Mike Walker (00:04.337) Right, gotta hit the button. Mike Walker (00:28.699) Books, books, books. What's the hook? David Patrick (00:30.542) books, books. The hook is, oh wait, I like the throw books. Are you ready? this. Here's the hook. Yeah, we did Fancy Nancy and. Mike Walker (00:37.413) Whoa, come on, hurry up. Fancy Nancy. Whoa. Well, there you go. There's our hook. David Patrick (00:44.482) You're watching. Mike Walker (00:47.205) You're watching dads throwing books so that we can sit on them. Like lily pads if we were a frog or a toad. yeah, cool Ted. David Patrick (00:49.398) Yes. Ooh. Yes. David Patrick (00:55.584) Yes, or a frog and toad. Mike Walker (01:01.819) What did we name them? Ted and Todd and Fred. Todd and Fred. That's how I got Ted, because I put them together and they were one. David Patrick (01:07.448) Todd and Fred, I like Bert. David Patrick (01:12.342) I love it. A Bert and Ernie or is that no, that's something else. OK, I'm now just saying things so we can link as many episodes as possible to this one. Mike Walker (01:20.325) Ha ha ha. David Patrick (01:23.278) They're on to me. Thank you. In the world. Mike Walker (01:23.633) I your thinking. I'm Batman. Mike Walker (01:31.995) where dads read books. This week we read... David Patrick (01:38.03) New Year's. sorry. The New Year's Eve sleepover from the Black Lagoon. Mike Walker (01:46.939) Please don't get that wrong because the is so important. David Patrick (01:53.058) And there's not one but two does in what might be the longest title of any book we've done so far. Mike Walker (01:59.675) Quite possibly, but not the longest title of our episodes that we usually use the title of the book and then make something random up. Yes. David Patrick (02:09.047) something. We yes and it. We accept the title. And then we end stop it. what? It's a Thanksgiving episode. Hey, Dan, the man got me in. Okay, so if you want to look at our other episodes that are relevant to today's check out the 17 links down below. Mike Walker (02:14.481) And, and stuff it. What is it? A turkey? Hey, hi Dan Gutman. How are you? Anyway. Mike Walker (02:34.843) That would be exactly almost half of our episode. David Patrick (02:38.667) Yes, exactly. Almost. I love it. All the bases are covered there. So should let's go ahead and talk about the book, shall we? Okay. Mike Walker (02:40.621) Almost exactly. Mike Walker (02:46.233) Yes, let's. So the book is about, as you might have guessed, New Year's Eve. so basically this kid is going to go to a sleepover at his friend's house with several of his friends. And they're going to have a great time, except he doesn't want to go because it's first time he'll ever be away from home sleeping at somebody else's house. Yeah. David Patrick (03:11.758) no! no! Well, yes, and as usual, you know me, clean slate Dave. I the only thing I knew about this book when I started reading it was there was probably a sleepover on New Year's Eve. There was something about the Black Lagoon. I didn't even look at the cover, actually, now that I think about it, and I definitely didn't read all of the stuff on the back cover because you know me. So I had to. Mike Walker (03:16.303) rough, rough times ahead. Mike Walker (03:29.891) Yep. Mike Walker (03:37.218) yeah. Mike Walker (03:43.008) yeah, clean slate. Mike Walker (03:48.827) Tell me I want the let's get the bad news out of the way because that's like New Year's Eve get the bad news out. So the new news of the new year is fresh and clean like the driven snows. David Patrick (03:49.513) What news do you want first? David Patrick (04:06.175) The new news of. I love it, the new news of the new year, that's a lot of news, dude. So the bad news, I immediately do. did. I don't know why just said that. Yeah. So the bad news, the bad news is I didn't really care for this book. Mike Walker (04:12.257) It is. You news it. Mike Walker (04:19.628) I don't either. Mike Walker (04:26.533) Fair enough. David Patrick (04:27.413) Okay. And I did kind of say it kind of squeakily not because I don't want to admit if I don't like a book, we've done that. That's if we're not honest, then we're not. Anyway, I don't know what we're not. But yeah. But the good news is I did love it at the very beginning, because I opened up to the first page. And there was a picture of a frog at the very top. And there was a thing that said frog with an arrow to it. Mike Walker (04:37.093) Yes. David Patrick (04:56.801) And I wrote down, you had me at frog. Mike Walker (05:01.595) Chapter one, frog. David Patrick (05:01.727) And yes, and at the bottom of that same page, there's a little toad and it's probably drawn the