. That still doesn't explain the colander.
Daisy: Okay so, context. Sub Zero. Hybrid. It's Super Boof crossed with Oreoz—
Astoria: I'm sorry, Super WHAT.
Daisy: Super Boof.
Astoria: Daisy.
Daisy: I did not name it!
Astoria: Super Boof. Crossed with a cookie.
Daisy: Crossed with Oreoz, which yes, is a cookie. So the parents of this strain are "Super Boof" and "Cookie."
Astoria: This reads like a Cheesecake Factory menu.
Daisy: That is EXACTLY what I said. That is verbatim what I said in my head when I bought it. I was like, is this weed or is this a dessert with fourteen adjectives.
Astoria: "Our new Super Boof Oreoz Sub Zero Sundae, drizzled with—"
Daisy: Stop. Stop, I'll die.
Astoria: Okay so what does it actually, like... do. Besides colander crimes.
Daisy: Leafly's words, not mine — warm, relaxing high. They say it's ideal for cozy indoor use in cold weather.
Astoria: In cold weather.
Daisy: In cold weather.
Astoria: The strain called SUB ZERO.
Daisy: The strain called Sub Zero.
Astoria: For staying warm.
Daisy: For staying warm indoors.
Astoria: The branding department took the day off.
Daisy: The branding department took a personal week. The branding department is at a silent retreat in Ojai.
Astoria: "We're calling it Sub Zero." "Great, what's it for?" "Getting toasty by the fire." "...perfect, ship it."
Daisy: Ship it! Ship it immediately!
Astoria: Okay but the flavor. What does it taste like. Give me the tasting notes.
Daisy: Okay so Leafly says heavy diesel funk with minty undertones... and a slice of sharp citrus.
Astoria: A SLICE of sharp citrus.
Daisy: A slice.
Astoria: So a gas station, a tin of Altoids, and half a lemon.
Daisy: You just described my ex.
Astoria: Oh my god.
Daisy: I'm serious. Diesel funk, minty undertones, sharp citrus. That's Kyle. That's a Kyle.
Astoria: That IS a Kyle. Every Kyle.
Daisy: Every Kyle since the beginning of time.
Astoria: Okay so the colander. Bring me back to the colander.
Daisy: Right, right. So I had exactly two puffs. TWO. Because I am, allegedly, a professional.
Astoria: Allegedly.
Daisy: Allegedly a professional. And I sat down on my couch to watch, I want to say, a documentary. About bees? Something wholesome.
Astoria: Sure.
Daisy: And the next thing I remember with any clarity is the METAL of the colander against my bottom lip.
Astoria: There's just a gap.
Daisy: There's a full gap. There's like a ninety-minute window where I have no idea what my body was doing.
Astoria: Your body was boiling pasta, Daisy. That's what your body was doing.
Daisy: My body was apparently boiling pasta, straining pasta, deciding a bowl was a bridge too far, and just... going for it.
Astoria: Warm and relaxing.
Daisy: Warm and relaxing! Leafly was RIGHT.
Astoria: Leafly delivered.
Daisy: Leafly delivered on the promise. I was warm. I was relaxed. I was standing in my kitchen eating starch with my hands.
Astoria: Okay so is that a recommend or an anti-recommend.
Daisy: Oh no, that's a full recommend.
Astoria: Of course it is.
Daisy: If you can find it, if your dispensary has it or something in that Super Boof family — try it. On a night you have nowhere to be. And maybe... pre-plate your snacks.
Astoria: Pre-plate your snacks. That's actually the takeaway. Write that down.
Daisy: Pre-plate. Your. Snacks.
Astoria: Okay, speaking of eating in weird places—
Daisy: Segue!
Astoria: Did you see San Francisco actually did the thing?
Daisy: The café thing?!
Astoria: The café thing.
Daisy: Astoria. I have been WAITING for you to bring this up.
Astoria: Mayor signed it on the twenty-third. Like, three days ago.
Daisy: Daniel Lurie. Signed the ordinance. Cannabis cafés are legal in San Francisco.
Astoria: Board of Supervisors voted seven to four.
Daisy: Wait, four people voted no?
Astoria: Four people voted no.
