The Syllabus

“At one point [President Salovey] copped to being a Zionist”—that’s according to Evan Morris, a Yale professor, telling Syllabus podcast host Mark Oppenheimer about his meeting with Yale president Peter Salovey to demand that the university come out more forcefully against Hamas. But what does it matter if the Yale president is a Zionist? For that matter, who cares what university presidents think about politics? Apparently, the answer is: everyone. In the past few weeks, administrators have been called on as never before to come out with forceful political statements. In episode 3 of The Syllabus, Oppenheimer presses Morris, an outspoken faculty activist, on why it matters what university presidents think. In this candid conversation, they talk about DEI, antisemitism, Jews, double standards, and much more. Guest Gio: Evan D. Morris teaches biomedical imaging at Yale. Before coming to Yale, he taught professional ethics at Purdue and Indiana. In 2021, Morris founded the Yale Forum for Jewish Faculty and Friends to fight antisemitism on campus. What is The Syllabus?

Every week, a different guest joins Mark Oppenheimer to talk about politics on American college campuses. Politics are roiling college campuses across the United States. Whether the topic is the Middle East, affirmative action, Title IX, or something else, students and faculty seem to have controversial opinions—and they aren't being very civil in talking about them. To cut through the noise, and to find out what teachers and students really think, journalist, historian, sometime professor, and college administrator Mark Oppenheimer is joined by teachers, students, and administrators to give their uncensored view from the ground (or the quadrangle, or the fraternity or sorority house, or the dining hall, or the dorm, or the playing field). The Syllabus is produced by the Office of Open Learning at American Jewish University in partnership with Inside Higher Ed.
