Shalom and welcome to our daily Ethics of our Fathers podcast. Today, we delve into Pirkey Avot, Chapter 1, Mishnah 18. Rabbi Shimon, the son of Rabban Gamliel said, "All my days I have grown up among the wise, and I have found nothing better for a person than silence. Studying Torah is not the main thing, but doing; and whoever talks excessively brings on sin." This Mishnah, my friends, is a critical message for our everyday lives. It emphasizes the power of silence and the importance of action over mere words. In our modern world, we are often bombarded with noise - chatter, news, social media. Rabbi Shimon encourages us to seek silence, to listen more and speak less. In doing so, we can truly hear the wisdom around us and within us. Moreover, this Mishnah underscores the importance of doing, of living out the values and lessons we learn from the Torah. It is not enough to merely study or talk about Torah. We must strive to embody its teachings in our daily actions and interactions, in our work, our relationships, and our contributions to society. And finally, Rabbi Shimon warns us of the pitfalls of excessive talk, which can lead us to sin. The more we speak, the greater the risk we take of speaking ill, of lying, of hurting others with our words. It is a reminder to measure our words carefully, to speak with kindness and truth, and to use our words to build, not destroy. In this way, we can live out the wisdom of this Mishnah and create a more ethical, compassionate, and just world. Remember, silence is golden, actions speak louder than words, and wisdom is gained through listening and doing, not merely speaking. Thank you for joining me in exploring this timeless wisdom.
