चन्द्रक्षयः

भगवान् चन्द्रः अतीव मनोहरः इति कारणेन दक्षप्रजापतिः स्वस्य सप्तविंशतिं पुत्रीः चन्द्रेण सह परिणायितवान् । पत्नीषु अन्यतमायां रोहिण्यां चन्द्रस्य गाढा प्रीतिः अस्ति इति कारणतः अन्याः स्वपितुः समीपं गत्वा चन्द्रः अस्मान् उपेक्षते इति अवदन् । पुत्रीणां विषये चन्द्रेण क्रियमाणम् अन्यायपूर्वकं व्यवहारं दृष्ट्वा 'भवान् क्षयरोगग्रस्तः सन् क्षीयताम्' इति शप्तवान् कुपितः दक्षः । क्षयरोगेण पीड्यमानं पतिं दृष्ट्वा सर्वाः पत्न्यः पितरं प्रार्थयन् यत् चन्द्रं यथापूर्वं स्वस्थं करोतु इति । 'चन्द्रः भवतीनाम् आशयानुसारं मासे एकस्मिन् पक्षे शोभेत अन्यस्मिन् पक्षे क्षीयेत' इति । तदारभ्यः चन्द्रः एकस्मिन् पक्षे शोभते अन्यस्मिन् पक्षे क्षीयते । शुक्लपक्षः कृष्णपक्षः इति तौ द्वौ पक्षौ प्रसिद्धौ ।

Daksha Prajapati married his 27 daughters to Chandra (the Moon). Chandra loved Rohini most, which angered the other wives. Complaining to Daksha, they said Chandra neglected them. Enraged, Daksha cursed Chandra to gradually diminish. The wives pleaded for mercy, so Daksha modified the curse: “Chandra shall shine brightly during one half of the month and wane during the other half”. Thus arose the two lunar phases—Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight).