Daisy: In San Francisco?
Astoria: In San Francisco.
Daisy: What does that city have to DO to seem edgy anymore.
Astoria: Right?! Four supervisors looked at "legal weed lounge with a jazz trio" and went, absolutely not.
Daisy: "Not in my city." Your city is San Francisco!
Astoria: Your city invented this vibe.
Daisy: Your city IS this vibe.
Astoria: Okay so, effective date. Midnight, August 23rd.
Daisy: A month from... wait, when's that. Like a month from now, basically.
Astoria: About a month.
Daisy: Okay so I have a month to book a flight.
Astoria: Slow down. Slow down. You have a month until the ordinance is in effect. That does not mean cafés open on August 23rd.
Daisy: What.
Astoria: The Office of Cannabis still has to process permits. And do inspections.
Daisy: Oh no.
Astoria: So the "grand opening" of SF café culture might be, realistically, whenever the paperwork clears.
Daisy: Which in San Francisco is—
Astoria: Which in San Francisco is a spiritual concept, not a timeframe.
Daisy: It's vibes. It's paperwork vibes.
Astoria: It's very on brand.
Daisy: Okay but tell me about the rules. Because I heard the rules and I need you to confirm.
Astoria: On-site consumption only. Nothing leaves the building.
Daisy: Okay.
Astoria: You can have food. Non-cannabis food.
Daisy: Sure.
Astoria: Non-alcoholic beverages.
Daisy: Right.
Astoria: And live entertainment.
Daisy: And here's the kicker.
Astoria: No alcohol. No tobacco.
Daisy: No alcohol, no tobacco, yes live entertainment.
Astoria: Yes live entertainment.
Daisy: Astoria. Astoria. That is the world's mellowest open-mic night.
Astoria: Oh no.
Daisy: Picture it. Picture it with me. There's a jazz trio. There's a plate of nachos. There is a room full of people who cannot heckle because nobody has the energy.
Astoria: Nobody has the energy to heckle.
Daisy: The comic bombs and everyone just goes, "yeah... yeah, man."
Astoria: "That was... that was something."
Daisy: "I felt that."
Astoria: "I felt that in my chest."
Daisy: "You're doing great, keep going."
Astoria: This is the nicest comedy room in America.
Daisy: This is the nicest room, PERIOD. This is the room I want to die in.
Astoria: Great goal, Daisy.
Daisy: Thank you. I have goals.
Astoria: Okay but real talk — I think the food-and-live-music model is actually kind of smart?
Daisy: Say more.
Astoria: Like, a bar sells you alcohol and the alcohol is the point. If you take alcohol and tobacco off the table, the cannabis is the LUBRICANT, but the point is the hang. It's the music. It's the food. It's the people.
Daisy: Okay that's actually... yeah.
Astoria: You're there to be there.
Daisy: You're there to be there. That's actually a really nice reframe.
Astoria: I have moments.
Daisy: You do have moments! Between the eye-rolls.
Astoria: Between the eye-rolls, I have moments.
Daisy: Okay but — is this a California law thing or an SF thing?
Astoria: It's a California thing that SF opted into. There's a state law, AB 1775, that lets cities do this if they want.
Daisy: Okay so other cities could too.
Astoria: Other cities could too. SF is just the first Bay Area city to actually pull the trigger.
Daisy: First in the Bay Area. Not first in the state.
Astoria: First in the Bay Area.
Daisy: Okay. Good. I like precise facts, Astoria. Thank you for being precise.
Astoria: You're so welcome.
Daisy: Here's what kills me though. Here's what kills me.
Astoria: Hit me.
Daisy: While San Francisco is over here inventing the world's mellowest supper club... do you know what Illinois is doing?
Astoria: What is Illinois doing.
Daisy: Illinois added cannabis drive-throughs. And two a.m. hours.
Astoria: SHUT UP.
Daisy: Drive. Throughs.
Astoria: Like a Wendy's.
Daisy: Like a Wendy's! Roll up, roll down the window, "yeah can I get a, uh, quarter of the indica and a large fries."
Astoria: "And a large fries."
Daisy: "Sauce?" "Yeah, throw in a ranch."