exact same way. So these drawings will not let you know the difference between a frog and a toad. it says toad and I was like, frog and toad. Mike Walker (05:14.065) how cute. David Patrick (05:15.777) So more good news is when I saw those, thought, man, this book's going to be awesome. And in its defense, there are lots of things like that, lots of illustrations that are hilarious that I loved. But it just. Mike Walker (05:27.867) Did you say Milleestrations? David Patrick (05:30.967) Probably... Maybe... Mike Walker (05:34.289) I was like, did he say millions of illustrations or milliestrations? Because that's pretty cool. I like that. Milliestrations. You heard it here first. Absolutely. David Patrick (05:41.102) It's a new, it's a new contraction. It's yes, we made it up. We're copyrighting it. We're neologists. We make up new words. No, but I, I, I enjoyed the book because I really liked reading it. There were some, there were some stuff in the writing that was funny and there was a lot in the illustrations that was really funny. But by the end I was kind of like, okay. That's sort of the bad news isn't that bad, but that's the news. Mike Walker (06:11.761) Do you want to hear the good news or the bad news first? David Patrick (06:14.667) Mike, let's get the bad news out of the way and then you can tell me the good news after. Mike Walker (06:19.259) Bad news is, I didn't love the book either. The good news is, I agree with you. Yeah. David Patrick (06:23.597) Wow. David Patrick (06:28.853) Really awesome. So once again, we are literally and figuratively. you on page six? On the same. Mike Walker (06:35.909) Yes, no, I'm still on my phone. I turned it off, even though I changed the settings so it would stay on for 30 minutes. Nope, turned it off. Wait, which page am I? I'm on page nine. But I think my, what page, what's on your page six? David Patrick (06:51.286) We are f- David Patrick (06:55.981) Chapter one, Happy New Year, Frog. Words and drawings, Toad. Mike Walker (06:59.828) see, that's number that's page eight to me. So we're, we're not calibrated. Yeah. David Patrick (07:02.468) so we're not calibrated. Boo. Well, Mike, we are figuratively on the same page. Mike Walker (07:08.081) I was on page nine, so I was close. David Patrick (07:14.935) So, yeah, so I really enjoyed a lot of it's almost even like I said, lot of the writing I did enjoy just the overall end. was kind of like, really, it's going to end. But there was so much in the middle that I liked and I loved the craziness of the illustrations. Mike Walker (07:25.84) Yeah. Mike Walker (07:32.367) Yes, and I agree with that. Especially I, I got the feeling of a kid who was like telling the story and drawing pictures to go with it. Not like this is an adult who just drew some stuff. No, it felt like, this is this kid. And these illustrations came out of his mind, like David Patrick (07:47.68) yeah! David Patrick (07:54.082) Got it. David Patrick (08:01.001) Mm hmm. Well, yeah. Well, what his fear? I mean, you you mentioned early on that the problem is Eric. Eric's having the sleepover. What's the name of the our narrator? Mike Walker (08:01.135) the things he was worried about or other things. Yeah. Mike Walker (08:18.531) Huebie, which that is a question I did not look up and I meant to what is Huebie short for? Huber? David Patrick (08:26.189) First thing for well, first thing that popped in my head was hubris. But this this guy is the opposite of hubris. He's afraid. But no, the point is, yeah, I could just imagine with hubi being afraid and to your point, his imagination goes wild. I love the idea of she's dropping me off in space and what his fear of being left alone in space. That's what this sleepover is. And I love that image of him on the moon with mom flying away. Mike Walker (08:39.109) Mm-mm. David Patrick (08:55.895) And he's like, bye. Actually, he goes, but that's what it is. He goes, but. And it's a boy that but is in the illustration, so it's a voice bubble. And it's one of the loving graphic novels and comics and all that that you can see moving up. But OK, I'm all alone on this little little Petit Prince moon thing. Mike Walker (09:00.175) Yeah, but. Mike Walker (09:17.453) And if we're gonna keep going back to other shows, because this is our year end, capping off our year, I'm gonna go back to, hmm, I smell a butt. David Patrick (09:22.075) Yes! David Patrick (09:29.037) With one T everyone. you dirty minds out there. You stop that. Mike Walker (09:31.633) you Mike Walker (09:36.933) Well, isn't that special? Mike Walker (09:42.757) So I agree with that though. I did love the little things in the artwork like