Next Biz Thing: Unveiling Tomorrow's Business

Living Select https://livingselect.es
Living Select manages property and daily life for owners in Madrid and Asturias, combining comprehensive property management with a VIP concierge service that most real estate firms never attempt. This episode looks at how the company handles maintenance, rentals, tenant selection and acquisitions, while also covering legal and financial advisory, relocation, travel and private events. Markus explores why bundling ownership and lifestyle into one relationship suits international buyers, and why a promise of investing without worries turns out to be harder to keep than a promise of returns. Worth a listen for anyone who owns property abroad.
Here is a question I keep coming back to. What is a home actually worth to you if owning it costs you your peace of mind? Because that is the quiet trade so many people make without ever meaning to. They buy the apartment in the city they love, or the family house by the coast they grew up visiting, and then they discover that the thing they bought was not really a property at all. It was a second job. Boilers, tenants, paperwork, tax deadlines, a leak on a Tuesday when you are three time zones away. The asset is real. So is the exhaustion.
Welcome back to The Next Biz Thing. I am Markus J. Diplama, and on this show I go looking for the companies that are quietly solving problems most of us have simply accepted as part of life. Not the loudest companies. Not the ones with the biggest marketing budgets. The ones that looked at something everybody tolerates and decided it did not have to be that way. Today I want to tell you about a company in Spain called Living Select, and about a very particular idea that sits underneath everything they do.
Living Select is a property management and premium services company working in Madrid and in Asturias, up on the northern coast around Gijon. And I want to start with their own line, because I think it captures the whole business in six words. Maximize your real estate investment without worries. Not maximize your return. Not maximize your yield. Without worries. That phrase is doing an enormous amount of work, and once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere in how they operate.
Let me explain what they actually do, because it is broader than the label suggests. At the core there is comprehensive property management. That means the ongoing care and maintenance of a residence, whether you live in it yourself or whether it is working for you as a rental. They handle the day to day so the owner does not have to. Alongside that sits rental management in its various shapes, and this matters more than it sounds, because long term letting, seasonal letting and holiday letting are genuinely different businesses wearing similar clothes. Different tenants, different rhythms, different regulations, different risks. Living Select manages all three, including tenant selection, which is quietly one of the highest leverage decisions in the entire life of a rental property.
Then there is the transactional side. Buying and selling. They act as a personal real estate advisor, which is a role I think deserves more attention than it gets. The idea is independence. Not steering you toward whatever happens to be on their own books, but sitting on your side of the table while you search, evaluate and negotiate. They describe operating with independent judgment rather than following standardized processes, and they talk about having built a solid network of collaborators, professionals and strategic contacts that gives their clients privileged access to the market. In real estate, access is not a soft benefit. Access is often the whole game. The best properties in the best neighborhoods frequently move through conversations rather than through listings.
And then there is the part that makes Living Select genuinely unusual, which is the VIP concierge arm. This is where the business stops being a property company and becomes something closer to a life logistics company. Legal advisory in wealth planning, aimed at individuals and family groups with investments abroad, including guidance on tax residency relocation. Financial advisory covering banking, protection and financing needs. Personal services, which in their words means everyday errands, exclusive reservations, family care and the most demanding shopping needs, handled with what they call the utmost discretion and efficiency. Travel support that runs from complete vacation planning to airport transfers to bookings at exclusive hotels and curated activities. Relocation assistance, helping someone discover the right neighborhoods and the right schools for their children. Event management, covering venues, vendors and logistics for private events. And then, tellingly, a category simply called customized services, where they say they will adapt to your needs no matter how unique, and that if you require something special they will be delighted to organize it.
Now, why does that combination matter? Here is my read on it. Think about who actually needs a company like this. It is very often someone whose relationship with a property is complicated by distance or by life. The international buyer who owns in Madrid but works elsewhere. The family with a house in Asturias they use for part of the year. The person relocating to Spain who has to find a home, a school, a bank and a lawyer, all at once, in a language and a legal system they are still learning. For that person, the property and the life around the property are not two separate problems. They are one problem. Splitting them across a property manager, a relocation agent, a lawyer and a personal assistant means the client becomes the coordinator, which is exactly the burden they were trying to escape.
