अपूर्वा वरदक्षिणा

मदनमोहनमालवीयः यदा विश्वविद्यालयनिर्माणाय धनसङ्ग्रहणकार्ये निरतः आसीत् तदा कश्चन धनिकः स्वपुत्र्याः विवाहनिमन्त्रणपत्रं तस्मै दत्तवान् । मालवीयस्य शिष्यः एव तस्य कन्यायाः वरः आसीत् । सः धनिकः विवाहं वैभवपूर्णं कर्तुम् इच्छति स्म । मालवीयः तम् आडम्बरव्ययस्य व्यर्थत्वं सूचितवान्, एवं कृत्वा तदर्थं यत् धनं व्ययीक्रियेत तत् विश्वविद्यालयाय दानरूपेण समर्प्यताम् इति तेन निर्दिष्टम् । धनिकः तस्य अभिप्रायं स्वीकृतवान् । वरस्य पक्षे अपि अङ्गीकारः प्राप्तः । अवशिष्टं धनं विश्वविद्यालयाय अर्पितम्, येन विश्वविद्यालये अनेकानि भवनानि निर्मितानि । जनाः एतां दानशीलतां प्रशंसन्तः उक्तवन्तः - "एषः एव वरदक्षिणायाः योग्यः अर्थः" इति ।

When Madan Mohan Malaviya was busy raising funds for the construction of a university, a rich man gave him a marriage certificate for his daughter. Malaviya's disciple was the groom of his daughter. The rich man wanted to marry a rich woman. Malaviya informed him of the futility of the extravagance, and he was instructed to donate whatever money could be spent on it to the university. Initially, he was hesitant, but eventually, the rich man accepted his opinion. The groom's side also received a pledge. Marriage is easy. The rest of the money was donated to the university, which constructed several buildings. People praised this generosity and said, "This is the meaning of the dowry."
