Every Christian picks up assumptions about missions somewhere along the way. Some of them are mostly right. Some of them quietly convince us that missions is somebody else’s job.
This episode kicks off a new series on the myths we tend to believe about missions, and it’s the first time Jared and Leanne have recorded together in the same room. They start with the big one: missions is for missionaries. Where does that idea come from, what does Paul’s letter to the Philippians say about it, and what does it look like to be part of God’s mission if you’re never going to move overseas?
What we talked about
- Where the line between “missionaries” and everyone else comes from
- Why church leaders are meant to equip the saints, not do all the ministry for them
- Paul’s thank-you to the Philippians, and fruit credited to their account
- Roles vs. responsibility: why every believer has a part in God’s mission
- Ways to be involved without moving overseas: pray, give, go, welcome, connect
- International students, and the mission field that shows up in college towns every semester
- Why the U.S. is a mission field too
- What to do when you’ve been faithful for years and haven’t seen any fruit