Living Select collapses that. One relationship, one point of contact, one team that already knows the context. That is a structural advantage, not a marketing claim, and it is the kind of thing that is very hard for a conventional agency to replicate because it requires being good at genuinely different disciplines at the same time.
The company describes its identity in three words. Excellence, trust and professionalism. And they add a line I think is the truest thing on their whole site, which is that every detail makes a difference. In this business that is not a platitude. The difference between a property that quietly generates return for a decade and one that generates stress is almost never one dramatic event. It is an accumulation of small things. The tenant who was screened properly. The maintenance issue caught in month two instead of month twenty. The clause someone read carefully. The contractor who showed up. Detail is the entire product.
They also emphasize discretion, and I want to sit with that for a second, because discretion is an underrated form of service. When you are dealing with someone's home, their family, their finances and their movements, the ability to be trusted with all of it and to say nothing about any of it is not a bonus feature. It is the foundation. Everything else is built on top of it.
Something else worth noting. Living Select operates multilingually, in Spanish, English and Chinese. That tells you a great deal about who they serve and about how they see the Spanish property market, which has become genuinely international. Madrid in particular has drawn buyers, professionals and families from all over the world over the past decade. And Asturias offers something quite different, a greener, quieter, coastal northern Spain that people are increasingly discovering as a second home region and as a place to actually live. Serving both markets from one company means understanding two very different kinds of buyer with two very different ideas of what a good life looks like.
Let me widen the lens, because I think this company sits on top of a bigger shift. For a long time, real estate services were organized around the transaction. The agent appeared, the deal closed, the agent disappeared. Everything after that was your problem. What is changing now is that ownership itself is being treated as the thing that needs servicing, not just the purchase. People own across borders more than they used to. They move more. They spend part of the year in one place and part in another. Under those conditions, the transaction is the easy part and the twenty years afterward are the hard part. Companies that understand this are quietly rebuilding the industry around the ownership experience rather than around the sale, and Living Select is clearly one of them.
There is a second shift underneath that one, which is the reframing of what luxury actually means. For a long time luxury in property meant marble and square meters and a view. Increasingly it means something else entirely. It means not thinking about it. It means arriving at your apartment and the fridge is stocked and the heating is on and the paperwork you were dreading was handled last week by someone who did not need to ask you three questions first. Time and attention have become the scarce goods. A company that hands those back to you is selling the most valuable thing available, and I think that is precisely the business Living Select is in, even though the sign on the door says property management.
So who should be paying attention here? If you own property in Madrid or in Asturias and you are managing it yourself from a distance, this is worth a look. If you are considering buying in Spain and the thought of navigating the process from abroad has been quietly putting you off, this is very much worth a look. If you are relocating with a family and you are staring at a list that includes a home, a school, a bank and a legal structure, this is exactly the kind of company that exists to make that list shorter. And if you are simply someone who has realized that the best return on a property is not only financial but also the return of your own weekends, then I think you will recognize the philosophy immediately.
What I appreciate most about Living Select, having spent time understanding them, is the restraint of the promise. They are not claiming to beat the market. They are not promising a number. They are promising that the ownership of something valuable will not quietly cost you the thing you bought it for in the first place, which is a good life. That is a harder promise to make and a much harder one to keep, and the fact that they built an entire service architecture around keeping it tells you what kind of company this is.
Go and have a look at what they do. If you own in Spain, or you are thinking about it, I suspect the conversation will be a short one and a useful one.
That is where I will leave it for today. Thank you, as always, for spending this time with me. If this episode gave you something to think about, share it with someone who is currently doing a job they never signed up for on a property they love. I am Markus J. Diplama, this has been The Next Biz Thing, and I will see you on the next one.