Astoria: Oh my god. So the Midwest is going drive-thru and SF is going sit-down small plates.
Daisy: SF is going small plates! With a jazz trio!
Astoria: The regional stereotypes are HOLDING.
Daisy: The stereotypes are, if anything, intensifying.
Astoria: They're doubling down.
Daisy: Everyone is leaning in. Chicago's like, "we're gonna do this in the car at two in the morning." San Francisco's like, "we're doing this seated, with a duo on upright bass."
Astoria: With a small ceramic plate of olives.
Daisy: With a small ceramic plate of olives! Yes!
Astoria: Okay okay okay, hot take time. Hot take time.
Daisy: Hit me.
Astoria: Which model wins in five years.
Daisy: Oh, that's a real question.
Astoria: That's a real question.
Daisy: Okay, gut. My gut says the sit-down model wins culturally, the drive-thru wins revenue.
Astoria: Explain.
Daisy: The drive-thru is a transaction. It's efficient. It'll print money. But the cafés are gonna be the thing people take pictures of. The cafés are gonna be the thing on TV.
Astoria: Okay I hear you but — pushback.
Daisy: Push.
Astoria: The café model has a REAL problem, which is that being high in public with strangers is not actually most people's fantasy.
Daisy: Oh.
Astoria: Most people want to be high on their couch. In sweatpants. Eating out of a colander.
Daisy: Hey.
Astoria: I said what I said.
Daisy: You're not wrong.
Astoria: Like the fantasy of the cannabis café is real, but the actual experience of being stoned around forty other stoned strangers listening to a saxophone... is that a Tuesday you want?
Daisy: Is that a Tuesday you want.
Astoria: Be honest.
Daisy: No. No, on a Tuesday I want the colander.
Astoria: You want the colander.
Daisy: I want the colander. But on a Saturday, if I'm visiting a friend, and someone says "hey there's a place in the Mission with a jazz trio and mocktails and edibles"—
Astoria: —you'd go.
Daisy: I would BOOK it. I would be first in line.
Astoria: Okay so it's a tourist play. It's a special-occasion play.
Daisy: It's a birthday. It's a bachelorette. It's a "my aunt is in town and she's cooler than we thought."
Astoria: "Aunt Deb wants to try it."
Daisy: Aunt Deb wants to try it, and Aunt Deb is NOT going to a drive-thru at midnight.
Astoria: Aunt Deb wants a small plate.
Daisy: Aunt Deb wants a small plate and a jazz trio.
Astoria: Okay so both models survive because they serve different customers.
Daisy: Different customers, different nights, different moods.
Astoria: See, this is us doing analysis. This is us being smart.
Daisy: We're being smart. Our moms would be so proud.
Astoria: My mom would be horrified.
Daisy: My mom would be horrified but she'd listen to the episode.
Astoria: She'd listen and then call you.
Daisy: She'd listen and then call me and go, "the colander, Daisy? THE COLANDER?"
Astoria: "I raised you better."
Daisy: "I raised you better and I bought you bowls."
Astoria: Okay we should wrap. What's the takeaway. Give me one takeaway.
Daisy: One takeaway. Okay. If you can get your hands on Sub Zero, or honestly anything in that Super Boof or Oreoz family — try it on a night with no obligations, low stakes, and PRE. PLATED. SNACKS.
Astoria: Pre-plated snacks. Do not trust future you.
Daisy: Do not trust future you. Future you is a raccoon.
Astoria: Future you is a raccoon.
Daisy: And if you're anywhere near San Francisco this fall, keep an eye on when those cafés actually open, because the ordinance is live August 23rd but the permits are gonna trickle.
Astoria: Trickle is the word. Very SF.
Daisy: Very SF.
Astoria: Alright, that's the show.
Daisy: That's the show!
Astoria: If you liked this, or you tolerated this—
Daisy: Or you tolerated us—
Astoria: —you can find more of this nonsense, plus actual useful cannabis stuff, at mncannabishub dot com.
Daisy: Mncannabishub dot com. Go there. Read things. Learn things. Do not read while operating a colander.
Astoria: Do not operate a colander.
Daisy: We love you. Bye.
Astoria: Bye.