that. The next one I remember, like the next page is he sees the other three kids that are also sleeping over and he sees their space bus flying off. David Patrick (09:49.133) Mm-hmm. Yep. David Patrick (09:56.087) Mm-hmm. David Patrick (10:06.985) Yes. Mike Walker (10:08.753) Um, one of the things I didn't, I think a missed opportunity in this was exploring that because I don't feel like, like by the end, I, I was like, eh, I don't know if I really need, have to read another one of these, but I feel like there was a missed opportunity that the four kids that were sleeping over David Patrick (10:15.213) That's a good way of putting it. Mike Walker (10:38.641) could have had that bond of this is the first time and we're all scared. Right? David Patrick (10:44.853) Yes. And you're absolutely right, because now when I first looked at them, I just assumed that he was the only one who was scared. And when I first saw those three boys who were also scared, I this is great. So you're right. There could have been more bonding with the four of them. OK, yeah. Mike Walker (10:58.489) Yeah. Well, and I thought there was going to be that's and that was because that was my initial reaction was, look, all of them. It's their first time, or maybe it's a couple. Maybe it's only two of them. But there was this great opportunity to bond. And unfortunately, it didn't happen over peach pie. David Patrick (11:22.733) Let's leave that. That's a spoiler alert. And that's for those you wondering, which is probably any one of you who has not read this book. That is hilarious. And if you want to find out why I do recommend despite our and I'm serious, despite our opinions, I do recommend that you check out this book, because for one thing, I thought I put it on hold at one of my local libraries and they had it. Mike Walker (11:27.277) Okay. Yes. Mike Walker (11:43.717) Yeah. David Patrick (11:51.534) And I went yesterday to pick it up and I had no hold. It wasn't there. And I said, well, I guess it was at one of the other libraries. So why don't they checked? And it turns out they had it there. So I got it from the Great Vine Public Library. But the gentleman who helped me, I believe, is he was Mark. He he was familiar with the series. Because I was he's like, what's the name? I'm like, one second. And I'm looking it up because there's 18 words in it, many of which are the and one of them is sleep over. Mike Walker (12:08.079) Hey Mark. Okay. David Patrick (12:19.979) And so I got the word right, but he found the book. He was familiar with the series and yeah, so I thought it was going be hard to find and it wasn't. I don't know why I was mentioning all this, but sidebar, today's Wednesday and I teach the theater elective at my girl's school at Holy Trinity Catholic School and it's in the library. And I was talking to our librarian today mentioning this book and she goes, yep, I'm familiar with it. And I did inadvertent research. She said that the book And I noticed that it is, did you notice who it's published by? Scholastic. On the back of my copy, says Scholastic, which is, you know, book fairs and. Mike Walker (12:52.687) I did not. Okay. Yep. Mike Walker (13:00.269) Now that you say that, I do remember seeing that. I was like, I didn't look that up. right. But it is on the back cover. And I did read the back cover on my phone at the end of the book. David Patrick (13:03.169) Okay. David Patrick (13:08.385) Well, I may have, yep. David Patrick (13:14.461) and they have all of the Black Lagoon adventures listed on the back. I may have mistaken. Mike Walker (13:17.903) Yep. Or all of the ones up to that point. We don't know because we didn't research. David Patrick (13:23.405) I exactly but she said this Dickinson the library at Holy Trinity Catholic School said that the point of the book is to be very repetitive. And so that kids could kind of learn to read and get into reading. And obviously, it's not, you know, pop on pop primary C spot run. But now that I'm thinking about it, generally boys get into reading less than girls do and later. Mike Walker (13:39.183) Yeah. Mike Walker (13:50.787) later. Yep. David Patrick (13:52.92) So I'll bet you this series was conceived to get boys to read. And now that I'm looking at it, this is just coming to me. Now that I'm looking at the book through that prism, this is a fantastic book. Mike Walker (14:05.393) I would agree. would. Yep. David Patrick (14:08.599) Cause if a boy says, I don't like reading and picks this up and loves it, then Hey, mission accomplished. Mike Walker (14:14.149) Because there's so much more to reading, I think that people don't like think about, we're