The Word On The Street

Why do Christians try to love? Who do they try to love? And how? These are all the questions that will be answered in this episode as we dive into God's word and discover what it's all about.

Show Notes

Episodes always come back to love.

You can find more episodes specifically on love here.

This episode is all about God wanting us to be loving.

WHY do we love?

Bible Passage: John 14:15
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Bible Passage: John 13:34
“But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you.”

Bible Passage: 1 John 4:19
“We love because God loved us first.”

Bible Passage: John 13:34-35
“But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.”
Nowhere does it say that we will get to Heaven if we love others. We cannot ‘work’ our way into Heaven.
This whole series is not about being good in order for us to get eternal life. It is about behaving in a way that will please God.

WHO do we love?

Bible Passage: Proverbs 17:17
“A friend loves at all times.”

Bible Passage: Ephesians 5:25
“Husbands, love your wives.”

Bible Passage: Matthew 22:39
“Love your neighbour.”

Bible Passage: John 15:12
“Love one another.”

Bible Passage: Matthew 5:44
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

HOW do we love?

Bible Passage: Matthew 22:39
“You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

What do you think?
When you give someone love, do you find it easier to:

  1. Give them a hug
  2. Write a nice note

  1. Do a job for them
  2. Give them a present

  1. spend time with someone doing something special
  2. Help them with a chore

How do we show love to God? By loving everyone.

How do we love others? As you love yourself.

How do you love yourself?

Story Time!

At my church we all eat dinner together every week.
This is a huge process.
One team cooks for 200 people.
One team washes up for 200 people.
10 teams. Every term. 4 times a year.
I love not having to cook dinner every Saturday night.
I love being able to eat dinner with everyone from church.
I chat with old friends and I meet new ones. I sit with people who are visiting.
If we are all focused on giving love, then we will all end up getting love as well.
I am not part of those teams.
Instead I do different things to love my church.

Question Time!
  1. Who in your life is easy to love? What do you do to love them?
  2. Who is the most difficult person for you to love? Why?
  3. Think of someone you know and do something loving for them this week. If you can’t think of anything, try and choose something from the list below:
  • Write a list of everyone you know, stick the list next to your bed and pray for them every night before you go to bed
  • Choose someone who loves you a lot from church, school or anywhere, and send them a card telling them why you think they are so great
  • Think of someone who is especially needing some love at the moment and make them a video - a performance - song or a dance - or even just a kind message, and send it to them.
  • Buy or better yet make a present for someone whom you know and deliver it as a surprise!
  • Google “random act of kindness” to find more ideas and do one of those. You will absolutely make someone’s day!
