thousands of years, that when it comes to Jesus and the gospel, they've heard, they've been instructed, they've been taught, 00:08:02.300 --> 00:08:06.720 they've been given God's word, but they've We're going to hear a lot about international missions and what God calls us to do and to go out. 00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:29.000 Dealing with lost people and sharing the gospel is always complicated and context matters, okay? 00:08:29.280 --> 00:08:36.040 And so I've been to places like India and shared the gospel with people who have never heard the name of Jesus before. 00:08:36.180 --> 00:08:37.040 And I love that. 00:08:37.100 --> 00:08:42.340 And that's filled with its own difficulties in trying to understand and communicate the gospel. 00:08:42.340 --> 00:08:53.960 But then I also come back into a culture that if you've never lived outside of South Carolina or Lexington or even the greater part of the area of the United States, 00:08:54.260 --> 00:09:00.560 what we refer to as the Bible Belt, that there are people who would culturally align as Christians. 00:09:00.560 --> 00:09:12.980 There are people who within surface level behaviors would align themselves with saying that they are a follower of Jesus Christ or I love God or something just in a general statement with that. 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:18.960 But when it comes to Jesus and the gospel, their eyes have been distracted by something else. 00:09:19.180 --> 00:09:21.040 And in that moment, they miss it. 00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:22.740 They miss it. 00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:35.000 And for so many people, I had a conversation with a young man who was visiting our church after the 930 service. 00:09:36.400 --> 00:09:40.500 And he came up to me and he was sharing a little bit about who he is and led me to tell him the journey of me, of being raised in church and for 22 years of my life completely missing it. 00:09:52.840 --> 00:10:00.960 Doing the things, going to the camps, making decisions, they're told that Jesus is the way for not going there, which is true. 00:10:31.900 --> 00:10:41.220 And then their response, their reaction to that is, well then, if that's bad, if he's the way out of the bad, then I'll take Jesus. 00:10:42.220 --> 00:10:45.780 If that's the option, then just give that to me. 00:10:45.780 --> 00:10:52.100 And then we walk away from there missing the fullness of look at a couple things this morning. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:23.360 Is that the gospel, yes, it changes our eternity. 00:11:23.560 --> 00:11:30.160 But the gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of men and women who are found in Christ, it changes our today. 00:11:31.860 --> 00:11:33.320 Everything about of who we are. 00:11:34.540 --> 00:11:38.880 When we are saved by the gospel, our eternal destination is changed. 00:11:39.080 --> 00:11:45.680 But also our current lives are transformed and the purpose of what God gives us is changed as well. 00:11:46.340 --> 00:11:52.580 Because when men and women and children are changed or saved by the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:11:52.760 --> 00:11:57.320 our eyes and our hearts are open to the fact that we are a sinner who is incapable. 00:11:58.700 --> 00:12:03.000 Not who can't figure it out, but who's incapable of saving ourselves. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:09.840 So what we need is Jesus who saves us, who restores us, who redeems us, 00:12:09.960 --> 00:12:14.900 who brings us into relationship with God, who sends us the Holy Spirit, who indwells in us. 00:12:14.900 --> 00:12:19.060 I heard a pastor say one time, and I love this and repeat this so many times in my mind, 00:12:19.140 --> 00:12:24.200 that God loves you too much to save you from your sin and then leave you in it. 00:12:25.460 --> 00:12:33.000 And he wants to restore us so that the person that we were is no longer the person that we are. 00:12:34.200 --> 00:12:38.040 And so things in who we are and what we're about begin to change. 00:12:38.120 gave himself up for me. 00:12:53.800 --> 00:12:55.140 2 Corinthians 5.17. 00:12:55.280 --> 00:12:58.600 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is the same person that he was before. 00:12:59.020 --> 00:12:59.360 No. 00:13:00.560 --> 00:13:03.560 If anyone is in Christ, Scripture says he is a new creation. 