Daily Psalms - Classical Psalms Every Day

Psalm 25: Teach Me Thy Paths

David by now has done almost everything a man of God can do. He has slain giants, written songs the whole nation is still singing, worn a crown, led armies, danced before the ark. And yet listen to the verb that repeats through this psalm like a heartbeat: teach. "Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me." The great king becomes, quite deliberately, a schoolboy again. Here is something Lewis noticed and loved — that the closer a soul comes to God, the more of a beginner it feels. The saints do not graduate. They enroll more deeply. And buried inside this schoolboy's prayer is one of the most tender requests in the Bible: "Remember not the sins of my youth." Not: "excuse them," not: "explain them away." Just: let them be forgotten by the only Person in the universe whose forgetting is a kind of grace. Consider how much of your past you would entrust to such a memory.
