#beyondFLG

Join Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle as they go #beyondFLG with Adrian Herder, who is the marketing and media manager for the non-profit organization Tó Nizhóní Ání which is the Navajo language for Sacred Water Speaks. Adrian is from the Black Mesa region of the Navajo Nation and currently resides in Flagstaff, AZ. He served as a volunteer with TNA for seven years before officially joining the team in 2020. Adrian has a background as an accomplished potter and artist, showing his work in several notable shows and art markets. In addition, he has designed many flyers, posters, and logos for businesses and organizations. Outside of TNA, Adrian has enjoyed running, taking photos of Diné life, and he admits to a consideration of mountain biking.

In this interview, we cover Adrian’s work with TNA and the important work that TNA is doing through education while simultaneously holding Peabody Coal accountable for the harm they’ve caused to Navajo land and people. We also discuss his connection to his home in Hardrock and Flagstaff and get into the topic of how he fell into the position of race director for the event Rezduro which was featured in the film “The Trails Before Us” and premiered at the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival this past Spring.

Thank you so much for joining us as we go #beyondFLG with Adrian Herder.

What is #beyondFLG?

Flagstaff is a remarkable place full or remarkable people. Some may even say that Flagstaff is the best place on Earth and some may say that such a statement is hyperbolic. Either way, there is no other place exactly like it, and that includes the people that contribute to it. Flagstaff is full of people with diverse backgrounds that possess a wide range of interests, skills, and stories. This variety of interests, skills, and stories contributes to the textured and unique feel of the area.

#BeyondFLG is a podcast aimed at highlighting the natural beauty of this region and the peoples that contribute to it. Some may describe this podcast as award winning based on the badges given to it through the podcast platform while others may say that the show is underproduced and overstated. #beyondFLG is hosted by two local psychologists and founders of Beyond the Pines, A Flagstaff Wellness Collective; Cody Bayles and Dan Phillips. Their values lie in promoting connection to self, others, and the natural world and their efforts occasionally hit somewhere near that mark, let’s say adjacent to it. Join them as they go #beyondFLG with members of the Flagstaff community and explore the overall connection to the area, their craft, and others.
