Harlem Inspired

Abigail DeVille’s artistic practice began in her grandma’s apartment, where she would find discarded items to piece together a narrative, to see what’s beneath the surface and give us an insight as well. Artists look closer, they tell stories, and can offer a deeper understanding of place and history.

What is Harlem Inspired?

The Studio Museum's new building was designed using Harlem's landscape as an inspiration—The soaring interiors of the faith-based places, the stages for music, theater, and dance that are so integral to Harlem’s culture, the bustling life on 125th Street, and the stoops of Harlem’s brownstones, which are such a prominent transitional zone between the public and the private.

Harlem Inspired was produced by Sound Made Public with the Studio Museum in Harlem.
