It is 20 hours past midnight on another clear and cold one here in Gwangju, and we have another outstanding program lined up for you tonight here on The Drop. And this Friday’s programming is world premiered not once, not twice, but thrice as January 14, 2022. This is Danno, very excited to highlight some local talent on the gig tonight, coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do?
Tonight we have Sanchez t/n Oisin Magee joining us in the studio to select some choice cuts for hour 2, but the main event is the expat Gwangju-based Irish artist is out with his debut album on February 16 called Burgundy, and we’ll be doing an exclusive world premiere of three songs during the course of the two hours, with two to lead off part 2, then another to start the final quarter of the show tonight. Produced mainly by Dan Lloyd, Burgundy is a quality album start to finish that was contributed to by so many of our musicians here in Gwangju, so we’ll be highlighting some work from Andrew Vlasblom, who also produced one of the tracks on the LP, along with Lizz Kalo & Kamen Ross for the main portion of part 2 this evening. Big up, Gwangju. So, let’s get started by going to jail, as it was yesterday that Johnny Cash recorded his iconic Live at Folsom Prison LP, and we’ll talk about all there is to know about after he sings the blues behind bars. THIS is The Drop.
________
Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues (Live)
The Drop has commenced proceedings for guests & requests Friday night world premiere. Glad to have you with us as always, Danno here doing my thing as I do each & every night on GFN between 8 and 10, and we are doing a big showcase of the local talent on the music scene here in Gwangju, and the people involved with sanchez’s new album Burgundy, which drops Feb 16. Big up to everyone involved on this one, including producers Dan Lloyd and Andrew Vlasblom along with Jon Amey, Lizz Kalo, Kamen Ross and a whole village of others we do not have time to list off here. We’ll be rocking a world premiere of two tracks from the album to start part 2 this evening, and we’ll get another one to start part 4 that is out next week called Bethlehem as well.
However, as usual, we are getting ahead of ourselves with the excitement to come, so let’s recap what we began the gig with tonight for our TIGHT (or) feature. That was Johnny Cash live from Folsom Prison and the opening tune called Folsom Prison Blues. Cash wrapped recording on this album yesterday in 1968, playing live to the inmates at California’s chief state penitentiary.
The success of this album put Cash back on the map, as his career had been flailing in the years leading up to this recording. And although Johnny Cash had been playing prisons for the entertainment of the inmates all around the country starting in 1957, this one was put onto a live record as Cash brought a mobile recording device.
Bob Johnston, coming off Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album, is the producer. He tells Cash to "Just go out and say who you are," so he starts the show with his soon-to-be-iconic saying, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." And that’s how history is made, folks.
Johnny Cash, a true man of the people, rest in power.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s move forward in the vein of the opening tune and what sanchez has for us in hour two tonight when he takes over the playlist. Up next we have a little something from the aforementioned Blonde On Blonde then tunes from The Pogues and The Killers, all of which we’ll talk a bit about after the waves crash ashore. THIS is The Drop on your Burgundy world premiere Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop for the final yaddas of the first quarter, what’s the craic, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? This is Danno, ready with a very special presentation for tonight, as sanchez joins us in hour 2. The Irish singer-songwriter and Gwangju fixture of ire is out with his debut album as of February 16, and we have a tune that’s already out along with three others from the album to premiere tonight, along with a highlight of some of the talented people that contributed to the LP in part 2. So, we just continued rolling out the red carpet and highlighting some artists coming up in hour 2 on The Sanchise’s playlist, that was…
Bob Dylan – Pledging My Time (…showcasing a bit more of producer Bob Johnston’s work right there, the producer for Johnny Cash’s live at Folsom Prison was also the producer on this LP, Blonde On Blonde, a gem released in 1966.)
The Pogues – Dirty Old Town (…a favorite of Irishmen the world over, most notably our guest artist tonight and his wrestling partner John Howard. A tune released on Rum Sodomy & The Lash from 1985, we had to get our Irish up just a bit tonight before Sanchez kicks down the door.)
