So what God had established for the people was that there was a 00:06:31.108 --> 00:06:34.958 person who represented the people to God. 00:06:35.124 --> 00:06:37.018 And so in the holy of holies, 00:06:37.018 --> 00:06:38.998 in the construction of the temple, 00:06:39.018 --> 00:06:43.246 there was that courtyard that all the Gentiles and everybody could enter. 00:06:43.268 --> 00:06:47.176 And then there was a more private courtyard for just the people of God, 00:06:47.176 --> 00:06:47.912 the jewish people, 00:06:47.912 --> 00:06:48.808 the hebrew people. 00:06:48.632 --> 00:06:53.314 And then there was the inner place behind the veil that was. 00:06:53.512 --> 00:06:57.110 No one went in there except the high priest. 00:06:58.010 --> 00:06:58.754 High priest, 00:06:58.802 --> 00:06:59.756 once a year, 00:06:59.756 --> 00:07:00.642 day of atonement, 00:07:00.642 --> 00:07:01.298 Yom Kippur. 00:07:01.298 --> 00:07:04.268 It falls way like October or November this year, 00:07:04.490 --> 00:07:06.470 but the whole day of atonement. 00:07:07.470 --> 00:07:09.984 So this idea of the priesthood of Christ, 00:07:09.984 --> 00:07:11.494 the priesthood of Jesus, 00:07:11.622 --> 00:07:13.980 they had for hundreds of years, 00:07:16.190 --> 00:07:19.850 they had a high priest who was appointed, 00:07:20.430 --> 00:07:23.070 right, to serve on behalf of the people, 00:07:23.088 --> 00:07:24.426 to present the offerings. 00:07:24.538 --> 00:07:27.988 And the text really gives us quite an adequate picture of it. 00:07:27.988 --> 00:07:30.522 He says he offered both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 00:07:30.522 --> 00:07:33.112 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going 00:07:33.112 --> 00:07:35.694 astray, since he also is clothed with weakness. 00:07:35.694 --> 00:07:39.984 So this was a human high priest who on the day of atoma, 00:07:39.998 --> 00:07:45.086 he would have to first offer sacrifices and sprinkle the blood for his 00:07:45.128 --> 00:07:46.310 own sin, 00:07:46.810 --> 00:07:51.100 right? Because if he entered the holy of holies with his own sin, 00:07:51.106 --> 00:07:56.056 then he'd get struck down and they'd have to pull him out by a rope. 00:07:56.410 --> 00:08:00.448 But so he would offer sacrifices for his own sin before offering the 00:08:00.448 --> 00:08:02.860 sacrifices for all the people. 00:08:03.630 --> 00:08:06.600 So that was the role of the high priest. 00:08:06.750 --> 00:08:10.922 And what this text is telling us is that he could be compassionate, 00:08:10.922 --> 00:08:14.394 he could show God's mercy and compassion, 00:08:14.442 --> 00:08:15.802 because as high priest, 00:08:15.866 --> 00:08:19.630 he knew the frailties of his own flesh, 00:08:20.370 --> 00:08:22.874 right?