older, we read all the time. But when you're first starting out and you're not really aware of how you can visualize things in your head, you're not thinking about that. And this is a great book for that because it shows you that mind of the kid who you're reading about. David Patrick (14:43.777) Yes. And it engages these young boys who may or may not want to read. And it's not a graphic novel, but there's so much illustrations in it that it, yeah, I love it. I love that. That's so fun. Mike Walker (14:50.105) Absolutely. Yes. So it's, it's kind of that step between the reading, learning to read books, like the I can read series, and, you know, chapter, like bigger chapter books with less pictures, cause you don't need the pictures anymore. Although I really liked the pictures. I was always into the pictures. I think that's probably part of the reason I slowed down on reading some. David Patrick (15:15.179) Right. yeah. Mike Walker (15:23.909) because I was like, that's cool, but I wish there were pictures, because I like to see what somebody else is visualizing and then think about it and put it into my own thing. David Patrick (15:38.67) We will probably talk about that when we do the Chronicles of Narnia. I don't know if I mentioned to you, but Delaney, my oldest daughter, the other day I was talking, I think Lucy, my youngest is reading The Horse and His Boy, which is one of those books. And I mentioned it and Delaney said, you know what? I think I need to revisit the Chronicles of Narnia. And I said, that's our next episode. Mike Walker (15:42.917) Yeah, absolutely. Mike Walker (16:03.323) That's awesome. David Patrick (16:04.429) Pauline, I think her name is Pauline Baines. She did illustrations for the book. I don't know if she was the first one, but they were in my copies that I got in the late 70s. And it was just one at each chapter heading. OK, you and I and probably millions of other kids probably envision Narnia from her drawings. They were so iconic. They were simple. They were black and white. Mike Walker (16:11.707) Mm-hmm. Mike Walker (16:16.697) Yep. Yeah, I remember that. Mike Walker (16:26.885) Yep. Yeah. David Patrick (16:30.463) And so that's a good point. Those are those are full all out chapter books, but with one picture per chapter helps create the world, but then still lets you imagine that world on your own. Which I love. Word. Mike Walker (16:41.455) Yeah. True that. Yo. David Patrick (16:47.361) Hey, let's, do you have a couple of details from the book that you want to highlight? Okay. One of the many zany illustrations on my page 12, it's the title page for chapter three blanket security. Mike Walker (16:51.606) I did. You start. Mike Walker (17:04.389) blanket security. Yes. David Patrick (17:06.603) And I'm guessing that here's what happened. I'm guessing that Mike Thaler wrote cool stuff and maybe much like Dan Gutman and, please edit this part out. Jim Pio, pilot. Mike Walker (17:21.937) Jim Pala. Pala. Sorry, sorry Jim. I know Jim sometimes watches the show. So, I mean. David Patrick (17:26.061) I speak French, so I'm going to... No, no, no. Nope. David Patrick (17:34.591) Jim, I'm going to harken back to your French heritage and say, Jim, bye-o. Bye-o. Anyway, so much like the way, you know, Mike Walker (17:39.259) Bye-oh. So actually maybe that can be a thing down below, know, down in the notes of shows that, I don't know, all of a sudden that was an octopus. Another book for another time. David Patrick (17:48.75) Yes. You okay over there? boy. I recommend Decaf. I recommend Decaf. No, but the reason I bring it up is because we found in, I think before we spoke to Dan through our research that despite the fact that Dan and Jim collaborated on these wonderful books for so many years, they have met how many times, Mike? Once. And it was only because Mike Walker (18:12.823) Uno, once. David Patrick (18:16.263) Dan was on a book tour in Arizona, which is where I think Jim lives and they met once. So my point is whenever, ever since then, whenever we look at a book that's written by someone and illustrated by someone else, we go, okay, what was their process like? And we did ask Dan, Dan did say that because of the internet, you know, he would write it out and then send things to Jim and Jim would draw stuff and they go back and forth. So I wonder again, what's the chicken versus the egg thing with this book, because back to what I loved chapter three. Mike Walker (18:19.749) Yep, exactly. Mike Walker (18:28.656) Yeah. David Patrick (18:44.969) He mentions baseball once I'll take my baseball glove. What's at the top? you on that page? Chapter three? Okay. What's at