In today’s homily, Fr. Chris Alar explains the incredible authority Jesus entrusted to His Church: the power to forgive sins. When we go to Confession, Christ Himself forgives us through the priest. Jesus gave His Apostles the “keys of the Kingdom of Heaven,” giving the Church real authority to bind and loose on earth and in heaven. This authority continues through the priesthood and the Sacraments.
Fr. Chris reminds us that Jesus established a visible Church with Peter as the rock and apostolic succession continuing after the Apostles. The Pope does not replace Christ; Christ remains the Head of the Church, while the Pope and priests serve with authority delegated by Him. Though the Church is made up of imperfect human beings, her mission and authority are divine. That is why we can trust the Sacraments, return to Confession, and know Christ is still working through His Church today.
