Dusty goes solo to explain why he shelved a finished leadership manuscript and started over with Ancient Intelligence, a book built around a realization he had spent more than a year resisting: leaders do not need to become technologists to succeed with AI—they need to become better leaders in an environment where work is being done differently. Sparked by a blunt conversation with his friend Alex, who challenged him to stop giving the topic the “Heisman” and recognize the value already emerging from his work with AI, Dusty argues that the business bookshelf is crowded with books answering “How do I use this?” while leaders are wrestling with much deeper questions about where AI belongs, how to lead it, and how to keep teams focused on outcomes rather than activity. He explains that AI has made competent work dramatically easier to produce, shifting the real value from the first 80% of an output into the final 20%—the judgment, discernment, context, wisdom, and expertise that experienced leaders have spent decades developing. That shift makes human leadership more valuable, not less. Dusty’s central insight is that leading AI requires the same capabilities as leading people: set expectations, provide context, define what great looks like, measure results, review the work, and coach toward improvement. Through a practical exercise of reviewing AI output as though it came from a team member, he challenges leaders to identify and codify the judgment they uniquely contribute. The result is an encouraging reframing of the AI era: good work may have become cheap, but hard-earned human wisdom has become increasingly scarce—and therefore increasingly valuable.