The Killers – Quiet Town (…a definite change of pace for the veteran band on their last album Pressure Machine from last year. A definitely more acoustic and folk approach to be found on this album if you wanna hear more, and we will hear more early Killers stuff on sanchez’s playlist tonight later on.)
Alright, so as we approach the end of part 1 tonight, we have the only cut for time refugee from Sanchez’s 2nd hour playlist. Up next is Kasabian with You’re In Love with A Psycho, to which my only response can be guilty as charged in regard to my man Sanchez. After that another band we’ll hear more from in hour 2 and The Police and our final cut is King of Pain to finish off the first fourth tonight. THIS is The Drop on your dirty sanchez Friday night.
Kasabian – You’re In Love With A Psycho
The Police – King of Pain

The Drop is back for tonight as we have commenced the Gwangju-centric world premiere 2nd stanza of our radiological orchestra on this very fine Friday night. Danno here making sure everything is set for our guest artist selector in hour 2 this evening in sanchez. True name Oisin Magee is out with his debut album Burgundy Feb 16, and that was a world premiere of two cuts off the album which we’ll talk up further right now...
Sanchez. – Sadness (Never Felt So Good) ( …a stellar and sorrowful cut off the 11 song debut LP from Sanchez, the only song produced by Andrew Vlasblom. Beautiful duet right there featuring a female vocalist I obviously need to get familiar with in Emily Tarry Wright, who’s also working with Andrew Vlasblom on some other songs for his label Kindle Records based right here in Gwangju.)
Sanchez. – Little Bird ( …a little switch-up right here, a brilliant choral arrangement with some surprising horns thrown in. File this one under just one of many stylistic surprises on Burgundy, which veers all over from ballads to hard rock and indie folk. Make sure to get that & give it a few spins on February 16 when Burgundy releases in full, and also check out our spotlight in next week’s Korea Times as well.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & stream, download, and/or subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, we’re going to put a spotlight on three of the artists who contributed to this album who are based right here in Gwangju. Up next is the aforementioned Andrew Vlasblom to be followed by our Round Trip darling in Lizz Kalo and the talented and amazing Kamen Ross will finish up. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with sanchez and the whole village of Juville.

The Drop continues as we head towards the jump to parts 3 & 4 tonight. Danno here, showing love for our community tonight in that last block, and for those just getting with the program sanchez t/n Oisin Magee will join us to take over the playlist in hour 2 with some of his favorites and influences, which starts shortly. Sanchez is out with his debut LP Burgundy Feb 16, and we premiered two tunes to start part 2 then just showed some love for people involved with the LP, so let’s run down the affection...
Andrew Vlasblom – Windmills of Iowa (…this one appeared on the artist’s late 2020 LP Hitchhiking For Love, which most law enforcement officials would say is not recommended, but Andrew did it in North America back in the day. He is the man over at Kindle Records, Gwangju’s independent label, do subscribe where you can find them.)
Lizz Kalo – Shoot Me (…another album that came out in late 2020 on November 6 was Y.O.U. or YOU by our esteemed travel guide on Wednesday nights. Lizz also contributed vocals to one of the tunes on sanchez’s Burgundy, which once again drops Feb 16.)
Kamen Ross – Wildest Dreams (…the brilliant multi-instrumentalist formerly of Gwangju now back in the US is all over the upcoming album by Sanchez. This is a little cover of Taylor Swift that he put out right before departing Korea a couple of months ago, and his solo debut album I Dreamt We Fell In Love came out last year as well, which is the artist showing his death-defying skills on the piano.)
So, let’s finish sentimental tonight and like the Killers play something more recent from another artist we’ll hear more from in hour 2 on sanchez’s playlist. Up next is The Strokes off their brilliant 2020 LP The New Abnormal, and this is a bit of a long one called At The Door, and that is gonna be it for the first half tonight. THIS is The Drop with sanchez on your Burgundy Friday night.