the top? What's at the top? Mike Walker (18:51.491) Yes, I already memorized it. Mike Walker (18:56.521) There at the very top, see, here's my hands. I'm not looking at the screen. It's down under me. But there is a picture of him flying through the air as he's thrown a fastball at 18 miles an hour. David Patrick (18:58.956) the very top. I love it. Got it. David Patrick (19:14.625) How fast is the fast ball? Just love that. Mike Walker (19:21.937) That is funny. David Patrick (19:22.295) So and again, so we'll back to things back to how this book was written again, maybe our good friend Mike, not you, but the other one wrote this and then our other good friend Jared drew that just by seeing baseball. And I hope to maybe talk to these guys one day and maybe that's going to talk to the how do they collaborate. But the other thing that's all that's mentioned, he mentions baseball once baseball glove. Mike Walker (19:51.472) Yep. David Patrick (19:51.5) And then there's that hilarious thing of like, I'm not it. I don't know everything about baseball, but I do know that 18 miles an hour is not a fastball. Mike Walker (19:59.345) But when you're, how old are these kids? Six? Probably six-ish, maybe? I'm trying to look at pictures of them and figure out like, I have six or seven? Not seven, I think six. You think? Okay. Me neither. It doesn't really say. David Patrick (20:02.845) that's a question. Yeah, maybe. David Patrick (20:12.117) Yeah. I was thinking a little older. I'm thinking eight or nine. I don't know. Well, it is. Yeah, it doesn't. You're right. That's a good. If any of you have read this and done intensive research, can you please do comments below or whatever you're listening to or email us at dads on books at gmail.com and tell us. Yeah, we're not doing any, you know, we're not doing any, you know, self shameless self promotion here. However. Mike Walker (20:27.056) Yeah. Mike Walker (20:32.153) and then subscribe to our show. Because that helps us. Mike Walker (20:40.939) Absolutely not. David Patrick (20:42.593) However, do send us please any evidence you have found in this book of what age or grade they are with copious footnotes and sources cited. Thank you. Mike Walker (20:53.795) Absolutely. So one of my new favorite pictures that I just found is this one. As they are fighting. What's happening over here? That's his pillow he's about hit somebody with. And it looks like a snowman. David Patrick (20:59.937) Yeah. I love it. David Patrick (21:11.596) his pillow is... yeah, there's a face in the pillow. I never noticed that. Maybe it's the sh- Mike Walker (21:17.241) Me neither. I just noticed it because I was trying to get to page 53. David Patrick (21:21.441) Maybe it's the pillow of Turin. Are you laughing at me or did you actually get my reference? Like the shroud? Yeah. Is that Jesus's face? I mean, Jesus was a kid at one point. He was bound to have been invited to a sleepover. That's the human side. Our God became man and before he was a man, he was a boy and Jesus's sleepover. I think we're onto something here. Yeah. Mike Walker (21:28.501) I did. I did. That is very funny. That is... Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. Mike Walker (21:45.347) I think so. And then my other, actually laughed out loud at this. Mike Walker (21:56.987) What does it say at the top? David Patrick (21:58.754) famous broken resolutions. Mike Walker (22:01.871) And who was the first one? David Patrick (22:04.333) It's either Dracula or the big guy with the hair. I'll get the daytime job. Mike Walker (22:06.777) The Count Dracula. What does he say? Mike Walker (22:13.965) At first I looked at it and I was like, oh, daytime. Oh my God, that's hilarious. That is so funny. And then I looked at the other picture and went, who's the big guy with not getting a haircut? Is that Fabio? David Patrick (22:18.165) It would kill him. That's awesome. David Patrick (22:27.725) Yeah, I'd be too. I was like, wait, is that Fabio wearing overalls? mean. Mm hmm. Mike Walker (22:33.041) It could be because, you know, he had big hair. And it says something, but I can't see it at the bottom. It's page, well, it's page 53 to me. So probably 52 to you. David Patrick (22:37.857) That is awesome. David Patrick (22:45.517) Let me go check it out here using technology. I like whales. That's funny. Mike Walker (22:55.375) Reminds me of a whale joke. David Patrick (22:56.205) Caterpillar. So Samson, there's a caterpillar looking at a butterfly and it says you'll never get me up in one of those things. Mike Walker (23:06.946) OK. David Patrick (23:07.851) I don't understand that actually. That's what's that got to do