Manny "The Teacher" Sobral, the former Canadian and IBO Champion of the World, joins host Coach J on this week's episode of the Empire Boxing Podcast. Sobral grew up in East Van after his parents emigrated from Spain to Canada when he was six years old. He started boxing when he was 13 years old after walking into the Inner City Gym near Main and Hastings. He went on to fight out of the legendary Astoria Gym on East Hastings under the tutelage of George Angelomatis where he compiled an impressive amateur record of 135 wins and 11 losses earning three national championships, five international golds and a trip to the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea where he represented Canada. After posting a 28-1 pro record over the course of six years and reaching 6th in the WBC ranking, Manny retired ranked 15th. He has worked in almost every aspect of the boxing business including as a coach, promoter and cutman. So tune in and enjoy another episode full of lessons and boxing history.
