to look at today, what we want to embrace is being versus doing, right? 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:36.400 Every world religion has an aspect of it of if you want to be pleasing to God, if you want --> 00:05:29.420 by the way, I'm not feeling bad today, right? 00:05:29.520 --> 00:05:35.320 But if I was and I could diagnose my symptoms and I could choose the over-the-counter medicine 00:05:35.320 00:06:05.360 And as Jesus is going to call a group of people to follow him, where he's going to begin within 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:11.980 there is them becoming who they need to be, resting in who they are. 00:06:12.980 --> 00:06:21.720 Because our faith, where we're going to find ourselves, is not going to be based in a list 00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:27.360 of religious rules, but it's going to be found and we're going to be based in Christ and we're 00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:28.580 going to be rooted in. 00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:33.060 So in chapter 6, the parts that we're not going to read, but we're just going to look 00:06:33.060 --> 00:06:37.120 at real briefly, Jesus is walking and begins to teach. 00:06:38.440 --> 00:06:42.580 The Pharisees are going to bring up some things that Jesus' disciples are doing, that even 00:06:42.580 --> 00:06:43.280 Jesus does. 00:06:43.380 --> 00:06:47.260 And as he interacts with them at the beginning of chapter 6, Jesus is going to declare, like, 00:06:47.320 --> 00:06:48.840 hey, here's who I am, right? 00:06:48.900 --> 00:06:54.520 Like, I am divine and I have authority to say, this is important, Jesus says, I have the authority 00:06:54.520 --> 00:06:57.480 to define and to say what pleases God. 00:06:58.520 --> 00:07:05.240 And then Jesus retreats and he goes off by himself and he prays and he comes back and 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:10.360 he appoints his closest group of disciples that are going to follow him during his earthly 00:07:10.360 --> 00:07:10.840 ministry. 00:07:10.940 --> 00:07:15.420 We're going to see the 12 that are chosen and Luke lists them by name. 00:07:16.380 --> 00:07:20.100 And at the very last one, he's going to say, and Judas Iscariot, who would betray him. 00:07:20.980 --> 00:07:25.980 And so Jesus, as he is living his life, is going to follow and call the men that are going 00:07:25.980 --> 00:07:28.700 to follow him. 00:07:28.700 --> 00:07:32.500 And in that is the reminder of the cross, of the work that Jesus will do so that we may 00:07:32.500 --> 00:07:36.580 come into a relationship with him, is that reminder through Judas Iscariot. 00:07:37.320 --> 00:07:41.080 And then in verse 16, it says that Jesus looks around and he begins to teach. 00:07:41.960 --> 00:07:43.240 And we're going to refer to this. 00:07:43.320 --> 00:07:48.260 I read a guy that referred to this as the sermon on the plane because in verse 17, it said he 00:07:48.260 --> 00:07:50.220 stood on level ground. 00:07:50.940 --> 00:07:54.320 And what we're going to notice is if you've heard of before, maybe you haven't heard of 00:07:54.320 --> 00:07:56.820 the sermon on the plane, but you've heard of the sermon on the mount. 00:07:57.580 --> 00:08:01.660 And there's going to be some similarities between the sermon on the plane and the sermon on the 00:08:01.660 --> 00:08:04.380 mount, but there's going to be some differences as well. 00:08:05.320 --> 00:08:09.480 Jesus lists or Luke lists a couple of cities where the people there are present. 00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:13.200 And one thing that's interesting is in the sermon on the mount, what we find is a largely 00:08:13.200 --> 00:08:20.040 Jewish audience, but on the sermon on the plane, what we're going to find is largely a Gentile 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:20.640 audience. 00:08:21.540 --> 00:08:23.240 And Jesus, he teaches through this. 00:08:23.660 --> 00:08:27.360 It's shorter, but he's going to focus in on what we're going to call the blessings and 00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:29.880 the woes based off of the words of Christ. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:33.260 And so let's begin by looking at the blessings, starting in verse 20. 00:08:34.460 --> 00:08:41.920 It says, and he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, blessed are you who are poor 00:08:41.920 --> 00:08:44.860 for yours is the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:45.800 --> 00:08:51.380 Blessed are you who are hungry now for you shall be satisfied. 00:08:52.460 --> 00:08:57.920 Blessed are you who weep now for you shall laugh. 00:08:59.080 --> 00:09:04.700 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your 00:09:04.700 --> 00:09:07.820 name as evil on the account of the son of man. 00:09:08.820 --> 00:09:17.680 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy for behold, your reward is great in heaven for so their 00:09:17.680 --> 00:09:20.780 fathers did to the prophets. 00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:26.740 And so Jesus is going to describe what it means to be blessed. 00:09:26.980 --> 00:09:33.000 And just as he did in the sermon on the mount, Jesus draws some areas of life where we would 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:38.560 say, I don't necessarily know that that's the blessing of life that I'm going to choose. 00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:44.800 Poverty isn't necessarily what we would think of as a blessing. 00:09:45.900 --> 00:09:52.600 Being mocked and being persecuted, you and I, we don't naturally look at that after a long 00:09:52.600 --> 00:09:56.540 day of experiencing abuse and say, you know, that truly was a blessing. 00:09:57.240 --> 00:10:03.940 We don't hit that point with hunger pains within us and think, oh man, I sure do feel blessed 00:10:03.940 --> 00:10:04.660 today. 