with resolutions. Mike Walker (23:11.185) I have no idea. David Patrick (23:13.131) So I have another funny thing that will introduce one of my favorite characters in the book. So, it's actually, okay. The dog is one of my favorite characters in the book. Yeah. And it, well, you may or may not, because what I was going to say is one of my favorite dog moments is he looks at someone and says, are you a prehistoric caveman? Mike Walker (23:14.385) Yeah. Okay. Mike Walker (23:23.407) Yes. my God, that's so funny. And I know what you're going to say. Mike Walker (23:36.517) That was funny. David Patrick (23:37.474) But I forgot it's a cat. But the point is a pet making funny comments. And also, I'm just noticing this now, the voice bubble for the cat is actually it's not the cloud with the dots, which is what animals usually do because you don't really talk. It's a full on I'm talking out loud. I'm talking to you voice bubble. that is awesome. So, this is. Mike Walker (23:43.088) Yes. Mike Walker (23:54.083) Right. Mike Walker (23:58.73) Me Ow. Mike Walker (24:05.293) My, I, as you were saying that I remembered a dog moment that, that also almost made me laugh out loud at drop off. it's, it's not the first pay the first picture, I don't think, but he's outside of the car with the other kids. And there's the dog in the back seat. And he's like, I need to get out. Cause he thinks he's going to the sleepover too. David Patrick (24:28.258) Right? David Patrick (24:35.208) yes, of course. Mike Walker (24:36.849) So I thought that was pretty funny and cute. David Patrick (24:39.061) I love that. I also loved when he was preparing what he's going to bring. That was really funny. Mike Walker (24:42.863) Yes. David Patrick (24:46.765) I'm just gonna leave it at that. I don't want to root it for everyone. But yeah, there are a lot of fun details in this book. Mike Walker (24:48.207) Yep. Now, there are a lot of fun details and although for the plot itself, think it was, it missed some things. I still enjoyed the book. A lot, a lot, a lot, a lot because of the pictures. And I think that maybe that's the point is for somebody who's not really into reading, you've got the pictures and on all of those picture pages, David Patrick (24:58.658) Mm-hmm. Yes, I did too. Mike Walker (25:17.381) there's words that go with the pictures. David Patrick (25:19.531) Yes, and sparking interest, imagination, talking to people, maybe a bunch of boys read this and they talk and they and that's cool. But let's read another one. And then that is a mission we're all on board with. Yep. Mike Walker (25:29.177) Yeah, yep, yep. And then, you know, yeah. David Patrick (25:35.211) I love it. Hey, anything else about the book? we... On Wednesday. sorry. Today's Monday when you're reading this listening. reading. Good Lord. Come on, man. Mike Walker (25:36.209) huh. I think we can move on to Dan joke Monday. Mike Walker (25:51.473) But you know what? You're not looking. David Patrick (25:56.042) It's all good. I'm looking now. I love it. Where'd you get that? Mike Walker (25:59.491) So, I have no idea, but I have had this for years because I know a certain person who used to say this all the time. David Patrick (26:03.629) Mm. David Patrick (26:08.03) it's awesome. David Patrick (26:14.477) you're sub. Mike Walker (26:16.559) Not, not me. David Patrick (26:18.931) Your subtext is saying that I should know. Mike Walker (26:21.785) Yes, you should. Yes, it's all good. It's all good. You said that all the time when we were in LA. It's hilarious. I saw it and I was like, that's my bookmark for this week. David Patrick (26:23.969) Was it me? You're kidding. It's all good. I said that a lot. You are kidding me. David Patrick (26:38.061) So I don't think I say that much anymore because I don't think I do, but I also don't remember. And I certainly wasn't aware that I said it too much in LA. So I could be saying it today. Monica might see that and go, good Lord. Yes. That's what I married. Or she could look at it and go, no, he's replaced that with 18 other things. He says all the time. mean, who knows, but you know I did? Yes. Yes. Mike Walker (26:55.097) Yeah, who knows, but on bookmarks. wait, bookmarks here. you've got those bookmarks. I have these bookmarks that I got from, a friend for the holidays. he designed these bookmarks and they actually have smells. They're each like a different color and they go, the whole idea is that he made them. David Patrick (27:15.789) Uh-huh. Mike Walker (27:25.271) so that when you're reading Frankenstein, each of the bookmarks has a smell that goes along with a different chapter. David Patrick (27:34.881) like