Welcome to Speak The Truth, a podcast devoted to giving biblical truth for educating, equipping, and encouraging the individual and local church in counseling and discipleship. Hello. Hello. Hello.
Emily:Yo. Yo.
Mike:Hey. Emily is saying, yo, yo, yo. How about that, Shauna?
Emily:Shauna loves it when I steal that
Mike:from her. Yes. I love it when you steal it from her. At any rate, as you guys can hear, we have Emily on the podcast and we wanted to take this time to introduce. We're gonna release some episodes here.
Mike:Just bonus episodes really just to give us some more information about the tracks. And so Emily is gonna be a track leader for the Fundamentals of Biblical Counseling Methods. And so we wanted to bring her on to talk a little bit more about the Fundamentals track, what to look forward to, who's speaking, and anything else that she wants to persuade you to come and check it out. So, Emily
Emily:Hi, Mike. How
Mike:are I'm doing good. I am doing good. Glad you're on. Last time you were on, we were in Toronto area. Let's see if I can get it right.
Mike:Canadian Biblical Counseling Coalition, because I would always put the Canadian at the end of it or Canada. I always checked That's it
Emily:so fun.
Mike:Yeah. And you stole Shana's Yo Yo Yo Yo. Yeah. Yeah. Now I get to do that.
Mike:Yes. Yes, indeed. Sweet. Emily, will you just introduce the track? But before I do that, just your role at ABC, a little bit about Oregon people, maybe?
Mike:Yes. We're in Oregon
Emily:doing this podcast.
Mike:Yes. At the Made to Minister Conference. So
Emily:we don't get to be in person very much, but my role at ABC, I'm director of certification training, which is a new role for me with the new team that's been rolled out the last couple months. And so excited to be able to help with training all over the country in our online program and really all across the world as we're building training centers all over the place.
Mike:Yes. Which makes this particular track very needed.
Emily:Very needed. Yeah. I would say this fundamentals track, especially for our online students. So if you're in a training center, you get a lot of biblical counseling methods, fundamentals woven into your training. But our online students are out there independently self paced going through the program and maybe don't get some of the practical side of biblical counseling woven in there.
Emily:This is gonna be a great track for that.
Mike:Yeah, especially to Emily's point, for those of you listening who maybe are in the middle of level one or just completed level one, like this is a good next step to just in terms of a methodology of things that are gonna be helpful as you continue to develop yourself as a counselor. With that, Emily, could you just kind of run through the sessions, who the speaker is, and just maybe a quick brief thought on each of those sessions and maybe how they build off each other?
Emily:Yeah, we're starting with just what is a good theology of care in the church. And then we're gonna go from beginning sessions well, ending sessions, and then everything in between. And so this will be, if you're new to counseling, like Mike said, if you're in level one, if you're just exploring, like what even is biblical counseling, maybe you're even in professional counseling and want to see like, what kind of is a different methodology that we would practice in biblical counseling. What's similar to what you're already doing. I know we've had those folks join the track too, in the past.
Emily:If you've come before, we're going to be offering some different workshops this year, because we like to change it up. We have a couple of new speakers with different passions. We'll be exploring some new topics this year. We'll start with the theology of care and we're gonna have Dan Graham going to be on the track. Oh, by the way, we're using people in these tracks that are training leaders.
Emily:And so they teach this kind of thing all the time in their classes. And so these are people experienced in training and teaching new counselors. And so Dan is one of those people. He teaches Biblical Counseling at Emmaus Seminary. Okay.
Emily:And he also is a pastor and has a counseling ministry. So he's used to teaching new counselors. We'll start with Starting Well. Just how do we navigate initial sessions wisely? How do we start with somebody?
Emily:How do we start to unpack their story and hear why they're needing counseling?
Mike:Yeah, and you're the speaker on that.
Emily:And then I'm the speaker on that. That's the hard part of just, you're maybe with a brand new person, you know how to break the ice with them. So when we're talking about that. And then Dan is gonna follow-up again with just the story of the Bible and counseling from Garden to Glory. So really that theme of Scripture tells a giant story.
Emily:As we're living out our story in our lives, like there are themes in our stories that are gonna tie into the bigger story of God. And so we're gonna unpack how to use God's story from garden to glory, to be able to come alongside someone else in their particular story.
Mike:Yeah, that's a really important fundamental right there for sure.
Emily:And then we're gonna really then talk about the details of really how to unpack a person's story in counseling and doing that story work so that we can find out what really is going on in their life. What are some of their themes in their life? Help the person to be able to unpack their story. And my dear friend, Chris Minot is gonna be doing that. She's a training leader in Fort Myers, Florida at Summit Church, and she's been training and teaching counselors for a long time.
Emily:And so has a ton of energy and you'll be really glad to hear
Mike:from her.
Emily:Cause you wouldn't want boring people on a fundamentals track, right? To So bring some energy to the room. Chris then will be doing a dynamics of the heart. Just how do we get to the bottom of really what's going on in their heart and how do we counsel to the heart rather than just counseling behavior modification? How do we counsel that heart transformation?
Emily:And then we get our own beloved Shauna, YoYoYo. She is gonna be doing two sessions on just the character of God and counseling, which is just, that's a theme that we all need to counsel to, so that we can teach people to put their hope in what there is to hope in rather than the things of this world. And so Shauna will be doing that Along with sharing scripture and counseling, which is our most important fundamental is how do you then apply God's word directly to the circumstances in someone's life. And so we always love hearing from her and her wisdom and those lessons. Then I'm gonna wrap it up with ending well.
Emily:Like how do you end with somebody? Do you just counsel them forever until they're completely sanctified and they go home? Or is there a way to end counseling and get them into community and put people around them that are gonna continue to walk things out with them? We'll have a panel too at the end where we'll apply all of these fundamental methods to a case. And so you can see how we'll go back and see how it works with And this case we did that last year, it was really fun.
Emily:We'll do a new case this year. And like I said, there's about four new lessons in this track. So if you went last year, but still keep wanting to grow in your fundamentals, there's some new things for you.
Mike:Yeah. That's a good point for those of you who have been maybe counseling for a little while but need to revisit the fundamentals would be good. Because really, Emily, as you were sharing these things, the reality is like all of these speakers, the dynamics, the topics, moving through the process of counseling and methodology. So it's gonna be very informative. It's gonna be relational.
Mike:It's gonna be interactive. So this is definitely a good lineup, and you definitely don't wanna miss out Yeah. On this one. Emily, thank you for taking just a few minutes to introduce the track, give us some details on the track and who's gonna be speaking in the content of the track. We appreciate that.
Mike:And, guys, again, you can go and register right now for the Called Counsel Conference. All the details will be in the show notes. And we look forward to seeing you guys, and please come up and introduce yourself. We are very much a family at the ABC conference, and we wanna get to know you. And as Emily said in her role, getting to know just different people within training centers and just the people that they have within the training centers.
Mike:So Emily does very good at her job and she engages with a lot of people. And so we hope you guys will be blessed through this track. Thank you guys for listening, and we can't wait to see you guys at the Called Counsel Conference.