00:10:05.860 --> 00:10:09.360 And so we want to begin to understand like, Jesus, what are you talking about? 00:10:09.500 --> 00:10:14.780 And if we're not careful, what we can look at is we can take this on and say, this is 00:10:14.780 --> 00:10:18.000 what I must do in order to be blessed. 00:10:18.140 --> 00:10:20.480 But here's what I want us to notice in Jesus' words, all right? 00:10:20.820 --> 00:10:25.260 And my grammar may be off on this, but I hope it conveys what we're trying to get to. 00:10:25.680 --> 00:10:27.060 I don't do blessed. 00:10:27.300 --> 00:10:29.460 I am blessed, right? 00:10:30.260 --> 00:10:32.500 I don't do blessed. 00:10:33.660 --> 00:10:36.480 Jesus says that we are blessed. 00:10:37.300 --> 00:10:43.560 In the verbs in which he uses, we begin to see blessing as what is given to us, as what's 00:10:43.560 --> 00:10:46.880 imparted to us, as what God is giving us. 00:10:46.880 --> 00:10:51.420 And so you and I don't figure out what we need to do so that we can be blessed. 00:10:51.660 --> 00:10:57.300 But instead, blessing is who we are, so that I am blessed. --> 00:11:10.860 I don't do weeping. 00:11:11.020 --> 00:11:11.700 I weep. 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:13.060 And here's what I mean by this, right? 00:11:13.060 --> 00:11:18.820 Like, when we talk about weeping, where does weeping come from, right? 00:11:19.260 --> 00:11:25.840 Weeping doesn't come from your external means in order to get you to weep. 00:11:27.020 --> 00:11:32.640 Weeping is an outside reaction to internally what is happening to you, right? 00:11:32.700 --> 00:11:36.860 Like, I don't weep because I hurt my arm. 00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:42.440 I weep because I hurt the arm and my body reacts to the pain that is within me. 00:11:43.100 --> 00:11:45.380 And so weeping comes from within me. 00:11:45.480 --> 00:11:47.220 It's based in who I am. 00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:48.800 I scripture says. 00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:11.340 And he begins to define who they are if they are in him. 00:12:12.200 --> 00:12:15.700 He defines what blessing looks like. 00:12:16.520 --> 00:12:21.340 And everything that Jesus is going to do, everything that Jesus is going to pour into them is going 00:12:21.340 --> 00:12:30.200 to be counter culture from what they've experienced and from what you and I, if we're honest, what we experience 00:12:30.200 --> 00:12:32.300 and oftentimes what we even want. 00:12:33.040 --> 00:12:34.340 So what's Jesus talking about? 00:12:35.140 --> 00:12:36.780 Jesus says that we're poor. 00:12:36.980 --> 00:12:38.940 And what this means is that we're poor. 00:12:39.060 --> 00:12:43.280 There's this spiritual poverty where we're desperate for God. 00:12:44.340 --> 00:12:47.160 Jesus says that we are blessed if we are hungry. 00:12:47.340 --> 00:12:51.740 And what we are longing for is to be satisfied by God and God alone. 00:12:52.100 --> 00:12:59.920 Jesus says that we are blessed if weeping is who we are because we are discontent with the sin of ourselves 00:12:59.920 --> 00:13:01.460 and the sin of this world. 00:13:01.540 --> 00:13:04.520 And what we long for is godly sorrow. 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:08.360 That we are blessed if we are hated. 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:17.780 Because what is in us produces something that produces the obedience because who we are. 00:13:18.600 --> 00:13:25.760 You see, Jesus is pointing us to that a blessed life is not the life that we earn. 00:13:26.700 --> 00:13:32.060 But a blessed life is the life that is given by God to us. 00:13:32.480 --> 00:13:35.560 It's the gift of grace that was in our lives. 00:13:35.560 --> 00:13:38.160 And so Jesus looks at him and says, you want to 00:14:14.920 Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:21.320 Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 00:14:22.280 --> 00:14:29.460 Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. 00:14:29.460 --> 00:14:31.740 We see the opposite of what was before. 00:14:32.020 --> 00:14:35.340 What was before is what they did to the prophets. 00:14:35.500 --> 00:14:42.020 They persecuted the men of truth and the women of truth, but not so with the false prophets. 00:14:42.260 --> 00:14:44.380 Here's what I you, temporary. 00:15:04.540 --> 00:15:10.140 In every single instance, every woe that Jesus warns us about are the things that are temporary. 00:15:10.940 --> 00:15:13.440 I was listening to a pastor a couple weeks ago. 00:15:13.600 --> 00:15:16.740 I was waiting outside for a meeting to take place. 00:15:16.800 --> 00:15:22.040 I couldn't go into the building yet and I was listening to a sermon and the pastor was talking 00:15:22.040 --> 00:15:26.880 about this and here's what he said and I'd never thought of it this way and it just impacted 00:15:26.880 --> 00:15:27.800 me greatly. 00:15:27.800 --> 00:15:36.980 He said, what we sinfully fill our lives with and sinfully find our satisfaction in will one 00:15:36.980 --> 00:15:40.520 day end up in garage sales and landfills. 00:15:43.340 --> 00:15:44.580 Blew me away. 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:47.160 Blew me away. 00:15:48.120 --> 00:15:56.240 That one day all of those things that I value, those things that I find comfort in, will one 00:15:56.240 --> 00:16:02.200 day sit in my driveway and I'll try to negotiate a quarter either way with someone. 00:16:04.460 --> 00:16:14.540 That one day when I pass from this life to eternity with Christ, what those who are behind, what 00:16:14.540 --> 00:16:23.140 my son and daughter will do is they'll go through the stuff, keep some things that they want and 00:16:23.140 --> 00:16:26.260 drop the rest off at a goodwill or a landfill. 00:16:27.700 --> 00:16:35.860 Those things that we sinfully find our satisfaction in, those things that we sinfully find our joy