frankincense. Mike Walker (27:37.221) Yes, sort of. I don't think that's exactly the same thing, but sure, I'm going to go with you because yes and. David Patrick (27:37.965) I like how freaking sense is. David Patrick (27:43.935) I'm I know one thing about for yes and I know one thing about frankincense. It's not murder. Mike Walker (27:50.929) What's up? Or gold. And that's what we got this week. Thanks, kids. All right. So Dan joke money. Monday, Monday, Monday. well, I actually have two. Good. And this is a nod to last week, which is still next week in real time. So. David Patrick (27:55.007) Yeah, that's all I Yep. Yes. Do you want to go first? Monday, Monday, Monday. Do you want to go first or should I go first? me too. David Patrick (28:22.504) Hahaha Mike Walker (28:24.305) Do you know the best place to chop down a Christmas tree? David Patrick (28:30.625) I don't. Mike Walker (28:31.858) about three inches off the ground. David Patrick (28:34.551) Okay. That is awesome. Mike Walker (28:40.411) Thank you. And what do you have? David Patrick (28:44.127) I have, why did the poor dog chase his own tail? Mike Walker (28:52.993) No clue. David Patrick (28:55.073) He was trying to make ends meet. David Patrick (28:59.871) because he's poor. And if your headphones had not fallen off, you'd have heard me say, because he's poor. Mike Walker (29:04.625) Hang on. I'm almost back. There you go. Mike Walker (29:14.673) Okay, so I think we have to go with the idea that you don't have to explain the jokes. To me... David Patrick (29:24.647) Or if you do, then it was that funny. Mike Walker (29:29.265) But I laughed eventually, didn't I? I lost my headphones. Okay. David Patrick (29:31.981) yes, you did. Did you check the lost and found? Okay. What's your second one? You said you have two. Mike Walker (29:37.943) I do. It is also based on the holiday of Christmas-ish-ness. How much did Santa's sleigh cost? David Patrick (29:53.677) I have no idea. Mike Walker (29:54.841) Nothing. It was on the house. I think I need new headphones. David Patrick (30:00.622) Or no ears Mike come back Mike Mike Mike come back come back. Oh hi Mike Walker (30:04.88) Hi, I'm back. did you get it? David Patrick (30:14.667) No, what happened? yeah, yeah, yeah, I do. My, I love it. I cannot wait to rediscover that joke. So my second one is also about my favorite character in the book. Mike Walker (30:15.013) You had another joke? You'll listen back and get it. Mike Walker (30:28.697) And this time, hang on, hang on. In which book? David Patrick (30:31.147) Yeah, in the book that we're covering in. Mike Walker (30:33.969) Oh, so you have a joke from the book or about the book. OK. David Patrick (30:36.661) No, no, no, no, no, it's inspired by the book from the New Year's sleepover from the Black Lagoon. And it's from my world's greatest dad jokes book. And it is what animal keeps the best time. Mike Walker (30:45.189) Okay. Mike Walker (30:54.286) I don't know. David Patrick (30:55.703) Time's up. A watchdog. Mike Walker (31:01.413) I don't have to worry about losing my headphones on that one. No, no, not at all. Not at all. my gosh. Wow. Yeah. Okay. That gives you four, four, four jokes, dad jokes to vote on. soon as we figure out how to get you to vote on them. Maybe it would do it on, on Facebook. Have a poll. I think they have polls. Yeah. I like polls. David Patrick (31:04.907) That's not a compliment, Anyway, OK. David Patrick (31:21.997) Dude. That's right. have a poll at polls, right? I like it. I like it. Okay. And since you're in Chicago, Mike, your people can vote early and vote often. Mike Walker (31:35.269) Exactly. All right. Holy crap. How did this happen? We're at 31 minutes. We got to cut this off. Okay. David Patrick (31:36.811) Yes. Okay. Well, hey, this marks. David Patrick (31:44.575) Okay, and it's our last episode of the calendar year. All right. Mike Walker (31:46.991) Yay! This has been a great year. I hope everybody has enjoyed this as much as we have. David Patrick (31:53.293) And you know, it's great about this, Mike. That means with our next episode, for the first time ever, we can say we've been podcasting since last year. Because right now I'm telling people I've been podcasting since twenty twenty five and I wait to see how long they go. I did that to a kid today at school. Yeah, there's a kid today at school is like you do a podcast. And I'm assuming the subtext was, dude, you're like, that's really cool. And then when I said, I've been podcasting since last year, I had to sit there and wait for a little bit. Mike Walker (32:07.601) Wait, it's still 25. David Patrick (32:23.467) Well, he got it.