00:13:04.420 --> 00:13:06.280 The old has passed away. 00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:09.460 Behold, the new has come. 00:13:09.460 --> 00:13:15.300 And so here's my concern for those of us who would culturally just align ourselves and say, 00:13:15.620 --> 00:13:17.040 yeah, I'm Christian, right? 00:13:17.200 --> 00:13:21.860 Is that if we miss who Jesus is, if we miss what Jesus came to do, 00:13:22.020 --> 00:13:26.120 if we miss the commands and not the suggestions of the gospel, 00:13:27.500 --> 00:13:34.240 then we ignore all of this, and then Jesus just becomes the means to the end for us. 00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:40.940 And our lives are not submitted and surrendered to him began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice 00:14:05.760 --> 00:14:08.660 for all the mighty works they had seen, saying, 00:14:08.820 --> 00:14:11.200 Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:14:11.520 --> 00:14:14.040 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. 00:14:14.340 --> 00:14:17.000 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 00:14:17.280 --> 00:14:18.980 Teacher, rebuke your disciples. 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:19.600 Verse 40. 00:14:19.820 --> 00:14:24.420 And he answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. 00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:27.300 So I want us to look at one thing, because we've got to work through this, 00:14:27.360 --> 00:14:29.640 but just one thing within this. 00:14:29.640 --> 00:14:35.480 So the picture that we see is Jesus and the whole multitude of the disciples. 00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:36.880 So this is all of them. 00:14:37.140 --> 00:14:40.360 And they're walking and they're journeying with Jesus, 00:14:40.580 --> 00:14:43.440 and they're celebrating him, what Luke's gospel says, 00:14:43.540 --> 00:14:45.120 because of the works they'd seen. 00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:48.100 So as they're talking around, they're praising God, 00:14:48.180 --> 00:14:51.220 because did you see what Jesus did when he healed that man? 00:14:51.380 --> 00:14:54.140 Did you see what Jesus did when he called the dead girl back to life? 00:14:54.300 --> 00:14:56.520 Did you see what Jesus did when he cast out the demons? 00:14:56.780 --> 00:15:00.260 Do you remember what it's like to see Jesus when he fed the thousands? 00:15:00.360 --> 00:15:04.060 Like you've got all of these conversations that are happening and that are taking place, 00:15:04.100 --> 00:15:06.680 and the people are celebrating all that God has done. 00:15:06.880 --> 00:15:09.980 And this is like this joyous time within him of this. 00:15:10.020 --> 00:15:10.820 This is exciting. 00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:12.900 They can't believe that this is all going on. 00:15:13.040 --> 00:15:15.520 Now let's put this in the context of what is happening. 00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:19.740 This is the Passion Week of Jesus headed to the cross. that. 00:15:34.460 --> 00:15:38.840 Jesus has said, I'm going to go die and be buried for three days and we'll rise again. 00:15:40.720 --> 00:15:42.460 And he's on his journey to the cross. 00:15:43.900 --> 00:15:45.220 And they miss it. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:51.460 In spite of what Jesus had been clearly telling him, they miss it. 00:15:52.660 --> 00:15:56.640 And for many in that crowd, Judas included, 00:15:58.420 --> 00:15:59.960 in spite of what Jesus has said, 00:16:01.080 --> 00:16:03.060 in spite of what they understand, 00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:04.480 in spite of what they've been taught, 00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:06.580 in spite of what they've been exposed to, 00:16:06.580 --> 00:16:11.820 they think that their journey in Jerusalem is going to be this earthly kingdom 00:16:11.820 --> 00:16:15.580 that's going to kick out Rome and reestablish what was there 00:16:15.580 --> 00:16:17.560 and go back to the time of David. 00:16:19.040 --> 00:16:20.860 And as different members, including Judas, 00:16:20.980 --> 00:16:23.300 begin to realize, like, this ain't what's going on, 00:16:23.400 --> 00:16:25.520 they're like, well, then we're going to tap out.
